PJ Harvey does her best work naked. For all the tantalizing changes in direction over the past 15 years, it was the British songwriter's barebones disc, Rid of Me (and its raw companion piece, 4-Track Demos), that made the greatest impression. These recordings from the late John Peel's celebrated BBC Radio show see her returning time and again to her basic blues roots, offering delightfully bruised takes on both early classics like "Sheela-Na-Gig," from her first performance on the show, through "You Come Through," a track that was recorded at a tribute shortly after Peel's passing. Along the way, there are plenty of rarities, stylistic diversions, and traces of dark humor to make Harvey fans wish the package could have been twice as long. --Aidin Vaziri

interesting.......2007-05-26
PJ Harvey has been one of the most interesting musicians of the past 15 years. The records have been hit or miss. But there have always been great songs. John Peel was an early enthusiast. Remember when Polly Harvey came on the scene, we were recovering from heavy metal, rap, and rave, and just at the beginning of grunge. This is probably the greatest female music done after Patti Smith and The Pretenders. There are early bits like "Oh My Love" and "Victory" from 1991. Some stuff she did with John Parrish. Not a lot of hits here. A few cover songs. One by Willie Dixon. PJ Harvey has a lot of records out there. This is another one for the pile. More a tribute to John Peel than a showcase for rare tracks. Pretty good anyway.
Great addition for PJ fan........2007-01-09
While most of the songs on the disc are available on PJ's back catalog, this collection gives you a nice sample of live developement of her work. The standouts for me were the somewhat rare tracks like "Naked Cousin" and "That Was My Veil." Not to mention a really cool version of Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle." Most of these songs should be well known to devoted fans but for you newbies, it's a good selection of her art and poetry. Always great!
In All Her Glory.......2007-01-02
The waif with the mouth that roars, P.J. Harvey is both the thinking person's feminist, and a smash-mouth rock and roller. In my book, that makes her one of the most exhilarating performers on the planet.
This cd nicely recaps P.J.'s career, with tracks from her debut, "Dry"and most of her projects since then, with the exception of "To Bring You My Love" and "Is This Desire?". All songs were drawn from performances produced by John Peel for the BBC, which gives them a slightly different luster, and a rock solid punch.
P.J.'s songs can be described as little expressionist dramas writ large in black and white, and wonderful balancing acts of dynamics and minimalist sound. She sometimes combines huge shards of grunge rock with absurdist lyrics. Check out "Naked Cousin" , an off-the-wall ditty that paints a picture of a Bacchanalian madman running through the fields in abandon. Sounds weird? Well, it ROCKS like crazy. Her Rainer Ptacek cover, "Losing Ground" is another delight, matching switchblade edginess with Captain Beefheart dissonance. The best track from "Dance Hall at Louse Point"--"That Was My Veil" , is here, along with the prettiest song from "Stories From the City..."("Beautiful Feeling") . The album closes with "You Come Through" done beautifully and sincerely as a tribute to the late John Peel.
This cd is sure to please longtime P.J. fans, and it's a good sampler for the uninitiated.
Five stars.
From Then To Now........2006-11-16
Fantastic collection of songs from her back catalogue. You can get all the sessions through trawling the web, but this distills all the songs in a nice neat package. If you enjoy her, you'll enjoy this. A great tribute for PJ Harvey and John Peel.
Quite good.......2006-11-13
If you like PJ Harvey, this is quite an essential collection of sessions she did with the late John Peel between 1991 and 2004.The Cd is very simlpy packaged with a hand-written note by PJ Harvey on the inside that is quite nice as a tribute to the man Peel.Musically it is also quite exceptional. The spound quality is of course very good with that slightly rough quality that all these radio session records have. There is also that typical live-in the studio feel that has a little bit of everything to it and PJ Harvey' s style is quite suited to it.

Customer Reviews:
good EP.......2006-08-20
As others have noted, 2 of the 3 tracks are available elsewhere- Siva is on Gish, and Girl Named Sandoz is on Pisces Iscariot. Smiley is only available on this release (unless you can track down the Hut compilation "Year of the Spectacle"). However, since the whole CD is a "live studio" release recorded for the John Peel radio show, the version of Siva is different than the one on Gish (in some ways it's better than the Gish version), and can only be found on this disc. Not recommended for a first-time TSP buyer, but a definite must for any hardcore fan.
If you own Pisces Iscariot not worth it........2006-01-04
Even though this is a great EP it isn't worth the price unless you must own every CD the Pumpkins have put out. All these songs & more are on full length & comparitively less expensive albums like Pisces Iscariot & Gish. Unless you must have it the differences are small.
no, i'm not a kid, this is easier than logging in........2005-09-27
This is an outstanding 3-song ep comprising of the tracks the Smashing Pumpkins recorded for the John Peel radio show. Girl Named Sandoz was later added to the b-sides collection Pisces Iscariot, which is a must-by. But the real reason to buy this is the outstanding version of Siva and the otherwise unreleased Smiley. This version of Siva is rockin' and far eclipses the Gish version. It's tighter, heavier, and full of distortion. Billy's vocals are even a step up. So there you have it. If you are a dedicated Pumpkins fan, I highly suggest you get this. A superb addition to any Pumpkins collection.
smashing!.......2001-05-30
This is the tight set the Pumpkins played for John Peel's radio show. Awesome, plus you get "Smiley", unavailable anywhere else. Great song. If you find this anywhere, buy it. You won't be sorry, I promise.
Buy it for Smiley!.......1999-11-05
This CD will leave you wanting more, but for most Pumpkins fans who've already got Pisces and Gish, the only reason to buy it is Smiley - It's worth it. If you're not a hard-core Pumpkins fan and don't have Gish yet, buy Gish before this.

This is probably my favorite SLITS record.......2006-03-06
Most bands don't do much unique on Peel shows from what my ears have heard. Typically they're just recreating what they did in the studio for their records.
That's not the case w/ the SLITS. When I heard this record it took me places musically that the SLITS had never been before, certainly as a complete record.
The Cut first album is quite something. Course, that's assuming yer into the sound these gals made. It's not your usual stuff, punk or otherwise. Sure, they existed right in the fermament of the late 70's punk scene. But they carved out a musical place that is still only theirs.
This is an invaluable release because the SLITS released so few records. I'd recommend it in a heart beat, though I'd caution you to listen to those amazon 'listen' buttons first cuz this is not automatically going to be the group you just dig. We gotta find out if yer adventrous musically or not first. If you can get into their groove, man, they did some hot stuff and here's where they really get into it most. chrisbct@hotmail.com
UK JUNK.......2005-07-21
This may be perhaps the worst punk cd put out by a group of crazed women obsessed with the popularity of bands like the Sex Pistols, and the Clash. These chicks were amateurs when it came to playing their instruments, damn they even had to have Mick Jones from the Clash tune their instruments for them when they were on tour together. Sorry ladies just because you have the heart, and the enthusisam does not mean that the talent portion will fall in. This time you came up short. Instead try checking out X ray Spex, or the Avengers, or Patti Smiths first album Horses if your into the whole female empowerment punk rock group. POSEURS.
The Slits will always be better than YOU, sorry asshole.......2005-06-18
V. Dodson "london SS" a.k.a. arrogant/ignorant misogynist should be killed.
Slits.......2005-03-06
The Slits are one of the most underrated bands of all time, in ANY genre, as well as the most undeserving band to ever get dropped...I haven't heard this album yet, but as soon as i get some more moolah, i plan on purchasing this, i just bought Live at the Gibus and Generation X - GenX

Most complete Peel Sessions package.......2007-05-24
This is the most complete package I've seen for any band that had sessions with John Peel. Grab it while there are still copies available, even if you have all of the other TWP Peel Session CDs. The live stuff is a fantastic way to round out the 6-CD set.
I would never resent such a perfect Present........2007-04-03
I'm a huge fan of Peel Sessions. I have copies of Peel Sessions from everyone from The Smiths to Sonic Youth to The Field Mice to Motorcycle Boy. When I heard The Wedding Present was releasing their complete Peel Sessions recordings, I became ecstatic. Not only is some band putting out a comprehensive collection of their Peel Sessions, but it's a band I really like and already have one session of with the great John Peel, celebrating his 50th birthday on August 29, 1989.
This boxset is everything I expected from it. Great recordings that document an extensive history of a legendary band. Spanning over 95 tracks and 12 complete sessions, this is a must have for any fan of The Wedding Present and a perfect starting point for someone stumbling across this while searching for John Peel. Author Ken Garner provides great liner notes that will keep you entertained.
I only wish more bands would release their complete Peel Sessions much like The Wedding Present has.

Customer Reviews:
Thank you John........2006-11-29
I think this double album is not only worthy for Pulp fans, but for anyone who loves music. Its value isn`t just musical, it`s also a tribute for beloved John Peel. The inner notes tell us how Jarvis will be eternally grateful with John for introducing him to music he might as well have never got to hear if it weren`t for his amazing contribution to music culture not only in the UK, but worldwide. As for the sessions...well, what can i say, i will obviously get carried away for my immense love for Pulp and Mr.Cocker`s amazing writing skills. One of the most important singers and songwriters of all time, paying homage to one of the greatest music personalities of all time.
And thanks John, cause if it wasn`t for you, maybe Jarv wouldn`t have been in touch with all these huge amount of great music, and inspiration would`ve eventually faded away.
Thanks for everything.

Album Description
Two CDs featuring the '90s coolest Britpop band's infamous Peel Sessions. The stamp of approval from John Peel was always the kitemark of a great band, and Gene repeatedly rose to the honor, recording four sessions during the mid-to-late '90s that wonderfully capture their blossoming career. Disc One features their in-studio sessions, the first, laid down in December 1995, featuring stark early versions of tracks from their sophomore album Drawn To The Deep End. The second, in February 1998, previewed songs from their third album, Revelations. Disc Two's sessions were recorded during live shows. The first at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in January 1999, the second in August of the same year, in the Maida Vale studios on John Peel's birthday, Both sets are awash with the rough passion and tender compassion that infused Gene's entire canon; fitting testaments all to the 90's most elegant lost sons. Universal. 2006.

Album Details
Ducks Deluxe was One of the Very First of the So Called British `pub Rock' Bands of the Early 1970s. Along with their Contemporaries, Such as the Seminal "dr Feelgood", They were an Undoubted Influence on the English Punk Scene. This Compilation features Three Previously Unreleased BBC Sessions, all of which were Recorded for John Peel's Radio One Show. Includes Two Tracks which have Never Been Released Before. After the Group Disbanded, the Ex-ducks all Remained Active; Nick Garvey and Andy Mcmaster Formed the Motors, Martin Belmont Joined Graham Parker and the Rumour and Sean Tyla Formed the Tyla Gang. These Classic Archive Recordings, which Sound as Fresh and Exciting Today as They Did in the Pre-punk Era, Are Now Finally Released with the Full Agreement of the Band.

"Must Have" Item for Pub Rock Fans!.......2007-05-07
If you are fond of Pub Rock musicians such as Brinsley Schwarz, The Rumour and Chilli Willi and Red Hot Peppers, you had better purchase this CD. Liner notes by Martin Belmont, ex-Ducks Deluxe, are worthwhile reading.

Album Details
The Peel Sessions Are the Stuff of Legend. They Broke all the Rules and Engaged the Listener with Under-the -gun Mixes of Some of the World's Most Weird, Wonderful and Wired Bands. There was a Mythology to Peel Sessions: Musicians Went Into the Studio to Record their Three Or Four Track Session, Only to Emerge a Few Hours Later Blinking and Dazed, Having Made a Helluva Racket that Would Go Down in History as the Making of the Band.
