As former graf artists, MCs Tame One and El Da Sensei gained fans among writers worldwide with their ode to spray-can art on "Wrong Side of the Tracks." Post new-school artists with an old school bent, the Artifacts smartly meshed their own frenetic rhyme pacing with heavy, blunted beats (courtesy T-Ray, Buckwild, and others). While Between a Rock and a Hard Place fell short as a certified classic (its lack of variety limited its strengths), it still had its share of great underground anthems--from "C'mon wit da Git Down," "Lower da Boom," and "Dynamite Soul." --Oliver Wang

"The first and last showin' of graffiti rock...".......2007-05-12
Artifacts' 1994 debut introduced a hip hop duo to the rap world that fought against the grain of the quickly commercializing rap game. El da Sensei and Tame One are two New Jersey natives and former graffiti artists, and they celebrate the original spirit of hip hop. Their tracks are all impeccably produced, dense with instrumentation and rich horns, but the beats and bass stay hard and thumping; no one would ever mistake this for a pop record and they're proud of it. The producers include Redman and two very underrated east coast beatcrafts, T-Ray and Shawn J Period. As rappers, they stay true to themselves and their genre too. They deliver clever battle rhymes and braggadocio, telling some stories and always representing their home state. This album showcases some of the nicest production and rhyming of 1994, Artifacts was a unique hip hop product and is really underrated. I feel that they were often overlooked because at this time they might have been overshadowed by some other fairly similar artists, but any fan of the early-90s east coast sound will love "Between a Rock and a Hard Place."
After the short instrumental intro, the album begins with "C'Mon Wit da Git Down," which might be my favorite song on the album. The loopy bassline and scattered horn blasts create a funky and laidback vibe, I love the hook and the lyrics are clever. The similarly great "Wrong Side of da Tracks" is probably their best known song. Over catchy sax-heavy production, El and Tame One rap about their lives as graffiti artists. "Heavy Ammunition" is appealing boom bap, with more horns and a well-sampled hook. "Attack of New Jeruzalem" is an NJ anthem, upbeat and funky with heavy horn instrumentation, the rhymes are dope and it's a nice track. "Notty Headed N." is solid but not the most memorable track because it's similar to a lot of "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," although the verses are very good. I really like "Whayback," a shout out to hip hop's founding fathers that is very interesting musically. "Flexi With da Tech(nique)" is slow and bass heavy, with typically great raps from Tame One and El da Sensei. Redman produced the nice "Cummin' Thru Ya F...' Block," which has a funk groove that wouldn't sound out of place on a Def Squad production. "Lower da Boom" is a likable weed ode. The breezy "What Goes On?" is a highlight, nice vibes and slick rhymes. I really like the heavy bass and pumping horns in "Dynamite Soul," a feel good song. Another Redman production, "Whassup Now Muthaf...?," follows. The album closes with a very nice remix to "C'Mon Wit da Git Down," including an excellent guest appearance from Busta Rhymes.
Artifacts would go on to deliver one more album, 1997's That's Them, before breaking up and drifting into solo careers. Even if you didn't catch the Artifacts wave the first time around, this album is really one worth adding to the collection for east coast fans. It's got the kind of beats to play loud from the car and the kind of lyrics to make you smile while just chilling. I highly recommend "Between a Rock and a Hard Place."
IF YOU DIG THAT UNDERGROUND GRAF VIBE, THIS IS ESSENTIAL.......2007-03-04
look here, i dig this joint because it is good raw hip hop. however, the beats could have been fatter. if the beats were on that YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW/ENTA DA STAGE VIBE, i would have dug this even more. other than that, it is a decent head noddah.
EL DA SENSEI AND TAME ONE .......2007-01-03
Well another solid hip hop album from start to end. Here is another one where it is hard as hell to pick something that I dont like on here. I have to say this is one album that I can still play today in 2007 and it sounds good. These two rappers from New Jersey sound good as they go back and forth. It is sad that they broke up and only had 2 albums out. They are doing there thing on the Independant scene and makeing good stuff. I am biased and have to say that I like El Da Sensei more than Tame One but dont get it wrong Tame One is still nice. This is 2 guys that I would like to see get back toghether and make another album for the sake of real hip hop fans.
...And Like I Never Heard Of These Guys (Rating: 9 out of 10).......2006-10-31
These guys MC El & Tame One from New Jersey were known as The Artifacts back in '94. Now I never heard of these guy up until about 2 months ago, so that means I still have more research to do in hip hop. What I like about this album is that these guys came with straight lyrical skills on their behalf. One track I keep playing repeatedly is "C'mon With The C'mon, Get Down With The Get Down". I just believe the beat on that song is so nice as both lyricists makes it an easy going sound. "Wrong Side Of The Tracks" is a dope sounding song too.
Production wise is excellent on this here. T-Ray supplies most of the beats on here. Buckwild does a few, and Redman does only one. And what I like about these beats is that they each have sort of a blend to create the atmosphere of the album so it gives it a relaxing but hard sounding album like many not so well known albums back in '94.
As for problems, I can only think of a few minor ones. I'm pretty sure they loved Redman so much, but I thought the sample to "Notty Headed Nigguz" just didn't fit in my opinion. Also there is a bonus track (#14) "C'mon With The C'mon, Get Down With The Get Down (Remix)" that was produced by Buckwild that features Busta Rhymes. Although the song doesn't make an impact as the origonal production wise, and the way Busta says the hooks makes him sound off beat a little bit. Other than that, this album makes a great collection in your library. I just happened to discover artists from NJ that were never too popular around '93-'94 era (like Lords Of The Underground, etc.) and came across this group. Give it a listen, and you'll enjoy it.

Mine is fine!.......2005-12-04
I just received my copy today and there are no pressing errors. Seems to me that only the original pressing errors. Killer box set! I've been holding out for years to get Ultra-Violence on CD... I'm glad I waited, all the CDs and DVD are awesome!
Got replacement disks.......2005-03-16
I bought this box set too and noticed the track errors - no Kill As One demos!! But I emailed someone at ryko and they sent me replacement discs. The box set is awesome. You can email rykodisc here: earful@rykodisc.com
Should have been amazing....but wrong tracklisting .......2005-02-18
Been looking forward to this for a long time it seems.
OK well this is the deal....Disc 1 "The Ultra-Violence" is simply one of the finest thrash metal albums ever. So, if you never bought it first time around (shame on you if you didn't) here it is again.
Unfortunately the end of disc 1 is where the problems begin (at least on my set. The final 3 tracks are SUPPOSED to be "Thrashers" / "Kill as One" / "The Ultra-Violence" from the LEGENDARY Kill As One demo 85. They are nowhere to be found.
It appears that pressing error was made on Rycodisc's part. Instead what you get for the final tracks on disc 1 are "Dehumanization" / "Silent Killer" / "Witches of Knave". which were SUPPOSSED to be the 3 bonus tracks on disc 2.
OK, if you're still with me here, it only gets more confusing. Disc 2 " Frolic Through the Park" ALSO has a pressing error. The 3 bonus tracks on this one are mislabeled also. What you end up getting are tracks 4, 5 & 6 on the Rarities CD #3.
So, you end up getting to hear "A passing Thought" / "Elegy" / "Aspirations" on both disc 2 & 3.
This whole deal was a HUGE disapointment for me. The "Kill as One" demo never apppears anywhere on this set. The packaging is rather weak in my opinion. No Lyrics sheets like were on the original pressings of The Ultra-Violence & Frolic Through the Park. There is some cool old gig flyers in the layouts...but why omit the lyrics?? It would have been real nice to hear some more info about the rarities CD also. Virtually no info is given beyond song titles....and God only knows if they are right given the tracklist errors with the other 2 discs.
In short...disc one "The Ultra-Violence"....a must have true thrash classic. Disc 2 "Frolic Through the Park"...solid album through overall not as aggressive as the debut. Somewhat more mature and experimental. Still some really great tracks. "Shores of Sin" & "3rd Floor" for starters. Disc 3 Rarities disc.....cool to hear, but honestly the majority was rather lackluster and forgetful. I can see why these songs never saw the light of day previously. Mostly for the diehard fans. Disc 4 the DVD....can't comment yet as I haven't watched it.
Hopefully Rycodisc has been made aware of the pressing errors and will correct it ASAP. I ended up returning my box set due to the errors. I do plan on buying it again if the errors are corrected for subsequent pressings.
Get This Box Set!!!.......2005-02-05
If you dont already have the 1st two Death Angel cds or even if you do, buy this box set. Its definitely an improvement from when they were first released. The dvd is also very cool. It gives you more information as to what the band members used to be like. If you like Bay Area Thrash, Get this

ABOUT THE SAME AS THE FIRST ONE.......2007-03-04
for me, this has about the same feel as the first one. i hate that they broke up though. i would've liked to see what they would've done as time progressed in hip hop. i agree with one of the viewers though when the person said it is hip hop as it should be. as i said before, the beats could be fatter.
The Artifacts Legend {4.5 Stars}.......2007-03-02
When most people speak about the Artifacts, it's almost as if they're telling an old legend or fairy tail. Two incredibly ill emcees rise from underground to drop two LP's that exhibit jaw dropping rhymes (at the time) and excellent, excellent production. Then, said emcees, with boundless amounts of potential, vanish into thin air when it appears that they are in a position to take control and dominate the rap game for a long, long time. This has all the makings of a great story to tell around a camp fire. Seriously though, Tame and El's last release as a duo is not only slept on, but it's practically flawless. With excellent production, a DJ that is off the meter, and rhymes that were simply unapproachable, the Artifacts not only embodied all things hip hop, but they also managed to capture that vibe and it comes through on the That's Them LP. Hell, even their graffiti was phat. Long story short -- everything about this album is on point.
As far as flaws go, I found that things begin to start sounding the same toward the end of the album. There aren't any wack tracks, but there are a couple toward the tail end that gave me a "I've heard it before" type of feeling. Personally, I found "This Is Da Way", "Skwad Training", and the Beatminerz produced "It's Gettin' Hot" to be skip material in my book. I'm not saying they're wack, but they do nothing for the ears of this particular listener. You may love them though.
That's Them is the second of only two releases from the Artifacts. They would go on to break up and aren't even on speaking terms anymore (or so I was told by El) which makes this album that much more of a collector's item because, more than likely, there will never be another Artifacts album released ever again. At any rate, this is one of those hip hop albums that contains vibes that make your ears perk up as your head nods uncontrollably. Tame and El have magnetic flows and the production is nothing more than that ill, neck jerking, b-boy sh**. What more can you ask for? I recommend making this one a collection piece.
Standout Tracks: To Ya Chest, Art Of Facts (My Favorite), The Interview, Collaboration Of Mics feat. Lord Finesse & Lord Jamar, The Ultimate (Showbiz Remix), 31 Bumrush, Return To Da Wrongside, Where Yo Skillz At?, Ingredients To Time Travel, and Art Of Scratch (Intro)
You need this.......2006-11-08
This is one of the only CDs worthy of a 5 out of 5 in hip hop. The beats, lyrics, and production are all outstanding. Classic New Jeruz album. All you need to do is take a listen to the samples above. I know it sounds bandwagon, but I think Illmatic is the best album ever, but other than that I would say this is definitely worthy of being in the top 10. "That's Them", Royal Flush "Ghetto Millionare" and Mic Geronimo "The Natural" are probably three of the most overlooked albums in hip hop.
hip hop how it should be..........2006-02-24
This is the follow up to the 1994 album Between a Rock and a Hard Place. That was a classic album and so this LP had a lot to live up to. But it succeeds by bringing that classic hip hop style while making the transition in to an era that was dominated by everything "gangsta". El Da Sensei and Tame One come from a true hip hop background as they are both graf artists originally and they manage to keep that element running throughout their music. I never really understood why this album got so overlooked when it was released, as it had all the things you need for a classic, including tight production from Shawn J and Lord Finesse, as well as El and Tame's lyrical skills. If you've heard the 1st album, this won't disappoint and if you've never heard the Artifacts before, this is an excellent place to start.
That's Them.......2005-11-28
I love this album I have gotten this one the same time Id gotten the first 1 and I didnt know which one to play this is a good CD too it has good underground feel it also has lyrics for your a.. This is hot if you dont have this you need to get it.

Customer Reviews:
The Fire Note Says: Retro-Cool!.......2007-04-21
Any band coming out of Detroit right now still gets the garage rock comparisons. Leave that thought at the door because The Singles hail from Detroit but only share some qualities with those other bands like their liveliness and tight musicianship. The Singles are a straight up power pop band that have a very modern Kinks sound. Start Again is The Singles sophomore release and it expands on the retro sound found on their debut Better Than Before [2003], while still retaining the heart of the band and never leaving that core sound. What does stand out is that Start Again turns up the amps a bit more with heavier rockers like "I Want You Back Now" and "Hypnotized" that sound great blaring at high volumes. The album also has better transitions that flow seamlessly track to track and balance the harder charging songs with perfect timeless 2 minute Buddy Hollyish nuggets such as "Cryin' Over You". If you have not checked out The Singles, I would recommend you pick up both Start Again and Better Than Before because they are a breath of fresh air that really do a great job of repackaging a sixties sound for a new generation. Trust me you will be entertained!

Customer Reviews:
Great psych comp.......2002-09-19
This is quality product for those interested in obscure late 60's psychedelic music -- great packaging, informative liner notes, and (most importantly) uniformly good material from the various groups. Some highlights: a proto-techno rethinking of the blues classic "Baby please don't go" by Ballroom, Chris Carpenter's insane "This world is closing in on me," JK & Co.'s achingly beautiful "Fly," wanna-Beatles Wildflowers' "More than me," and The Fourth Way's "The far side of your mind," which was described by someone as sounding like soundtrack music from Barbarella. Cool.
A solid collection, as good as any.......2002-01-28
I have about ten CDs of rare psych compilations and a system of rating each track. This compilation is excellent. Like such compilations, don't expect to be immediately tripped out by each track. However, there are almost no truly weak tracks here. Some aren't stereotypically "psychedelic", but they are all enjoyably packed full of distinctive character, whether melancholy, haunting, odd, or offbeat. Also get the more stereotypically heavy-psych companion: "An Overdose of Heavy Psych". I strongly and confidently recommend both.

Cruxshadows concert disc.......2005-10-07
I picked up this CD at a concert, largely for the "leave me alone" track, which I had heard in the club and hadn't been able to find elsewhere. This is a good album, although despite being a mix of all their previous work, not as cohesive as an album as their studio stuff. Their cover of "here comes the rain again" is excellent, rogue's voice adding depth and melodrama to the already excellent song. The last song is the german version of deception, which is one of my favorite CX songs. The german version sounds deceptively like the english, but in many ways is even smoother. Aside from these things, I would reccomend the other CX discs over this one, unless you're looking for one of the specific unusual songs found on this disc.
A wonderful member of my CXS collection..........2004-12-15
Once only available through www.cruxshadows.com, this CD has now been made available in most places where CXS is sold. I have owned it for quite some time now, and have never, ever gotten one bit tired of listening to it. Definitely a must for any CXS fan, or darkwave music fan at that.

Customer Reviews:
Lost Classics, Volume 1.......2003-01-11
I lucked out and discovered this CD series in the discount bin of a used CD store. Four volumes in total, they were each released in 1991, and feature lost nuggets from the Epic/Columbia vaults, from the `60s to the `70s.
Volume 1 focuses on the `70s, and it's my favorite of the bunch because it's so eclectic. There's a great mix of `70s rock ("Hallelujah"), funky, screaming soul ("Get It On"), groove-heavy gospel (the shoulda-been-a-huge-hit "Are You Ready"), and the gentle, "singer-songwriter" stuff that was so big in that decade ("Echo Park").
Not all of the groups on here are unheard of; the Looking Glass contributes the opening track (their biggest hit, "Brandy," is on volume 2), and we also get a few songs from the infamous Redbone. The Isley Brothers also show up, giving the best track on the whole album: the uncut, 5 minute version of "That Lady," which sounds like nothing heard in soul before or sense. Imagine Jimi Hendrix playing guitar over a more traditional soul/pop song, before exploding into a fuzzed-out frenzy.
Turns out the CDs can be bought new for about the same price I paid for them used! So don't hesitate: if you're looking for some good, forgotten rock, you can't go wrong with this series.
Strong compilation of hard to find classics.......1999-12-02
Sometimes, we can find a album to purchase in order to get one song. There are a handful of these songs on this one underpriced disc.
K.Barbour's "Echo Park" is a great song from my youth, and would be satisfied with this song alone. I am not 100% sure about all levels of its meaning, but I recall hearing it, and feeling sorry for older people. It still moves me to hear it after more than two decades.
"Are You Ready" by Pacific Gas & Electric just makes one move to a great backbeat. Argent, Chi Coltraine and Sly help round out one of the best values Amazon has to offer!
Great fusion rock you thought you forgot, classics you miss.......1999-05-18
Bam! The third cut GET IT ON by Chase blasts off from the strasophere sounding very much like Blood, Sweat & Tears on speed. Then it's on to ARE YOU READY, a gospel/rock song along the lines of SPIRIT IN THE SKY. MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY continues in the horn backed guitar genre, while the clever WITCH QUEEN OF NEW ORLEANS by Redbone, those wild guys who dressed Native American garb, bring a cosmic coda to this "album." Other songs include the classic HOLD YOUR HEAD UP by Argent, and you get the full length version of WHO'S THAT LADY by the Isley Bros. The CD gets 5 stars not only for it's quality but for including the above songs in one compilation. Crank this baby on the laser player and prepare to be blown away.
