What a Voice!!!!!!!.......2007-01-11
I bought this DVD because I lost my original of Baby the Rain Must Fall - and love Glenn - decided my life was much the poorer without this album. The It's Gonna Be Fine part of the DVD doesn't do too much for me, a surprise (which is cool, since the price is not excessive) - I have rarely heard Glenn and not adored his music, it's listen to-able, but not as good as his other albums (nor do I have an appreciation for the one he did with his daughter, sigh). But, I have loved his style, voice, arrangements, all of it, since I was introduced to him as a young adult. I listen to him over and over and never tire of it.
Glenn Yarbrough.......2007-01-10
The CD was and is great. Keep listening to it all the time during my working-in-the-garage hours.
Too close to my heart........2005-12-21
I listened to Glenn Yarbrough's music during my 20s and 30s. I loved his music then and I love it now, for his powerful, unique, haunting voice moves me more than any other singer I have ever heard. So much emotion, so close. He truly is a remarkable artist. Sail on, sweet man.
Unique I Think.......2004-11-05
I'm not an expert on this artist; I remember his work in folk music and the amazing nobody-can-do-it-better "Baby, the Rain Must Fall". But I sat transfixed by him when he appeared at the State Fair, not a false note. The crowd loved him. This is a singer who never had to produce hit singles, just any tune will do once you get into his music. And apparently he never worried about hits as such, as he would make some money and go sailing about the world for the longest time and be welcomed back whenever he decided to return. If you're not hung up on chart toppers, this is a great listenable album for those who like someone who knows how to sing and has the voice to back it up.
What a voice!.......2004-08-14
I grew up listening to these albums with my parents, and Glenn's voice always brings me back to a simpler time. His smooth and powerful voice has to be appreciated by anyone who truely appreciates good music...regardless of your age. You don't here voices like Glenn's anymore.

not soon enough!.......2007-01-10
Disappointed in the content; wasn't fully sure what to expect but I would have liked more singing and less attempt at noxious comedy. Not really even funny come to think about it, noxious or otherwise. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't.
really funny cd.......2006-07-12
when i got this i knew who joe rogan was but didnt know how funny he could be and trust me you are going to laugh when you listen to his cd. hes vulgar which at times is funny but is over used at times too. the funniest tracks are the 1st one, the tigers f******, anna nicole smith, and #6. highly recommended if you are in need of a great laugh.
Not "just for men" ..........2006-06-15
I actually purchased this cd and his "Belly of the Beast" DVD a few years ago. But I just re-listened to all of it again because I needed a hearty laugh. This does the trick every time!
I wanted to add my two cents here because I don't think his humor can solely be enjoyed by men. I'm a woman and I think he's hilarious. Yeah, he's crass and vulgar--so what? That's exactly what makes him so good. He's real. I think the best comedians are those with the ability to turn their insides out and give us the rawest, most eye-opening picture of who they are and how they see the world. Done and done.
And even if you don't believe everything he believes, you'd be remiss not to realize that he's a clearly a smart cookie. He's not just throwing out BS on topics he knows nothing about. If nothing else, you've got to respect that. Not to mention his obvious talent in the delivery of his jokes--can't wait until I can see his act in person.
The bottomline is that if you don't laugh, maybe it's time to check for your pulse.
Fear is Not a Factor, but Funny is........2006-03-15
Most people know Joe ROgan from Fear Factor, and this CD is a very different Joe Rogan if that is the only thing you know about him. The humor is Raw and Uncensored but very funny all the same. This CD is a 45 minute "Dick Joke" but it's great! Joe Rogan puts forth a VERY solid effort on this CD and it was worth the purchase.
Pretty Good! It's like Stanhope at 60%.......2006-02-17
Sorry Joe but your buddy Doug's got you beat in stand up. I really do like this album though. I thought it was going to be some middle of the road bs. Very happy with how dirty it was. I'd buy another album if he put it out.

Stop the World I Want to Get Off, Broadway cast.......2005-09-04
If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.
Dottie Conlon
a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27
STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.
Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.
Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.
A top cast album.
Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13
This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".
NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.
YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.
THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.
Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25
To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

Applause for Applause!.......2006-07-13
I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!
Lauren Bacall !.......2005-07-09
Based on the classic movie "All About Eve", Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her performance in this great musical.
Best tracks include:
But Alive
Applause [Bonnie Franklin of "One Day At A Time" fame!]
Something Greater
Not all the songs are great, but totally worth the buy!
Love it.......2004-04-01
Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.
Welcome CD edition of the original Broadway cast album.......2004-01-17
First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."
WRONG!!!!
"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.
Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!
************
Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.
Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.
Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.
The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.
lauren.......2003-12-04
i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

Great for John Denver Fans!.......2007-01-04
Being a long standing JD fan I was looking to replace my lp "Beginnings with the Mitchell Trio" from 1974 with a CD. Unfortunately that lp is unavailable as a CD but luckily all but 2 of the songs (Like to Deal With the Ladies and She Loves You) are on this CD! Although I normally prefer hearing John singing solo, which he does on Bells Of Rhymney (this version I think is better than Pete Seeger's), the harmonies of the Mitchell Trio are excellent especially on For Bobbi (For Baby)! This CD is a must for those JD fans wanting to hear John's early work.
John Denver Fans Might Want To Check This One.......2006-07-27
These two albums were released in 1966 as the Mitchell Trio reflecting the replacement of Chad Mitchell by John Denver. The songs on the albums are a good mixture of the humor, social satire, political commentary and ballads that characterized the group and pleased their fans. If you're a MT fan, you already know these albums from their original vinyl releases on the Mercury label, and you won't be disappointed.
Not a MT fan? These albums provide a glimpse of contemporary folk music, and one of its more popular groups, toward the end of that era, but I'd suggest trying a CMT/MT compliation first: either the The CMT Collection (Kapp Releases) or The Best of the CMT: The Mercury Years, both available on CD. If you get hooked, most of the CMT/MT discography is also available on CD.
If you're a John Denver fan, you might want to pick-up this two album CD. It contains two great solos by John of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Idries Davies/Pete Seeger's "Bells of Rhymney." It also contains the MT performing "For Bobbi," the first recorded song written by John Denver. All three cuts are excellent.
We can thank Collector's Choice for once again providing a two album CD of one of the better contemporary folk groups of the 1960s.

This 26-cut compilation rounds up virtually everything ever recorded by the Left Banke, the awesomely talented pop band best known for the classically-influenced 1966 hits "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina." Songwriter/pianist/guiding light Michael Brown composed some of the loveliest melodies of the era, which were typically fleshed out with complex contrapuntal harmonies and string arrangements; "Barterers and Their Wives" sounds almost medieval, while the soaring "Desiree" is positively majestic in its epic sweep. Brown left before the recording of the band's second album, which means that the quality level dips slightly near the end of the disc. Despite this, any '60s pop collection is woefully incomplete without it. --Dan Epstein

Much Ado About Little.......2007-07-10
I am stunned by the ridiculous prices being sought for this "Anthology." This set contains two and a half hits and a couple of solid B-sides - the rest sounds like every demo tape they ever made, all of which were quite reasonably rejected on the basis of poor songwriting, poor production, overuse of the harpsichord and string quartet, take your pick.
Well, a fool and their money. . .
An ravishing & essential collection.......2007-06-02
If you're not sure about that title claim, just note the previous reviews & the outrageous prices being asked for this out-of-print treasure. Yes, the big hit is here, sounding just as gorgeously yearning as ever ... but there's much more to the Left Banke than "Walk Away Renee." While the first half of this collection is unquestionably the cream, with jewels like "Pretty Ballerina" & "She May Call You Up Tonight," there's plenty to recommend in the rest of it as well. Songs like "Desiree," "Shadows Breaking Over My Head," & "There's Gonna Be A Storm" are every bit as passionate & beautiful, with the added treat of being relatively unknown & fresher-sounding. The baroque niche in popular music was a small & short-lived one, but its influence extends to this day. And there are no better exemplars of its unique sound than the Left Banke. This collection is desperately in need of being made available once more! Meanwhile, if you stumble across a used copy somewhere, snap it up as quickly as you can. You won't regret it!
A Quality CD From A Great Band.......2007-03-10
The Left Banke are known primarily for two songs: "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" but their discography offers so much more. Unlike alot of other pop groups of the mid/late 60's era, their albums were of high caliber and not full of filler or cover tunes.
The Left Banke's first album, Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina is definitely their best. Lead singer Steve Martin-Caro's voice and Michael Brown's songwriting and harpiscord playing, along with the background harmonies of Tom Finn and George Cameron are just magical. The only song that sounds a bit odd is the country sounding "What Do You Know."
The second album, Left Banke Too has some great songs like "Desiree" and "There's Gonna Be A Storm." This album also features George Cameron and Tom Finn sharing leads on some of the songs. Tom Finn has a great voice and in my opinion should have done a solo LP.
There are a few tracks I feel do not belong on this CD. There were three songs recorded under The Left Banke name that feature Bert Sommer on lead vocals. These songs include "Men Are Building Sand," "And Suddenly," and the Tom Fair composition, "Ivy, Ivy." The only real Left Banke member on these songs is Michael Brown. Some fans do like having these songs in their collection though, dispite them not having core members Martin-Caro/Finn/Cameron on them.
There are also two tracks which are only Steve Martin-Caro and Michael Brown. These tracks are the lovely "Myrah" and it's flip side, "Pedestal."
In all, this is a great collection. I don't know anyone who was ever disappointed by it. The CD is now OOP and goes anywhere from $40 to $100 on eBay and other sites. I hope in the future, someone will be smart enough to make a proper Left Banke collection including all three albums and unreleased tracks. Polygram/Mercury was foolish to stop the production of this great CD.
I'll Go Along With That!.......2006-11-01
I've been reading all the comments here, and I agree whole-heartedly! I've owned this disc now for about 12 years and it still holds up musically.
I must say that the only positive statements I've personally encountered concerning this collection have been here at Amazon. I have a friend in Connecticut who hates this collection. I have a brother-in-law who described it in one word: "Depressing." Bunk! These are great songs! Well written; well executed; and for the most part, well produced! Thank goodness I've always trusted my own ears. The other comments are pretty accurate with their discriptions and comparisons. Read the comments, and if what they say is agreeable to you, then this disc probably will be too. But, as stated in earlier reviews, this disc is out of print, which means paying through the nose if you want it.
long overdue.......2006-08-26
for goodness sake, there needs to be another reissue of the left banke's material. the reviews don't lie, it is THAT good! on par with anything of the day by the beatles, the kinks, the zombies etc. 75 bucks is far too much for any cd in my opinion, but this music needs to be readily available. please, a rerelease sometime soon!

Even within the pop landscape of today's mainstream country, Deana Carter's follow-up to her blockbuster Capitol debut surprises. Carter and co-producer Chris Farren demonstrate an uncanny instinct for hits: These 13 songs--five of which were co-written by Carter---tour through Top 40s of many decades and genres. The musical and lyrical variety--rather than Carter's singing, which is breezy, not bold--is her strong suit. "You Still Shake Me" marries ZZ Top and raunchy Hank Jr., while "Never Comin' Down" has a sly, soul groove and wah-wah guitar that sounds like Bobbie Gentry swinging to Sheryl Crow. "Absence of the Heart" has flashes of Crystal Gayle at her torchiest, while "Angels Working Overtime," Carter's best vocal performance, has hip-hop style percussion, big, Mellancamp-esque acoustic guitars, and the bubbly, laughing voices of children--and somehow the pop dazzle doesn't swamp the intense narrative. Carter isn't making country music, but her confections can be delightful, even ambitious, pop stuff. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
It really is alright!.......2007-04-05
This is a good CD that is enjoyable to listen to. The songs are interesting. I love the remake of Melanie's hit, "Brand new key".
A fascinating album though not Deana's best.......2005-07-19
Deana's career has certainly had some ups and downs. She began with an album (Did I shave my legs for this) that her American record label refused to release - but, somewhat surprisingly, managed to get a UK release. Deana continued searching for songs while writing some of her own. Eventually, she got an American release with an album also titled Did I shave my legs for this, but it was a very different album from the earlier UK release, with only the title track and two others appearing on both. The American album included Strawberry wine, a song that the record label reluctantly released as a single. It became popular among country fans, who proceeded in their millions to buy the album, whose sales were further helped by other hits such as We danced anyway. After such a phenomenally successful album, Deana's future suddenly seemed bright. Then the follow-up album (this one) appeared. Airplay and sales were disappointing and the record label dropped Deana. So is this album so bad? No - it sold a fair number of copies by normal standards but nowhere near what everybody hoped for.
The problem (if there is one) is that Deana didn't want to stick to a formula, preferring to do something a little different. Of course, it's one thing for an established star to change style from one album to another - it's quite another for somebody to do so with just two albums to her name and only one that most people knew about. In general, the songs here are less instantly appealing than those on Deana's previous albums, but they grow with repeated listening. Among the songs is a cover of Brand new key, the seventies classic written and originally recorded in 1971 by Melanie. With the singles from the album not doing as well as hoped, it may be the most recognizable song on the album.
Apart from Brand new key, all the songs are originals except the title track, which Deana's father wrote in 1971. The opening track (You still shake me) is slightly quirky (like several songs here) but I love it -it's about how Deana feels about a former lover. She doesn't want him back but she clearly has a soft spot for him. The next song (Ruby Brown) is about a woman who has vanished. The next song (Absence of the heart) is about a relationship that's gone cold. After that and Brand new sky comes a very romantic song (Michelangelo sky).
Next is another song (People miss planes) with an inconclusive ending, just like Ruby Brown. In this song, a woman decides she's had enough of her man and heads for the airport. She gets there but does she board that plane or turn back? You can decide for yourself how it ended. Next is a song (Never coming down) about a woman waiting for - and finding - true love. Then comes a song (Make up your mind) about a woman's impatience with a man. Maybe she gets the answer she wants, for the next song (Color everywhere) is really happy. Next is a song (Angels working overtime) about a baby who is dumped by her mother who feels unable to look after her.
Next is a song (Dickson county) about a woman wanting revenge. The next song (The train song) has strange lyrics but features vocal backing by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track closes the album in a reassuring manner.
This may not be as good as Deana's earlier albums, even after allowing for the need to let it grow through repeat plays, but it has a fascination all of its own.
Better than the debut but less commercial.......2005-05-19
It's obvious why this wasn't as big a hit as her debut "Did I Shave My Legs for This?": Carter isn't sticking as closely to the Nashville formula and radio wasn't as quick to embrace it. That's too bad because while the heights on this one might not be as big as "Strawberry Wine" from the first disc, it's a better listen as a whole.
On this one, Carter stretches her stylistic legs and allows plenty of influences in: a bit of funk wah-wah guitar ("Never Comin' Down"), hip-hop drums ("Angels Working Overtime"), 70s pop (her countrified cover of Melanie's "Brand New Key"), even latter day Beatles (the "Penny Lane" horn break in "The Train Song").
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Absence of the Heart" details the embers of love turning to ash. ("We live together separately/We don't wanna fall apart/But every time we kiss, there's an emptiness/An absence of the heart.."). The bouncy bongo driven "Michelango Sky" finds Carter finding her soulmate in a man who sees the same shapes in clouds as she does. "People Miss Planes" was a natural single that was left unreleased. (Maybe they didn't want to release 2 ballads back to back?) The song is a showdown at the airport between a woman ready to leave and the man who's there to try and talk her out of it. (He said "People miss planes"/"It happens all the time"/"They cancel their plans, they change their minds") Carter's own "Dickson County" uses the same theme as Mindy McCreedy's "10,000 Angels"..hoping for the strength to keep an ex-flame away. The writing is good, but there's not a "big hook" to get it radio play.
LOWS:
"Never Comin' Down" is a great 'coulda been' single, but it just plain goes on too long. The false fade is pretty cool, but she could easily have trimmed a minute off this song and improved it. While I agree "Color Everywhere" would probably have been a successful single, it's fairly formulaic and uninteresting. Perfect forgettable radio fodder. The title track just plods along without gathering much interest. I'm not sure why she named the album after that one. (Maybe because "Absence of the Heart" is too easy a mark for nasty record critics?)
BOTTOM LINE:
It's fairly average modern country but Carter has a nice voice and she's making progress. Maybe next time out she can come up with some stronger material and a solid hit or two to get radio's attention back.
AS MANY HITS AS A LEANN GREATEST CD .......2005-05-06
or Shania for that matter. This is nothing less than a 5 star country album (to the pop side though not as much as Shania).
Listen to the clips-it is rare to find so little filler (how much do the dixie chicks utilize!) Enjoy!
A Solid Album.......2004-08-13
"Everything's Gonna Be Alright" was Deana Carter's second Capitol album and the Follow-up to her first, which featured her terrific single "Strawberry Wine".
Though there is no "new" Strawberry Wine on this album, it's still a very good with many strong tracks.
Matraca Berg who wrote "Strawberry Wine" ( with Gary Harrison ) contributes two songs to this album, both among this album's best tracks; especially "Ruby Brown"
Her version of Melanie's "Brand New Key" is also pretty charming; she gives the song a so completely different treatment from Melanie that it's almost like a new song.
The highlights me though are the thoughtful "People Miss Trains" and "Angels Working Overtime" - one of the most rocking tunes with a great rhythm and great vocals; a Sheryl Crow type song - when she's at her best.
"Make Up Your Mind" is another good song.
Though a few songs are probably a little lightweight, there is enough quality material to call this another solid album, showing that Deana Carter can handle different styles ( rock - pop . country ) with great conviction.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

Irresistible.......2005-07-29
From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.
This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).
In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.
"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26
Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.
After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.
Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.
By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.
Excellent!.......2003-04-08
This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.
