5 out of 5 stars Great CD I imagine.......2007-03-01

Hi, my name is Jayson, and I am 13 and a half years old. I was over at my friend Brian's house, and his sister was listening to this CD. She is cool but she is a private person. She didn't like us practicing karate, so she turned up her stereo, and my friend Brian and I ended up practicing karate to the CD. I think everyone should own this CD, and I would like to get a copy for my birthday. 5 stars.

Album Description

The Flaming Lips, bona-fide platinum status artists, are the latest in a long line of acclaimed talents to share their music collection with fans on Azuli's celebrated CD series LateNightTales. Compiled by the trio, LateNightTales is the perfect representation of what The Lips listen to, kicking back at home in Oklahoma City.

The Flaming Lips' infamous version of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" (which has been eagerly sought after across the worldwide web since the group performed it live at the Hammersmith Apollo late last year) is featured as an exclusive on this compilation. Playfully dubbed, "Harry Potter's and George W. Bush's Severed Head Arm Mix," the wacky rendition takes sideswipes at anyone in range with febrile Lips-ian logic!

Also featuring songs by Bjork, Miles Davis, Radiohead, 10cc, Nick Drake, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, The Chemical Brothers, and many more - The Flaming Lips puts their spin on LateNightTales.

5 out of 5 stars Light Shines Through A Kaleidoscope.......2007-04-16

One of the most inspired series ever offered on CD, 'Late Night Tales' offers an intimate look into the personal home listening tastes of each of the artists spotlighted in the series. The best description of the series is by it's creator AUSTIN WILDE who states on their website latenighttales.co.uk; "Our special series gives artists and producers the opportunity to select their favorite tracks for home listening. The series is an ideal opportunity for the artists to express their tastes and musical background and to take the listener on a journey through their musical inspirations. Normally we ask our chosen producers to compile an album of their favorite music that inspired them to make music their profession - their favourite of the favourites.Sit back relax and enjoy.". I personally share this vision, for years I have asked club dj's to make a mix of the best music that they can't get away with playing at dance clubs (you can e-mail me at nickfromspace@yahoo.com if you want to hear some of those).

The spotlight here shines on WAYNE COYNE of THE FLAMING LIPS. As in the FLAMING LIPS own music, that light shines through a kaleidoscope. Showing off music of all times from todays ALFIE, SEBADOH, MICE PARADE,
CHRIS BELL, NICK DRAKE & DAVID SHRIGLEY; to 90s defining RADIOHEAD, BJORK, APHEX TWIN, FAUST & CHEMICAL BROTHERS; to 80s ingenues PSYCHEDELIC FURS, LOVE AND ROCKETS, THE CHAMELEONS & LUSH; to 70s innovators ROXY MUSIC, BRIAN ENO, & 10CC; the timeless jazz of MILES DAVIS; and a features an exclusive new track by FLAMING LIPS in which they cover WHITE STRIPES 'Seven Nation Army'; this is truely a renaissance man expierence.

A personal description as to the inspiration and reason for the selection of each track is offered in the liner notes. I only wonder if WAYNE was the one who selected the picture of the plastic elephant for the cover of the CD & how much wonderful it would look on LP.

3 out of 5 stars Up and down, could use a little editing.........2006-02-12

Others have described the CD fairly well. No point in adding my blather to theirs. I'll leave it at this: this is a good CD, but not great; it needs some editing. Delete tracks 12-16 and you have a much more concise, cohesive offering.

I don't how who Alfie are (is?) but their song "People" is a definite highlight. Linear, tight, multipart interwoven guitar rock: picture the Strokes with twice the IQ.

5 out of 5 stars The Key.......2005-12-22

The real beauty of this compilation is the liner notes. Don't get me wrong, the compilation is brilliant and the music is wonderful, but the key to the whole thing is the notes Wayne scribbled about why he chose each song.

Listening to this without reading the notes is a bit like wandering lost around an art museum, enjoying the paintings. It is a great way to spend your time. On the other hand, you could be led by an expert who can explain the finer points, the history, the reason the art is in this collection to begin with. You get all the aesthetic pleasure, plus enlightenment.

Wayne is your personal docent.

He points out reasons for collecting these songs; a beautiful innovation here, a pathetically heart wrenching lyric there, a sublime use of an odd time signature, this band had to be in the collection and this is a good representation of why, on and on.

3 out of 5 stars Spears and Awkward Hobos: secret review #4.......2005-10-03

We didnt even know it was a song, a dvd, something to play in machines, the gears and plastic all remotely influenced, such oblong buttons. I was a cushion for such waves, a shore for baked items, so good and needed, such sales for the building fund. They are from Oklahoma City and I miss May avenue, the aged houses of heritage hills and somewhere off 15th street, amongst gargoyles and other creatures they made these songs.

All angry and up to the slide they go, they go.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Downtempo Mix.......2005-07-15

The Flaming Lips are always musically adventurous and experimental, so I knew they'd have to have some cool influences. This album is a sweet mellow mix kicked off with Bjork's "Unravel" (probably the best song from "Homogenic"), seguing into some Miles Davis (not my favorite by him, but continues the mellow mood), later getting into some music box funk by Aphex Twin and Chemical Brothers. Near the end we get Radiohead's "Pyramid Song"-- I've never been a huge fan, but this song is by leaps and bounds the best I've heard from them, Thom Yorke distilled down to somber wailing poetry and a simple, eerie piano riff underneath. A definite highlight. Right after that, we get the easy listening song "I'm Not in Love," whose inclusion here makes me see the song in a new light, especially in this extended and uncut version.

You know the Lips know their music, and this mix tape doesn't disappoint. It manages to be downtempo and always interesting at the same time.

    Album Description

Belle & Sebastian are the latest in a long line of acclaimed artists to share their music collection with fans on Azuli's celebrated CD series LateNightTales. Compiled by the group, LateNightTales is the perfect representation of their eclectic tastes and musical influences.

Belle & Sebastian's take on LateNightTales is fresh, varied and effortlessly hip. Never tied to any scene in the first place (and still further out on a limb 10 years later), these Glaswegians seem to have developed as a band that can draw influences from just about anywhere. Pure pop, `60s psyche, `70s rock, West Coast harmonies, beat groups, folk balladeering, punk, indie, girl groups and bossanova, are just a few of the slants to crop up without musical contradictions within the Belles' own work.

The comp features an exclusive cover of Belle & Sebastian doing "Cassaco Marron" originally by the Latin group Trio Esperanca, which formed back in 1958 - further illustrating the group's eclectic and wide range of taste in music. Also includes songs by Paperclip People, RJD2, Stereolab, The Peddlers, Johnny Cash, The Ethiopians, Walter Jackson, Gal Costa, Ramsey Lewis, Steve Miller Band, Mum, and more, as well as an exclusive spoken word track by David Shrigley.

    5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Mix.......2005-11-25

This complete compilation of changing beats can defiantly create temperamental grooves on a late night. It's a must have!

    5 out of 5 stars I I I your FUNK & SOUL is delivered here!!!!.......2003-12-03

I'm a huge fan of D.J. Ease & his N.O.W. creation. The guy has mad skills. I cant say one bad thing about the music he produces yet I'm always skeptical when it comes time to a mix disk. Those that bought the European edition on the last N.O.W. release received the bonus mix disk which was just average until now. This "Late Night Tales" is nonstop funkiness ranging from jazz, lounge, dub, soul, to hip hop. These are my key favorites:

    4. Show Me Some Love - The Rootsman (nice track also check out The Rootsman on the new BUG disk, amazing)

    6. Listen - Quincy Jones (Quincy is the man, enough said)

    8. Sneakin In The Back - Tom Scott (this track breathes JAZZ, its on my answering machine right now)

    13. Spooky - Dusty Springfield(what a sweet classic to use, EASE must of been thinking about Viscous Pink on this one)

A must have for your collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Great!, that's all I have to say........2003-11-23

This CD is amazing! the mix between new tracks and old ones is unique and... just try it!

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Good.......2003-09-14

This is a really choice selection of tracks. It is blissfull as it seamlessly transitions from on great track to the next. All tastey flavors of music make the cut. It is really a journey through sonic masterpieces. I highly recommend it. I was a bit cautious about this after having enjoyed the earlier Nightmares On Wax releases but not really getting into the DJ Kicks release. This disc picks up and pushes the standards even higher. I only have this Another Late Night release as well as Fila Brazilia, which is a favorite of mine that i still enjoy listening to after having bought it when it was first released about three years ago, so if you dont have that one you might want to get it as well. Get this disc and get ready to enjoy.

Evelyn's latest release and contribution to the "...Late Night" compilation is quickly making it up to my 'Best of' list for this series.

5 out of 5 stars So hard to find in stores, but the Best ANOTHERLATENIGHT compilation........2006-08-18

This is my favorite CD. I bought it in france about 4 or 5 yrs ago and accidently misplaced it. I then couldn't find it in any stores and even Itunes didn't have it. :(
Thanks to Amazon for shipping me the best electro Trip-hop any has ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Urban Sound.......2006-04-27

I couldn't disagree more with the review below. The title reads literally. This is another late night and the dudes put together this incredible collection of modern music, unlike anything I've heard. I would never ever in 1000 years compare Zero7 with Snow Patrol, who is also a favorite band of mine. I would not label the middle part as "triphop" . It's URBAN music, ANOTHER LATE NIGHT. I love it.

    2 out of 5 stars Mixed mixes.......2005-10-04

Zero 7 has mixed results in their "favorites" compulation, a part of the "Another Late Night" series. Compiled here are several excellent trip-hop tunes, and several similarly good hip-hop tunes. Unfortunately, the two are mashed together in a none-too-pleasant manner.

It starts off on a suitably mellow note with Yesterday's New Quintet, and all seems to be going well for a short time. Then the Quasimoto "Real Eyes" comes in. Don't get me wrong -- it's a wonderful song, and an excellent musical choice. But placed directly after the laid-back trippiness of Quintet's "Sunrays," it comes across as surreally harsh.

After that comes a stretch of more gritty hip-hop, followed by some tripped-out jazz and mellow Joy Zippers, and... more hip-hop, sprinkled with electronica here and there. It ends on a softer note with a trippy cover by the Stylistics, and a song by Zero 7 themselves.

Unlike bands like Snow Patrol and the Flaming Lips, don't expect Zero 7's mix CD to be full of music that shaped their sound. Because there's very little resemblance between, say, Quasimoto and Zero 7's sounds. Both are enjoyable, but there's literally no resemblance at all.

But the problem with Zero 7's "Another Late Night" is not so much the songs selected, but the way they are presented. It seems like Zero 7 simply chose a bunch of songs they liked, and tossed them onto a CD willy-nilly. As a result, they lurch from one musical style to another, and none of the songs flatter one another.

Had the assorted songs been rearranged, Zero 7's entry in the "Another Late Night" series could have been excellent listening. As it is, it's an uncomfortable tangle of different musical styles.

    4 out of 5 stars Misunderstood.......2006-10-07

I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers, who said that the first people who reviewed this album didn't seem to appreciate what went into it. Few DJs can put together such a diverse collection of electronic music--techno, house, trance, dance, ambient--and pull it off as well as FC Kahuna.

The blending of tracks here is really good. As someone else already mentioned, Kahuna's ability to make the songs blend so smoothly is truly something to be appreciated--especially from those of us who have worked as DJs and know what a tricky art this is.

The album's strength, however, might also be its fault in the minds of some. Moving across so many different styles might not be the type of sound everyone is looking for in an electronic album. Still, I believe credit should be given where credit is due. It's not perfect, but I think it was an ambitious and stellar effort just the same.

FC Kahuna has done a masterful job of putting songs together for any late night party occasion!!! Hell, you try DJing a party and making all the songs flow without dead silence! FC Kahuna mixes without you even being aware that a track has changed! Just think, this could be another dance mix CD full of material you've heard a million times before--and do we really need another one of those??? HELL, NO!!!!

4 out of 5 stars BANG UP JOB.......2005-05-31

This album isn't for everyone. I didn't like it when i first heard it, and i put it on the shelf, but after giving it a listen a few times it grew on me, and i'd say it's one of my favorites now. Only if they could keep this series going. I'd love to see the Chem bros do ANOTHER FINE MESS! over all its a wacky album especailly sea shells what a wacky track!! but Blurs 'Music is my radar' top's it all. FINE WORK FC KAHUNA, check out MACHINE SAYS YES if you like this

    4 out of 5 stars Oh..........2004-07-16

I don't think the other reviews are accurate in the sense that they all knock this as not being a FC Kahuna album...but one look @ the tracklisting and you can see it's not.

This cd is a collection of late night dance songs compiled by the memebers of FC Kahuna. I'll agree that it's not for everyone, but for the most part I love it. From the opening Jolly Music track "K-Fun" to the awesome closing song by The Polyphonic Spree I don't think this cd dissapoints @ all...

    I love it...in fact if I could have it's children I would...

    ...oh.

2 out of 5 stars take it for what it is.......2004-02-15

this is just a compilation album put together by fc kahuna. kinda sorta alright if you like this kind of music and are interested in hearing their influences/peers. personally, i don't usually like this kind of music and fc kahuna is just an exception, so, this is album is pretty, you know, meh...

    Album Details

Four Tet (Aka Kieran Hebden) is Responsible for Some of the Most Cutting Edge Electronic Music of the Past - Or Indeed Any - Year. This Contribution to Azuli's 'late Night Tales' Series Finds Him Taking in the Far-flung Reaches of his Expansive Musical Vocabulary and Unveils Many of the Influences Behind his 'pause' and 'rounds' Albums. It Pits Warm Psychedelia Against Cool Jazz Against Free Floating Folk Against Hardcore Hip Hop Against Straight Up Experimental Lunacy and Emerges with a Cohesive Game-plan… after a Fashion. Uniting These Seemingly Disparate Choices is Kieran's Fascination with the Microscopic Detail of the Music (Something which Informs the Be-jewelled Surfaces of his Own Records).

if you have been listening closely to four tet (and fridge) and love each track's carefully crafted aggregate of samplings (or whatever), use of texture and the warmth of it all, this comp is exactly what i'd expect to hear from KH and also what i'd *want* to hear -- it's like digging through his collection and realizing you haven't been listening to a diverse enough selection of music as you thought you had. but here he is, paring it down and leading you straight to the good stuff. his selection is not full of electronicy tracks (kind of a relief) as one might expect, but each one has a clearly defined beat or dope-ass instrumentation. i almost fell over when i heard parallelograms. sooo good.

he picks it proper: this comp is a perfect combination of post-rock, jazz-tinged hip hop, hippie rock, experimental, free jazz (?), psychadelic folk, etc. it all makes sense together. the tie that binds is his love for shimmery and twinkly (or glitchy) sounds, however they have been manifested in past decades.

ps/ i love the premise of late night tales, another late night, back to mine and dj kicks comps. there's lots of not so great ones, but now and again, you come across one that is dy-no-mite (such as the orb's back to mine and erlend oye's dj kicks).

        1 out of 5 stars Rip Off.......2005-10-02

Forget about the quality of music on this disc. It's supposed to have a "Bonus Track" consisting of a Sly and Robbie cover of a Madonna tune, but listeners are not instructed where it is on the CD or how to get at it. I know it's there, because when the disc cues up my player says "75:30" and as soon as I hit play and the first track starts, the time remaining drops to "71:25." I suspect that in order to get to it, you have to have a cheap CD player and get it to rewind "behind" track 1. High end CD players will not do this, ever. So between copy protected CD's that won't even play at all on my player, other disc's with "secret" tracks like this one, Lamb's "What Sound" and Hybrid's "Sci-fi Mornings" I'm ready to say the hell with it and stop buying music. It's a matter of principle: this goes back for a refund and I can't recommend that anyone spend a penny on it.

        5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-10-24

Question - where is the secret bonus track no. 18? It is so secret on my cd I think, that it may remain so unless someone tells me what to do to listen to it.

The CD is exceptional listening and I give it 5 stars without hesitation (and without the bonus track if necessary!).
