4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Mess .......2007-05-10

I don't like to give albums 5 stars unless they truly are a fave of mine. CiS comes close, but not quite. I wouldv'e given 4 1/2 if it was an option.

So this album is a mess. A brilliant mess of untuned guitars, stunning yet detached bass playing, and dissonant drumming (strange for a noise album). In My opinon this is Kims best album. Her vocals, while abrasive and completly out of tune (how i like it) are intense and grab u by the ears and won't let go untill the end of the song (in some cases longer). Also her Bass playing is pronounced more than usual, especially in her creepy droner Protect Me You. Her tracks are my fave ones on the album (Shaking hell, live Stooges cover I Wanna be Your Dog, and Protect Me You). In fact, I have never heard anything like PMY.

Thurston and Lee are crazy good. If you think the noise songs on Sister and EVOL are too much, hear this. They are not tuneless, they are positively Horrifying. Im scared to turn my volume up to loud, (as much as I want to), as I fear for the safty of my speakers (and my ears). They seem to try as hard as possiby to make the riffs sound bad, and as Bad as they are, it still sound euphoriuc. Although in my opinion their more structured than Evol and BMR, just in a different way. I prefer this to their later noise rock of plain guitar screeches. Here its just scary. Nightmarish as other reviewers say.

The drumming, is not Steve Shelley. I love him to death, but i think for the sake of this album it is a good thing. There doesn't seem to be much of a rhythem, probably because you can barely hear the drumming in parts, even though thy're not exactly quite. I wouldn't be suprised if the drummer (names escaped me) didn't even use a drum kit half the time. He might well have been smashing a bamboo stick on a dinner table. Theres absolutly NO structure to his drumming. And its perfect.

The added KYI EP is excellent. Dont buy the album without it. Shaking Hell live is awesome, and of course Kill Your Idols...

Buy it, but beware, it'll freak the hell out of you, and may find yourself regretting the purchase. Actually don't buy it if u found albums like Daydream Nation hard to get through, cos you won't have a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Good times with the Youth..........2007-03-22

I don't know why everyone keeps saying this album is simply "artistic" chaotic noise. Sure it's loud, and often harsh, but it's also very dance-worthy. Songs like 'Nature Scene' and 'Inhuman' have a pretty solid rhythm flowing throughout. Buy this one to play loud in the car or on Halloween!

This reviewer's favorite songs: 'Making the Nature Scene', 'The World Looks Red' and 'Early American'.

(Brother James is better live!)

5 out of 5 stars Got no idols..........2006-11-21

At first I was reluctant to buy this CD because everyone claims its such a huge dpeature from their other work. This is what started it all. This album is not such a huge stretch from alot of Sonic Youth's work, yeah it's a bit more tense, but there's alot of the same qualities that make this a must own of an SY or indie rock fan. 'Daydream Nation' is a much louder album. It's not pop but believe me if you like their other albums you will like this. Everyone acts like 'Goo' and 'Dirty' were so mainstream, they are good records but this is better by far.

Anyways buy this and Bad Moon Rising, two albums that perfectly accompany one another.

5 out of 5 stars No Wave Masterpiece... All Hail The Old School.......2006-10-04

Basically this album gave birth to the Art-Noise scene in NYC. Frankly, if you do not like this album you are ignorant. You do not get art or music-as-art.

4 out of 5 stars This isn't music; this is art........2006-06-19

I could see how lots of people would mistake this as a low-quality pre-grunge noise-fest which rarely contains any hints of typical song-structure and melodies, but that's because they think this is supposed to be a typical rock record. It is anything but.

I regretably admit to being one of the many who literally shook when first hearing this album. I couldn't even fathom how I had just spent money on it. Then, I decided to read the accompanied essay in the booklet and I began to get a stronger feel for the album and the points they were trying to make (whether sucessfully or unsucessfully, that's up to YOU to decide). So I listened to it again (with the volume considerably lower then before) and I eventually, over time (five or six listens), gave in to their sonic chaos and their disturbing "soundscapes" which are melancholy to the point of cliche-defying power and dark beauty.

One word of advice for any newcomers; this is literally the last Sonic Youth album you should buy. It's not necesarily their worst, but I can count five or six which are far superiour to this, and after listening to them extensively you will get a better feel for this glorious piece of art.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Weigle lets it all hang out.......2005-07-14

If you are familiar with Mark Weigle's previous CD's, then this two sided effort is going to be a comfort and a shock. When I say two sided, I don't mean in the old traditional side one and side two definition of vinyl albums. I mean in the split personalities of "Soulsex" individual CD's. The discs are each given a sub-title of "Wrestling The Angel" and "Versatile." A more appropriate moniker might have been "ego" and "id," respectively.

The "Wrestling The Angel" half is the Mark Weigle his fans will be most likely to identify first. It's filled with the thoughtful, insightful and folkish songs that Mark has graced us with over the course of his CD's. There is even a wonderful nod to his love of country music, in the begging to be covered "And I Love Horses." You will also find such out-conscious songs as "The Blessing" and "Little Boy," and the stellar "Why Not Fly." These songs speak more to me than any screeching diva or club mix ever will.

There are also a growing number of social issue songs here. "Lazy Mexican" attacks prejudice and "White Scarves On Tuesday" belongs next to Sting's "They Dance Alone," both in topic and musical excellence. But you'll also see a very pointed and angry song that looks into an unpleasant gay culture's mirror with "Tires and Gasoline," the story of Billy Jack Gaither, a man who was brutally murdered by gay bashers in Alabama around the same time Matthew Sheppard was killed in Laramie. Problem was, 39 year old middle aged men aren't quite as saintly as 22 year olds, and Gaither's murder was - when reported at all - usually a sidebar to the canonization of Sheppard. It's one of the many highlights on "Wrestling The Angel."

In fact, if that was the only disc we were talking about here, I'd probably be ready to gush about just how much Mark's music keeps improving, and how much I think his CD's are among the best you'll find. But then, you have that id disc roaring out from under that mild mannered persona. On the first song, a lead guitar snarls a gnarly lead and the first words you hear are "Hey there Mr. Trucker Man, I heard your zipper falling."

Buckle your seat belts, fellas. It's going to be a stormy ride. Focus on The Family is going to mess themselves.

"Versatile" is something that I've never heard before. Instead of high lonesome sensitive man to man paeans to love and eternal devotion, Mark tears the cover off with primal lunges into truck stops, parks after dark and leather bars. And these ain't pretty boys in OUT magazine fashion model adverts. These are mans' songs, odes to blue collar guys with a "Joe Gage face and a Brush Creek belly." (In fact, several of these songs are used as the soundtrack to the Joe Gage produced "110 Degrees In Tucson.") Just like the adult DVD soundtack the songs represent, there's a lot of celebration of the carnal on "Versatile." So if you're spooked by four letter words, slang description of male anatomy and what can be done to stimulate it, well, you might be reading the wrong review.

Mark also indulges in all sorts of musical carrying on here. There's the funky "Nasty Bizness" (with more than a slight nod to Janet Jackson), a "Baby Got Back" parody called "Buddy Got Gut" and one hysterical country satire with the obvious title "Made for Sucking You." It's not all snorts and giggles, though. "Ben's Whips" explores the leather scene without condescension and "Soulsex Disclosure/Essence" gives a thorough and honest assessment of modern - read second-generation AIDS era - relationships in four minutes. You even get the elevation of a band that should be recognized as gay icons as Mark respectably covers Judas Priest's "Desert Plains."

I always wondered when I'd finally hear somebody make an album that was nothing but an unbridled gay male libido, and "Versatile" completely delivers music that literally has its creator indulging in the expression to "rock out with your c--k out." The double whammy of Mark Weigle's "Soulsex" is already one of my favorite CD's of 2005.

5 out of 5 stars SoulSex is all-consuming, high-spirited & FUN, like real sex.......2005-04-28

SoulSex's two CD's could each stand alone as good albums. One, "Wrestling The Angel", blends gentle country with soft rock and features Weigle's characteristic laid-back vocal delivery (reminiscent of Gordon Lightfoot). But Weigle stretches out from his formula on a few exceptional tracks: "Tires & Gasoline" remembers the murdered and forgotten Billy Jack Gaither - and takes on the hypocrisy of the Gay icon-marketing machine. Covering Cheryl Wheeler, "Unworthy" elicits smiles of recognition -- everyone I play it for thinks it's about them! -- and the urge to sing along. The most deftly-realized song on SoulSex, the proud, indiscreet, hauntingly subtle, and literally death-defying "Why Not Fly" gives me chills whenever I hear it.

But Mark really shines on the other disc, "Versatile". Unprecedentedly honest, clear and queer, unembarassedly explicit, these often-sensual songs are about his erotic tastes. Sex and desire are out and in-front, raunchy and personal. From hoedowns to rave-ups, from servicing truckers to a daddy-boy resting his head on daddy's belly, each detail combines for a real trip.

"Buddy Got Gut" is seductive, defensive, a riff on "Baby's Got Back", and sketch comedy. Then there's - well, I have to say it: I appreciate "Asshole", another hypocrisy-skewering lyric that takes on nothing less than flipping our bodily shame into pride, up-ending the idiocy of expressing disgust via homophobia right on its ass. "These Lips of Mine" begins: "I learned why the good lord gave me wrists / when he slapped those handcuffs on / And I praised god he gave me teeth / to get your zipper down," sung with just the cutest, most adorable, most perfect excited catch in the throat ever. But on "Desert Plains" Mark pays full-throated, Out loud homage to Rob Halford, Judas Priest's Out heavy metal pioneer, and the antithesis of laid-back.

Mark Weigle has taken quite a journey to get where he is (it's worth the effort for you to listen to his previous releases), and he shares the experience with you, for real. Not cliched Gay, nor outre Gay, nor "So-o-o" Gay, Mark's songs are simply unembarrassed, unapologetically Gay. And, by expressing his personal truth so well, he reaches for the universal human experience and touches it in our hearts.

Album Description

Los Angeles native Tracy Spuehler, whose radio hit "Where Do We Go?" went from airplay on L.A.'s influential KCRW-FM to viewers of national television via a Nissan commercial, has completed her second album, "It's The Sound." The new album builds on the tradition of her 2001 solo debut, six three one, which was described by New Times as weaving "elements of Juliana Hatfield's little-girl lilt, Aimee Mann's confessional pop and Liz Phair's indie-rock feistiness. But this native Angeleno puts so much of herself into the songs that her music winds up charmingly fresh and all her own." In this new collection of bittersweet, personal songs, Spuehler's songwriting really shines. Combining a natural ability for writing pop hooks with vivid storytelling, her songs unfold like an Indie Rock Sex & the City. The title track, "It's the Sound" is a celebration of the moment - a sunny, carefree pop song. "At The Frank Black Show" floods the speaker with emotion over an ex she! thinks she sees in the crowd, while the Pixies frontman is performing. And "Time," which "moves in a different way," features synth programming courtesy of Sean Spuehler, Tracy's brother, whose resume includes work with Madonna, R.E.M., Dido and Beck.

I gotta tell you. Tracy sings some of the most beautiful pop music I have ever heard. It is like she rediscovered a lost art. I just purchased 2 of her CD's. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy them. Her music is so refreshing. It just makes me feel so good!! I adore her writing. I think it would be fair to say "a young budding Carole King"

4 out of 5 stars Way Cool Pop w. some Indie Rock bite.......2004-12-03

I agree with the Amazon review-- a very nice album, & a step forward from the first IMO. The songs are deceptively simple-- really a lot of thought & some clever internal rhyming go on, & pretty good mix of sounds, though she might've fleshed out the accompaniment just a bit. Anyway though clever, infectiously interesting pop with folk & rock elements.

Album Description

The music's great! Some of my favourite cuts are, for down right Pure Sex Blues: "Your One & Only", "Ms. Jeneration Hip Zone", "Dirty One", and "Strut" do it for me. The acoustic cuts "Behind My Back" and "Prophet" hit the spot. "You Don't Know" "Get Me Out" and "The Fabulous New Debbie Song" are beautifully crafted and well executed songs. It's good to see Aussie wine get a mention, thanks!...Without sounding too sexist, I was first attracted to Cathy Jean from her shots in Living Blues. I could not wait to get the mag to see what shots there were of her. I'm glad she had a different photo in each issue. She's a "real spunk"-- that's Aussie for (I don't know) beautiful, hot, sexy, a 10, take your pick. The fact that she plays great guitar/writes songs and can sing is the icing, the strawberry and the cream on the cake... It's really the music that's important, we know that. The fact that it's Cathy Jean who is doing it makes it all the better. --Brett Parker, BluesBoxDownUnder Radio Show

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Angel/Devil--What else could we want?.......2003-02-19

In one moment, sweet-sounding voice of an angel; in the other, the scream of the devil... There is no better way to describe Cathy Jeans' extremely interesting voice which in some moments vibrates in the way that everything sounds even more colorful. There are not many white, female vocalists who are able to create the tension, passion and suspense that grabs the listener from the first note and keeps them interested until the end. Cathy is surely one of those who can! This successful result is also due to the material on the CD which is mostly Cathy's own and very personal. Music on the album is nothing but a happy and swaying rhythm-ýn-blues with some elements of pop or even sometimes jazz, which does not decrease the pleasure of listening at any time. Bluesy imagination; rocky spirit; and this woman's vocal, full of fire and pure sex... what else could we want? --Przemyslaw Draheim, "Twoj Blues" Magazine, Poland

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-11-13

Her vocal range and the passion she puts into her music is without equal. I hope her 4th disc is in my hands as soon as it's available. Please Cathy Jean carry on and thank you for some great music. I am learning the bass, and at the end of a cruddy day at the factory, I pick up my Fender, put in some Cathy Jean and play along and the day gets a whole lot better.

5 out of 5 stars scary and beautiful.......2002-09-11

Hi! Bought a CD, had to get a closer look and listen. I enjoyed it! Cathy Jean is brutally honest about herself. Glad she finds comfort and spirituality in the Blues. I find this latest CD scary and beautiful. Keep working those legs. I wonder if Robert Johnson ever did much leg work.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-18

I enjoy her music, in fact I love it. She is the best blues singer to come along in years... she puts her whole self into the music and that's what the blues is... you can hear it on her cd's... unbelievable... she just gets better all the time... don't ever stop!

5 out of 5 stars TexasFloodRadio review!.......2002-05-18

You just never really know what to expect next from this lady-- will it be something mellow with a groove, or nasty and in your face! My introduction to this artist came when I received her second CD, "I Want". As I was checking out all the saucy photos on the covers and in the booklet, I was prepared for some wannabe who was only told she could sing by guys who wanted to hear a different kind of tune coming from her, if you get my drift. (No offense, Cathy-- this was before I heard it!) The first thing I hear, though, is a blasting boogie where she's telling some guy to be glad "she don't like jail", otherwise she'd put a bullet in his head. Ouch. The thing is, she sounded great. A little threatening, but great! Now, on Cathy's third effort, "Marshall Road Apocalypse", she heads in a raunchier, rougher direction. As with her previous CD's, Cathy writes all her own material. This time, though, it seems as if she's been messed with one too many times, and she's exacting her revenge on all the evil-doers through her music-- and wins! Cathy's music is regularly played on TexasFlood Radio these days, so when you tune in, launch the floating playlist window. That way when one of her tunes plays, you can click on the "Buy" button right next to it, and pick up your own copies of her CD's. Or do it the easy way and take my word for it-- you will love these discs in your collection! --...

This is possibly the best Rockabilly band in years and years. The two albums they have are my two greatest buys. I know rockabilly, neo, traditional whatever, Ive listened for years..this is the real deal. If you are like me, enjoying a wide variety of rockabilly, this is the band you have been hoping to find, from high energy guitar riffs, growling vocals, this is the band. I guarentee this will be in your cd tray for weeks at a time. I cant say enough about Rockin Ryan and the Realgoners, except thank you! Keep rocking!

5 out of 5 stars great late 50's style rock'n'roll and some rockabilly.......2004-08-25

This cd captures Rockin' Ryan's wild and energetic stage presence, even though these are studio recordings. Ryan sings like a rockabilly star from around 1957, but without copying any particular 50's rockabilly icon, and therefore sounding original. This cd is different from his 1st lp, which sounded like mid 50's rockabilly, this cd is late 50's and even early 60's rock'n'roll ,with a few rockabilly and western swingy sounding tracks thrown in for good measure. The highlight of this cd is without a doubt his original "Spiderlegged Baby", where the witty lryics state "I was trying to kiss her lips, I was inbetween her hips... I was trying to kiss her face, I was inbetween her waste." A great cd, and it shows that Ryan is maturing wit hwach new release, here's looking forward to his next cd.

I think I have found a new favorite band. These guys are so good. I heard them through an old co-worker and was impressed immediately. I'm so glad I finally remembered about them and ordered their cds. They're really unique, so if you're looking for something new since you're tired of all your other music, I suggest you give this a try. There's two free songs on their website, which is http://www.hinthint.org/site so check it out and see what you think. But like I said, I highly recommend this band.

    5 out of 5 stars Impeccable taste.......2006-02-17

Mary Carewe is a Britisher with impeccable taste in lyrics and a delightful and fascinating voice. This is high-toned cabaret or, as she dubs her intimate program, "serious cabaret". If you like Ute Lemper or Bolcom and Morris, you'll enjoy Mary Çarewe. This is her only solo CD to date, but I can't help but believe that more are in the works for this talented soprano. Her big vocal range is matched by her big voice, which regularly accompanies symphonic orchestras in the UK and Europe in programs of modern music and pop, i.e., would you believe a program of James Bond film title songs with the Hallé orchestra?
