a great band left off the radar.......2006-06-25
the first time i ever heard of this band is when i saw the video for "kid candy" on beavis and butt-head. right away i realized that this video was shot in a park two blocks from my house. i first found spanaway at tower records back in about '95. i have been a fan ever since. i also knew the lead singers father because he was the swim couch at my old high school. i wish they would come back together and give fame another whirl because with some of the music out there now, everybody could use some seaweed treatment
Tacoma!.......2005-08-14
"Four" is old school hardcore refined and polished to a gleaming, pop shine.
This album got Seaweed a major label contract. Kid Candy made it to MTV.
Seaweed was emblematic of the bright moment for American alternative music between '89 and '94. Stephanie OD'd, Mia was murdered, Kurt killed himself, and people decided that the Northwest musical aesthetic wasn't happy enough, I guess. Bring on Weezer!
Tacoma produced Seaweed, Girl Trouble, Botch, Neko Case, and The Mexican Blackbirds. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
NOT grunge........2005-07-07
Seaweed had the unfortunate tag of grunge because
they happened to be on sub pop at the "right time"
they do more pop,sing-along punk ( think pegboy.)
catchy tunes that stick with ya through the day.
buy this with weak and you're set.
Grunge? False........2005-02-22
This album recieved such great reviews from everyone here on amazon, so I figured it would be worth the five dollar pricetag. I popped it into my stereo and was overcome with a wave of dissapointment. There is no comparison between seaweed and nirvana, soundgarden, or any of the more hailed grunge bands of the early nineties. Seaweed is like listening to a bunch of drunk strangers in a garage somewhere learn how to play together. While Seaweed did represent the Northwest scene, this album sounds much more like punk to me than grunge. The riffs are too fast and irritating and the lead singers voice is too whiny to be called grunge. Instead, I would say this band is a cross between emo and punk with a very small bit of real rock-n-roll mixed in. Unless you love seaweed, this album is far from memorable.
i agree with everyone below me.......2005-01-07
at a time when all we knew was grunge and seattle and matt dillon playing a rocker dude, it's strange that one of the most powerful and creative bands of the time barely got recognition. this album, also from the washington area, is brimming with ultimate catchy riffs, fast paced punk leading into great choruses and melodic breakdowns. this album is really, really good. seaweed meant alot to me when i was younger, but upon hearing them again i would have to say they are timeless. all the riffs are catchy and the variety of song styles is perfect while maintaining their drive and emotion. the lyrics still make sense and are delivered sincerely. Seaweed's music strays from the typical sludgy manifestation of grunge rock like soundgarden and nirvana and instead focuses more on dynamics and melodies. the result is somewhere between quicksand and jawbreaker. ultimately hard to pigeonhole, but wholly unique and enjoyable. i would also agree with the others below me that this is the album you should own of all their albums. the previous album was also good. but this one in particular is good straight through. they should have been as big and influential as nirvana. but i'm biased, ce la vie.

Amazing Band.......2005-12-27
I've been a fan of their music since 1997 when my sister gave me a mix tape entittled: Music 4 Bording 2. I heard the first song and it just blew me away ( the song was "Crush us all"). This is my all time favorite punk song. It took me years to find out who sang it, but once I did, I knew I had to buy this sucker. So do yourself a favor and buy this CD if you want the best punk rock music money can buy, or if you're happy with those sissy bands out there that don't offer much, don't buy this album.
Just some great friggin music!.......2005-06-23
I don't know what kind of metal they play in New England, but in Tacoma we would call this some good damn punk. Forget about those little prissy sellout metal groups like Metallica and Guns and Roses, these guys just love to play, and they sure as hell know how!
Pearls before swine.......2005-06-17
Yeah, Seaweed's sound evolved, changed about three times. Some folks gotta problem with that, I guess. Spanaway was a transitional album, moving away from the early hardcore sound which culminated in the brilliant Four, but toward a more complex sound, a sound that found its zenith with the polished, focused anger of A&I.
Yeah, I can do without the power ballad too. But Spanaway does grow on you after about three listens - "Free Drug Zone", "Common Mistake", "Undeniable Hate" all have as many hooks and as much power as anything in the Seaweed catalog.
Seaweed, we miss you.
Why the hate?.......2005-03-01
For those of you don't know them, Seaweed plays grunge/pop-punk with huge-sounding guitars and a whole lot of Quicksand influence (i.e., not entirely melodical, but still good)
This isn't Seaweed at their best, but if you see it in the used bin, it's worth your money. The first couple of listens it'll be pretty bad aside from Crush Us All and Start With, but it'll grow on you a good deal. If you were committed to buying a Seaweed album, I'd steer towards Four or Actions and Indications (depending on wether you want RAWK or feeling, respectively). A worthwhile purchase, but probably for somebody who's already a Seaweed fan
mediocre metal .......2004-09-12
Another band that came out of the Pacific Northwest in the 90's, Tacoma, Washington to be exact. From what I gather, they had some decent stuff on various indie labels, but as so often the case, this major label release was mediocre metal at best.

All the emo kids of today should be looking back here for inspiration. So much of what passes today is Weak (pun intended) but lacks subtly, honesty and rounded emotions of this album. Unfortunately fashion rules the roost and as a result, we only get what is weak.

Don't let anyone tell you Seaweed aren't survivors. The black sheep of the Seattle (well, Tacoma, actually) rock scene, Seaweed have endured the sting of consumer apathy, the departure of founding drummer Bob Bulgrien, and a bitter severance from the Hollywood Records roster shortly after being touted as the greatest thing since fast-food sushi. Unfortunately, determination isn't always tantamount to musical brilliance. The band's sixth album, Actions and Indications, is punchy and loud, and it's a fair shake better than the group's major-label effort Spanaway, but it doesn't match the unrestrained exuberance of Weak or Four. Aaron Stauffer's vocals are still brash and bratty, and guitarists Clint Werner and Wade Neil retain their metallic punch, but many of the songs seem somewhat formulaic, often substituting volume and dissonance for real emotion. That being the case, Seaweed still have a knack for melodic bluster, and if you're not familiar with their earlier oeuvre, songs like the anthemic "Antilyrical," the Sonic Youth-inspired "Steadfast Shrine," and the blustery "Red Tape Parade" are still better than most of today's hooky punk product. --Jon Wiederhorn

Don't be afraid of change.......2005-03-01
So I got Four in the mail today, and I can see how others might be disappointed by Actions and Indications. This a different Seaweed, though still retaining the things that make them Seaweed. They hinted at this with Spanaway, but this is a much better effort.
The album starts off with Antilyrical, a very clear introduction to their Quicksand-esque sound. It's a good track, but not something I switch back to. Through the Window, however, is a gem. Nostalgic, warm, but with a gigantic guitar riff that still shreds. Steadfast Shrine shows the softer side of the album. It's not excellent, but they've got the right idea. It's followed by Red Tape Parade, another big rocker. Actually, I don't like it but my friend loves it. Against the Sky is my second favorite on the album. Extremely sincere, but with a guitar riff that bursts through with a sense of pride. Sounds amazing when played at ear-drum bursting volumes (and shows off the album's excellent production as well). Let Go and Stay Down aren't their strongest either, but their place in the album is well thought out, and helps it wind down, making it very cohesive.
I've had this album for over a year now and it's one of the elite few that find its way in every month or two. The first time I listened to it, I listened twice through, which I never do. Truthfully, I'd recommend buying this album first out of them all, and then moving backwards, so you don't get all grumpy like the rest of the reviewers here
Strong for what it is.......2002-03-26
To me the reviews posted here are about people's expectations and not about the actual CD. I haven't listened to a Seaweed CD in at least a year and the last time I did it was "Four" and "Go Your Own Way." For posterity's sake, here is a complete listing of their recordings:
Despised - 1991 (Sub Pop)
Weak - 1992 (Sub Pop)
[self-titled] - 1991 (Tupelo Records)
Measure - 1992 (Sub Pop)
Four - 1993 (Sub Pop)
Go Your Own Way - 1993 (Sub Pop)
Spanaway - 1995 (Uni/Hollywood)
Actions & Indications - 1999 (Merge Records)
That's a pretty good career in the music industry. Several of those albums are real gems...but let's get on with this CD and try to not reflect back on "the good ol' days."
"Actions and Indications" is a standout piece for a band coming off a four-year layoff. Granted, I am here writing a review of the band's release two years late, but what I am hearing now, I like. It has a lot of energy and reminds me of emo-core/post-hardcore bands such as Rival Schools (wonder why, considering Alan Cage from Quicksand is behind the kit on this disc.) I was impressed with "Against The Sky," "Steadfast Shrine," and I personally loved the cover of Joy Division's "Warsaw" (of course, Joy Division was a staple of my coming of age years.) Aaron Stauffer's vocals are still tight and acerbic...just the type of wit I like. The guitar breaks and hooks definitely are strong and really gives that poppy feel that is what makes emo so strong - lyrics that connote the emotion that Clint Werner and Wade Neil are belting out.
Overall, I was impressed. For a 1999 CD I enjoyed this a lot and think it falls into the mainstream interpretation of emo that most people enjoy. I don't try to judge it against their past works...the experiences and memories are too strong for many albums to overcome those works.
Tangled up in blue.......1999-11-22
Although Seaweed used to spawn three-minute anthems like a busy chicken in heat, Actions and Indications' stand-out tracks seem unnatural, as if they were born by cesarean. New drummer Alan Cage (Quicksand) pummels the daylights out of "Red Tape Parade," but its half-hearted, spoken verses and uninspired chorus celebrate nothing but blandness. Only "Warsaw" hints at the balls-out riff-rock of the band's glory days - a point puzzlingly reached by a Joy Division cover from Ian Curtis' insipid neo-Nazi period. "In the Middle" and "Let Go" close the album with a glimpse of hope, the former building its foundation on a mere three phrases. In this line of work, less is more. When it's done right, Seaweed's brand of artsy punk is gleefully adolescent and transparent with enough of a dark side to keep the kids thinking. Betraying its audience with an equally transparent self-righteousness, Seaweed offers little more than a view into its newly dug grave.
A solid album for old and new Seaweed fans alike!.......1999-05-12
After listening to this album, its hard to believe that Seaweed have wallowed in obscurity for as long as they have. Their album captures the energy and intesity that today's rock is all about. Forget the labels and stereotypes and all your expectations. Just play this CD while driving in your car. You might not get it after the first listen but after several plays the album's power and complexities will shine through. Seaweed have probably made their most mature and solid album to date.
A Complete Disappointment.......1999-04-28
As an avid Seaweed fan who owns all of their Cd's, and has seen them many, many times live, this album is not at all representative of the past brillance of this band. If you thought that their last effort was weak (no pun intended), this album will not rekindle the fire of Despised, Weak, Four, or any of their ep's (Measure was a gem). This band may be suffering from a major label hangover.

A great EP to introduce you to the wonders of seaweed!.......1998-12-28
I'm glad they are rereleasing this disk (it originally came out in 1993). "Measure" begins with "Measure's got a brand new life/we'll see who sticks it out this time". It's kind of a cool song to have in your head, pushing you to try something new and to stick with it. Overall, Seaweed and especially this CD are one of the best punk/pop bands out there and have been since before punk was "cool" according to the record exec's and radio stations. "Taxing" is a great commentary on how anything you do, someone will find a way to charge you for it. "Baggage" is a reference to all the BS that people bring into relationships from their previous ones. Overall, it is a great social commentary delivered in driving punk beats from one of the best bands out there. (If you're thinking "If they're so good, Why haven't I heard of them before?," It's because they'd rather play good music, play nintindo, and hang out with their girlfriends than promote themselves thru means other than constant touring with shows under $5. If you get a chance, don't miss checking out their music, especially live.

Album Description
During the 1970s, the third decade of Wroblewski's career, he truly became an indispensable ingredient in the many flavors being created. Wroblewski was already an accomplished tenor and baritone player in a variety of bands, leading his own small groups with straightahead inclinations and a love of Horace Silver phrasing. But the accomplishments of Mainstream have become obscured by his much closer association with free jazz and Studio Jazzowe Polskiego Radia. Created in 1968, the Studio was a unique blend: part venue for free expression by virtuosos and soloists and part workshop for musicians and composers. It would be virtually impossible to find any important Polish jazz composer or soloist who at one time or another in their career had not been involved with the Studio. Musicians, composers and soloists had a chance to test their own ideas and have them confronted and discussed in a peer-group setting. Without the Studio and without its leader, Wroblewski,! Polish jazz would not be the same.
