Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

    As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

    Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

    But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

          Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...

          3 out of 5 stars Remixed for a Second Listen.......2005-09-09

          To those of you who were disappointed by Suicide's "new direction" when this album was released over a decade ago, you now have the chance to listen to it from a new prospective. Martin Rev took the final master recording and processed it through an assortment of reverb, flanger and delay effects resulting in a very hypnotic mix. Compare the versions of "Pump It" and "Universe" on this album to the original and you'll hear what I'm talking about.

          While it's still not one of their best releases, this new mix gives it more of that experimental edge that Sucide has been known for which was missing on Ric Ocasek's original mix. I'm just glad to see that it's at least back on the shelves of record stores after being out of print for over a decade, although it will be forever overshadowed by their first album.

          The album also comes with a live disc recorded back in 1989 for the die-hard fans out there. While the sound quality is lacking (which is the case with nearly all Suicide live shows), the energy in the concert makes up for it. It's a shame that the music is buried beneath the vocals because Martin Rev really dishes out catchy tunes on this one, some of which never made it to the studio. Alan Vega is also in good spirit and the crowd shows no signs of indifference. Each song is met with cheers and praise, thus making Vega get a bit more frantic in his vocals.

          While the original studio album may not been that great, it now has two reasons worth checking it out a second time.

          This is the least essential Suicide recording by a long-shot. Released after the magnificent "A way of life", "Why be Blue" was the greatest Suicide's disappointment so far. Cheesy tunes and weak melodies and a production that was too awful to be believed . They say that the album has been improved a little with this new remaster, but I wouldn't recommend it anyway. It's always been Suicide's weakest effort. Maybe their legendary reputation as the fathers of industrial/electronic music made them to rest on their laurels, but the truth is that this album constitutes an indelible stain on their career. If you don't believe me, just listen to it and compare it to the early releases by the band; there's simply no comparison to be made between them.

          This is like a mix of beautiful and ugly sound, at first I didn't like it now I love it.

          For a band who started out as an innovative synth rock duo in the '70s this is truly a very poor album. It sounds like Depeche Mode's "A broken frame" or Pet Shop Boys' "Please" robbed of all good melodies. Even Alan Vega's unpredictable and manic vocals, which added so much energy and drive to their earlier albums, have gone into boring talk-singing. The best songs are the title tracks and "Flashy love", the rest is not memorable. "Why be blue" was released in 1992, but that's simply unbelievable, because the music sounds like being made in the early-'80s. Why did they release such a bland and uninspired album? I suppose they've run out of money. If you wanted to know what Suicide really is about, buy their self-titled debut album!
