This CD is a thoroughly enjoyable experience filled with the great big band dance music that made Welk's band such a success in the 50s and 60s. The arrangements are tasteful and professional, easy on the ear, and quite danceable. Some even swing, or bounce along with an infectious shuffle rhythm. Although none of Welk's hit singles from the 60s are present (something a thorough compilation from Ranwood Records needs to address as one is sadly lacking currently), the music is first rate and one that any fan of Lawrence Welk, big band music, or just 60s instrumental pop music in general should have in their collection.

Snuggle up close to your sweetie for dream-dancing to this "two-fer" CD. Sparkling arrangements turn each song into a new memory. 'I Hadn't Anyone Till You', 'Out Of Nowhere', and 'I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)' get my honey and I up off our seats, and out onto the instant dance floor of our living room, every time!
Even if you can only dream, as you nod your head to another time and another place, this CD is worth the price of admission. Buy it for your Grandparents, or your parents, and make sure you buy another copy for yourself!

Ray Anthony took the clarinet-octave-lead-over-the-saxes sound from Glenn Miller's civilian band, added strings like Major Miller did in his AAF band, and, with his arrangers (including Don Simpson), made it all more hi-fi and even sweeter for dancing pleasure. And it IS pleasure: sensual, indulgent, maybe even "escapist," but in perfectly disciplined STYLE...If the ending of "Embraceable You" (Track 18) doesn't strike you as the PRETTIEST combo of big-band woodwinds and soft brass,
run-don't-walk to the nearest audiologist.

Now sure, as a trumpet player, Ray Anthony wasn't Harry James (who else WAS for Godssakes?), but what he HAD he sure could USE...No, this isn't "jazz," it's scintillatingly-arranged commercial big-band-and-strings, with jazz inflection...But taken on its own terms this disc is an unabashed pleasure from start to finish.

DREAM DANCING is the more famous of the two LPs resurrected here, and it's a jewel.

Still, the earlier LP, DANCERS IN LOVE (1957 ? ), is one of those sweetly, pungently recorded Capitol albums of the late mono era: everything is perfectly focused, and if it's possible, "better than stereo."

If you can't recreate a big-band ballroom or install a revolving mirror-ball in your own abode, then at least have a few old friends over to your patio, porch or deck; serve some hors d'ouevres, light some lanterns, pop open some bubbly, and play tracks 1 thru 12...By the time "Blue Champagne" is over, you'll think you see Marilyn, in that green & white-print summer dress she wore in SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, smiling at you from the edge of the patio..."Sure, why not, you silly old thing."

    Having only heard "Skin Deep" and thinking how good a song it was, iwas left hoping that the rest of the songs on the album didn't let it down, which they didn't. Amazing from start to finish with a great balance of melody, grit and and everything else you could hope for in a truely amazing punk record.

    a nice surprise! a great punk pop cd that doesn't sound juvenile or silly. just great beefy guitars and gruffy vocals with some ultra catchy hooks. i bought this cd when it first came out based solely on the ridiculous name and goofy cover and it bowled me over with it's greatness. i like the space ray gun art on the back cover, too!

    This album, only eight songs long, is great. It has elements of punk, metal, and various other forms of hard and fast rock and roll. The melodies are catchy, often poplike, while at other times being really hard and grinding.

    I just love the driving guitar riffs on this album, especially on "Help" and "Skin Deep." The last song on the album, "Raise your Glass" finishes on a high note, and is perhaps the best tune on the disc. "Raise your Glass" is also probably the song that most resembles the sound of singer Duncan's past and present band, Snuff.

    I recommend this album as well as those of Snuff.

      Album Description

      TURKU's third full-length CD, Ozlem, evolved over a period of four years, following the release of "Nomads of the Silk Road" in 2000. The title track, Ozlem, was concieved by Ted Monnich at an annual Pennsylvania festival, Pennsic 29. Ted and Farzad composed its passionate arrangement, in a Tashkent hotel, while on tour in Uzbekistan in 2001, only a week before the World Trade Center disaster.

      In the following years TURKU worked through the album's songs and arrangements while touring across North America. The resulting collection of songs is rememiscent of "Alley of Istanbul's," their first album, energy. Ozlem is heavy on Turkish melodies that speak to and inspire the soul. The word "Ozlem" in Turkish means "longing." The intensity and emotions of this album shine forth through its songs, eliciting a miriad of emotional responses from the listener. One thing is certain with TURKU, however. When they play, no one can ever sit still.

      Last December at the Holiday Classic in San Francisco, a great workshop with exciting choriography and instruction, I used this CD.

      During the open practice time that evening, people brought in their own CD's to play. But they were all junk. I am sure you have all been to dances and practices where the music sagged and wained. My friend complained about the music being played. Some dancers left after a couple of songs.

      I happened to have this CD in my automobile (not really - I planned to use this CD on my portable CD player for my own practices). The music on this CD put some zing back into the practice.

      The John Skinner Band's Second Complete Ballroom Dance offers a variety of music suitable for experienced as well as new students of ballroom dance. This is their second recording of ballroom music. As with their first recording, the tempo and length of the selections are geared specifically for dancing. This is what makes it an excellent choice for finding just the right song for practice. This recording offers several swing numbers which are currently popular. The assortment provides enough variety to keep dancing without having to change cds. The two cds combined will provide an evening of music for a practice or party. If you can't have the pleasure of dancing to the Skinner Band in person, then this is the next best thing.

      If you were born before 1950, you will like this CD. I bought it because I have long admired Andre Kostelanetz. He was accomplished in leading both popular and classical orchestras. The recordings on this CD are monaural and were recorded in the late 30's to mid 40's. I don't think Tiger Rag, Bugle Call Rag and Turkey in the Straw complement the other selections. The remainder, however, are lush and romantic.
