3 out of 5 stars Where have I heard this before?.......2004-07-07

If you think Promised Land or Hear in the Now Frontier is Queensryche's best album, and wish there were more albums out there that sounded exactly like them, then have I got a deal for you! Masquerade was obviously very influenced by later Queensryche material when they wrote Surface of Pain. In fact, if you played both discs on random you'd probably have a hard time telling the bands apart. Surface of Pain is decent progressive hard rock, sometimes approaching metal. The songs are quite good, and band has plenty of talent, but you can't help but wish they had just a bit more originality (or that they had imitated a better Queensryche album). It's definitely worth picking up at such a low price.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I stumbled onto this one!!!.......2000-08-29

I read a favorable review of this album and decided to buy it. I'm glad I did!!! These guys can ROCK!!! I listened to it almost constantly for several months. "Suffering", "End of Nothing", and "Free My Mind" are all among my very favorite metal tunes. I saw they have a follow-up album called "Pinocchio" and am very anxious to hear it. If you are looking for a little-known band that can really kick with the best of them, give Masquerade a try...you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-07-23

A total surprise when I came across the band via a compilation. I had to get the CD and was not disappointed in any way. Dream Theater, Queensryche are indeed comparators but the band has its strong own identity.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Swedish Metal!!.......1999-06-18

"Surface of Pain" has been in my top 5 CD rotation since it's release! This is an excellent recording with great musicianship, vocals, and writing. Eagerly awaiting a follow up!!!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better than this.......1998-09-03

If you like bands like Queensryche and Fates Warning you will love this. From the first to the last song this is a solid cd. One of the best I've heard in a long time. I thought Heavy Metal might have died, but this album has given me new hope that it is still alive and kickin'. Album reminds me of Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche. Enjoy!!!
