Album Description
Released in 1992, the original Arkansas Traveler is a travelogue of the old-time string band and fiddle tunes Michelle grew up playing in East Texas. Out of print since 1998, it features collaborations with a jawdropping list of Americana heroes and pioneers. This reissue has been digitally remastered and includes 7 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material.
Customer Reviews:
The original was awesome..........2007-05-01
I had the original CD from the early 90's. This is still one of my favorite all time works of music. One song threads right to the next seamlessly. Great music to drive to as well. "Come A Long Way" always inspires me. I feel like I'm on the back of the bike riding with her around LA.
Breathtaking.......2005-09-01
'Captain Swing' showed a more confident, more experimental Michelle Shocked than might have been expected from the breezy official debut, 'Short Sharp Shocked'. However, that confidence all too often expressed itself as swagger. With 'Arkansas Traveler' it has matured to an easy assurance. In this fabulous collection of songs, Shocked seems to have a hundred years of American music at her fingertips, and to be able to combine any ingredients from that century to creat something that is both fresh and familiar. Not since The Band's 'Music From Big Pink' has such a stylistic gumbo been created with such zest and integrity. In her sleeve notes, the artist credits 'Minstrel Music' with being the inspiration - and in so doing does herself a disservice. The album is richer and more layered than the simple term implies, and carries influences from a far wider range of Americana.
"Hey farmer...you been livin' here all your life? Not yet!".......2004-10-07
Back in the early '90's I became a fan of folk-rocker, Michelle Shocked after picking up a copy of the popular "Short, Sharp, Shocked". I loved that album as well as it's horn drenched successor "Captain Swing". But nothing prepared me for the release of her wonderful CD, "Arkanas Traveler". "Arkansas Traveler" is Michelle's homage to the 19th century musical form known as "Minstrel Music". Not many artists would have the guts to take on this music due to the racist manner (blackface makeup, derogatory humor) in which many of these songs were originaly presented over a century ago. But Michelle with both dignity and a really good sense of humor, tackled these classic songs of the American south, producing one of the best albums of her career. She gets plenty of help by being joined by a plethora of roots-music artists including the late Pops Staples, Taj Mahal, Gatemouth Brown, Doc Watson, Allison Krauss, Norman Blake, Hothouse Flowers, Uncle Tupelo ETC. With a group of journeymen such as these how could you go wrong? I love these tuneful classic songs, which can so easily get stuck in your brain. This happens everytime I hear her renditions of "Secret to a Long Life" or "Over the Waterfall". Sometimes I'll find myself singing these tunes for half the day, after hearing them. Other favorites include "Jump Jim Crow" (with it's Zippity Do-Dah ending), "Prodigal Daughter" & "Weaving Way". Finally there is the hilarious, spoken word routines of the song "Arkansas Traveler" ("Hey farmer... where does this road go to? Been livin' here all my life, it ain't gone no where yet!") I played these corny routines for my young nephews and it totally cracked them up into fits of laughter! For the longest time this CD was (criminally) out of print. It has now been re-released with crystal clear remastering and six bonus cuts featuring alternative takes and live renditions. I love this CD and highly recommend it!!
Michelle has Come Along Way.......2004-09-24
In this repackage Michelle has included about seven bonus tracks notably Come Along Way. When I first heard this song live in hollywood Sept 2004 I thought it was a touching new song relevant to the hustle and bustle in my beloved adopted city Los Angeles. I joined her on her walk to recover her bike from the Repo Man and met the immigrant lady waiting for the bus, the boys gaily standing in windows naked, the bridge we seldom cross in La. You know which one. before she sees the repo man. Afterwords I felt as if I WALKED 500 Miles! I was surprised how good this 1990 release sounds today as if it was recorded and recovered intact from a time capsule. Michelle has one of the strongest clearest ballsiest voices in show business that you may have never heard. If you need to get up to speed with with a talent that rivals KD Lang, Carole King, Paula Cole, Etta James, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams, George Thorogood, Laura Nyro or Susan Cowsill to name a few. Stick out your thumb and Pickup the Arkansas Traveler, remember in her eyes we still have a long way to go and she will return the favor!

Authentic Arkansas!.......2007-03-14
This is great stuff, really capturing the essence of the period. No matter what genre of music is your favorite, you will find this is something you can appreciate for its wonderful combination of talent.
Fabulous!.......2007-01-13
LOVE this CD! Was leery about having "fiddle tunes" constantly blaring through the house (my 8-yr-old is non stop when she loves a song), but the music is VERY enjoyable for the whole family.
This stuff is SOOOO great!.......2006-12-27
According to their web site, they're going to do ten discs in the "Little House" series, which will be a truly wonderful thing, if they can keep the quality as high as it is on the first two CDs in the set.
I set up a reading circle with my daughter, my granddaughter and a couple of their friends, keep the discs cued up to the songs (if they're on the two discs I currently own), and it has truly enriched our experience.
As a music historian, I'm thrilled to death to see these songs coming back to life.

Customer Reviews:
EXQUISITE ! DELIGHTFUL !.......2006-01-22
What a wonderful collection of excellently performed and acoustically marvelous music -- rousing, contemplative, romantic, cheery - some of which were the long-remembered and not-often-heard-now favorite songs of my childhood and youth.
Make sure you read the enclosure that is tucked away into the front cover of this CD -- written in 3 languages, it proides little-known informatin about some of these wonderful tunes and their composers, and the illustrations throught the booklet are also a very nice touch.
Listening to this CD can be an intoxicating experience - what delightful selections all on one CD! From Gershwin to Gould, from Anderson to Sousa and more - a lovely Broadway tune (from Carousel), and the old familiar Arkansas Traveler as well, (and even a little barking and whistling on "The Whistler and His Dog"!) this eclectic collection of pieces was artfully and unforgettably performed, much to my great enjoyment. Although this was the first time I ever heard the New London Orchestra perform, you can be sure that now I will look for other recordings of theirs. I also plan to buy another copy so I can play it in my cubicle (quietly when at work, but LOUDER when I am by myself -- hee hee!!).
What more can I say? I love this CD with its remarkable collection of songs!!!
Good for all collections.......2000-12-09
Well, here is an English orchestra recording pieces that some American orchestra should have done long ago. This is music to have fun with and much to my delight was a piece that I have only heard on a 10 inch LP. That is Sym 5 1/2 by Don Gillis. This is one of the best light pieces written in the 20th Century by an American, but sadly little performed. Buy it just for the Gillis piece and consider all the others as frosting on the cake. Take a break from Wagner and Glass and get this one and the three CD's of British Light Music. Just enjoy. Aloha..
A Disc that is a good time all by itself!.......1999-05-17
This recording is the kind that some American "Pops" Orchestras should be making. Most of these light classics are ones that the Boston Pops have recorded before, but I don't think have been done as well as Mr. Corp and the New London Orch., have done them. This disc is a real treat and I hope just the first of many. We as Americans need to rediscover our musical works.
An excellent compilation of light American classics.......1998-12-09
British composers are well known for writing for the "Proms" concerts that feature light symphonic fare. There is much less American music in the same vein as Eric Coates, Edward German and Ronald Quilter, but conductor Ronald Corp has unearthed some real treasures on this disc of mostly short, light pieces. Amazon's listing doesn't include two of the best selections on the disc, Richard Rogers' Carousel Waltz and Don Gillis entertaining Symphony 5 1/2, subtitled "Symphony for Fun." It's a real crowd pleaser, and the fine sound on the recording is a good match for the entertaining repertoire.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have for fans........2004-07-15
If you're buying your first Michelle Shocked, this album probably isn't the best one. Probably better is her best-of collection, "Mercury Poise" although her breakthrough album "Short Sharp Shocked" is where most of us became fans and remains one of her most brilliant works.
But, if you're a fan filling out your collection -- "Arkansas Traveler" is a must-have.
"Cotton Eye Joe" is one of her best songs, ever. But the rest of the album is good-to-very-good as well.
If you are a fan, I doubt you'll be disappointed in this album. Even the lesser albums of Michelle Shocked are better than most music out there!
Top comedy album.......2003-11-09
The CD liner notes mention blackface minstrelsy as "the real `roots' of many of the tunes included." Some of the songs have double titles, possibly one for the words and another for the name of the tune that old-timers would recognize. For example, "Prodigal Daughter (Cotton Eyed Joe)" ends with a long instrumental that could be background music for any great theatrical extravaganza. The first verse is about the typical prodigal son story, but the woe, "Oh Cotton Eyed Joe" line is reserved for the pathetic girl who's "bringing such shame to the family name." The scene is dramatic enough to stage:
Look, here comes a prodigal son
Fetch him a tall drink of water
But there's none in the cup
because he drank it all up
Left for a prodigal daughter
Singing Oh Cotton Eyed Joe
Comedy provides the only lines in the "Arkansas Traveler" song, with a farmer who isn't lost talking to a stranger who would like to know where the road goes. Jimmy Driftwood, who gets credit for guitar and vocals, wrote songs when I was very young. "Woody's Rag (W. Guthrie)" is entirely instrumental with a slightly different bunch of pickers.
The songs seem to delay their messages for a long time. Singing about a river sets up a situation for "Over the Waterfall," but the reason for the song is saved for the very end: It don't hurt you when you fall, boys; only when you land. The song I like best is "Secret to a Long Life." I don't really need all the fiddle playing. Mandolin, accordian, bass, drums, and guitars in Woodstock, NY are fine backing for the story that song tells.
A MASTERPIECE.......2003-09-22
This is simply a Masterpiece. And to set the record straight, this was produced by Michelle Shocked herself, contrary to what has been said before, the only song produced by Don Was is Come A Long Way (brilliantly produced by the way). Recorded in interesting places like an antique store, a Riverboat and some living rooms, with some of Michelle's own heroes. A lot of history in this record that tells you that "bluegrass music is not only white poeple's music, but black people's music as well" I have been listening to this record since '92 at least once a week. Can't live without it.
great country.......2003-05-07
This is one of the best country albums that I've heard. Michelle Shocked continues to impress me with every album that I find of hers. This is as good or better than most of what is coming out of country music today and the songwriting is probably better. Shocked defies categorization, but this is almost a niche album. The sound is closer to a classic country feel than today's pop-country music, but it is as well produced as any Shania Twain album. There is more depth, and more emotion in Shocked's voice than many singers can hope to ever produce. Simply said: this is a great album and is a must have for a fan of Michelle Shocked, country music, or just good music. Arkansas Traveler transcends the genre it has fallen in to and lands in the simple category of "good music".
Michelle Shocked at the peak of polish & perfection!.......2003-04-01
OK, so Michelle Shocked has not sustained the interest of much of the music buying and listening public. This album was, however, her peak of polish and perfection. Very-well-produced by Don Was, accompanied by a Who's Who of musicians from a number of persuations (The Band, Doc Watson, Uncle Tupelo, Taj Mahal, Norman Blake, Gatemouth Brown, Allison Krauss, The Hothouse Flowers, and Pop Staples, among others) blending new compositions and classics, Ms. Shocked put forth an album that by all rights SHOULD have catapulted her into the sustained limelight of the music buying and listening public.
If you have not listened to any of Michelle Shocked's albums, this would be a magnificent starting point! (All of her albums are available directly from her Mighty Sound label... details are in her new album, "Deep Natural".)
