In my opinion this is the most solid disc of Lieder I have heard. The music and the performance are great. I would definitely go for this if your new to Lieder and want to get your feet wet. And maybe next you'll want to try Brahms' Deutche Volkslieder, which I think takes a little more effort to get into, but is great none the less.

Epitome of Lieder singing.......2006-07-26

It really amazed me to learn from the booklet that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was never totally confident in taking on the songs of Schubert, mostly due to the fact that a lot of them are simply based on poems with a man being the character. With her wonderful tone, fastidious attention to detail and the true German spirit, she would have been able to perform them much more extensively. Whatever the case, the 24 songs featured on this disc are a true delight from start to finish. The CD starts with the joyful atmosphere of the songs "Die Vogel" and "Liebhaber in allen Gestalten " which obviously were recorded very early on in Schwarzkopf's career, showcasing her in carefree, simple and amazingly fresh mood. Then comes the core of the CD-the classic recital with Edwin Fischer at the piano. Nothing really needs to be said here. Schwarzkopf shines throughout with beautiful tone, flawless diction. She may be mannered, yes, but she also does justice to the poetry like I never heard from anyone before, of course with the exception of Fischer-Dieskau. Edwin Fischer plays with taste, bringing out all the demanded atmosphere: from the serenity of Im Fruhling to the intensity of Die Junge Nonne. The sound is pretty old but the balance is perfect and both Schwarzkopf and Fischer are caught in a great day. The other items on the disc are recorded later on in Schwarzkopf's career, when her tone has darkened, thinned down a bit but always radiant and the fastidiousness and artistry even more significant; and Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons are delightful pianists. The remaining songs include a high-spirited Die Forelle and Seligkeit, a wonderfully introspective Der Einsame and a moving and gorgeous An mein klavier (although she seems to miss a breath for a tiny fraction of a second at the beginning of the 2nd verse). The final "Erlkonig", one of her most favorite recordings, is a track that will knock you off your seat with its intensity. Parsons's playing is adequately intense, and Schwarzkopf's "mannerisms" which the Schwarzkopf bashers love to hate, are deadly powerful in pointing out all the 4 characters of the demanding lied. Be warned, the cry of "gewalt" by the end of the lied will cause your heart to miss one beat! Sound recording gets better throughout the CD, from acceptable mono of the first 2 songs to the crystal-clear stereo of the final items.
Highly recommended. Masterful singing from the queen of German lieder.

Although i do not understand each word it sings, i m just happy to hear it till the last song finishes. I feel content.

Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

'Songs by Reynaldo Hahn',French 'chansoms' written by a Venezualean Jew and performed by an all star English team of vocalists and accompaniest, is quite enough for me to forsake my Shubert for a few hours and immerse myself in these evocations of the world's most musical language. My discovery of Hahn in this release and the similar collection by Susan Graham shows me that the salon art song did not die in the 19th century, even if offerings from artists in English, German, and Italian are a bit thin.

From my point of view of the amateur listener, these performances are simply so pretty, as with an overripe peach, they approach, but never pass over to the banal.

A fine, underestimated master of the mélodie.......2004-12-05

Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) was taken to Paris at age 3 and became, early enough (his most famous song, Si mes vers avaient des ailes, was composed when he was 12!) a steady feature in the musical life of Paris.

Lover of Marcel Proust, sought-after musical entertainer in the salons of the Highest Society, diarist, composer, singer, renowned conductor, influential music writer in the most powerful daily in France (Le Figaro) finally General Manager of the Opéra Comique before dying of a brain tumor in 1947, Hahn was a multi-faceted musician of the highest probity. His songs are simple, patrician, utterly elegant, and always set to the best poetry. His simplicity and purity of means accomplish in little what many pretentious thunderers fail even to approximate. He was a minor master.

Hahn had a light little baritone voice, a little croak of a voice, really, with which he made himself enourmously popular in high society drawing rooms before the First World War: the voice that charmed duchesses and made the most reserved princesses smile! He even made some 50 records between 1920 and 1930, which show his unique, expressive musicality, unfailing sense of phrasing, unpretentious elegance of style, and fine piano-playing (He almost invariably accompanies himself.)

Hahn's own 78s, and a very few others by the likes of Ninon Vallin, give a clear recorded testimony of how his songs ought to be performed: simply, sincerely, with charm.

Charm is not in oversupply in this Hyperion collection (the singers are rather wooden English people with somewhat grey voices) but the other qualities are honestly, conscientiously supplied. Many of these pieces are not easily come by, especially in such well-recorded, well-accompanied perfomances, and though Hahn might perhaps have smiled to hear such a straight-laced presentation of his little creations, this album is really quite worth the asking price.

Beautiful French lieder.......1999-04-24

Reynaldo Hahn's early years coincided with the sway of French impressionism, and these early experiences with introverted poetic expression affected his life for ever. Hahn's songs are by nature reflective. Many of them are set to poems by impressionist poets, such as Verlaine; some of the most sublime ones grow out of the lyrics by Victor Hugo. Some of these songs subtly reflect Hahn's personal experiences: he was gay, unreconciled with himself, and closeted till the day he died. Even some of his closest friends didn't know the source of his restlessness. A one-time lover, and a life-long friend of Marcel Proust's, Hahn learned to express himself in song, the way Proust expressed himself through the chain of forever regressing recolletions in prose. The selection of songs on these two discs presents some of the best Hahn's output, exhibiting all the hallmarks of his style: subtly undulating accompaniment, melodies full of free-flowing intimacy, imaginative cadences, and plenty of room for interpretation by individual performers. Of the wonderful vocalists here, Steven Varcoe, a beguilingly beautiful baritone voice, deserves a special mention.

brilliant recital.......2005-03-02

This is an amazing CD of schubert lied- if only it wasn't in such short measures. Recorded in 1981- this recording showcases price at her idiomatic best; predating her isolde recording with carlos kleiber. The recording is of premium quality, the accompanist wonderfully sensitive and now a comment on the performance. The selection is rather secure and really stays in the popular stream for song choice but the voice, the interpretation is breathtaking. Price has a unique coolness to her singing- sometimes criticised for being so but here in this recital it couldn't have been more appreciated. The legato, the tone, the wonderful diction and the incredible warmth of her singing pits her in the league of schwarzkopf and janowitz and indeed she outshines her in some regards. 'Der hirt auf dem felsen' is extraordinarily moving but vocally it is less secure than her recording with James Lockhart but still wonderful. Lied singing cannot get any better than this most cherishable of schubert recitals.

An outstanding recital by a major Schubertian, at her best........1999-08-07

Dame Margaret Price has an enviable reputation for the beauty of her voice, for the 'aristocratic' quality of her lieder singing, and above all, her Schubert. Despite the recent decline in her vocal abilities, this cd catches her at her mature best - tone, interpretation and communication are wonderful -- as is the accompanist, Sawallisch, no less. Very highly recommended. A wonderful testament to a disappearing generation of recitalists.

One to Add to Your Collection!!!.......2000-08-15

Lucia Popp will be greatly missed as one of the most unique and versatile sopranos ever recorded in the German Repertoire. This Cd I truely believe is her last great recording. The warmth and distinct vocality she brings to Schubert is as memorable as it is moving. Popp skillfully jumps through songs from various periods in Schubert's life with attention to detail and the evocative qualities a vocalist needs to carry us into Schubert's world.

An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs.......2005-10-25

I bought this collection from a mail order firm in 1993, and can only call it "an encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs."

I don't listen to these discs track to track, but rather selected tracks and keep this 9 disc set in my collection as an encyclopedia, for reference, rather than to listen to for hours on end.

This collection doesn't contain any of the 3 great Schubert song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin", or "Winterreise." Most of these songs are less than 5 minutes in length, but some are as long as 20 minutes, with Recitative/Aria/Recit./Aria pattern. Each disc is 70 minutes or more, making for a lot of music. Going dollar for music, it's a good deal!

I am very thankful for this release. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) seemed inexhaustable, making many lieder and opera recordings in the late 1960s/early 70s when these recordings were made for DG. His partnership with pianist Gerald Moore lasted many years, and they recorded many of these same lieder for EMI.

I won't attempt to go into detail describing different songs in this large collection, but if you love great singing and Schubert lieder, consider this as an investment in eternity. If you only want a disc of "Greatest hits" of this genre, consider the DG "Originals" release of Fischer-Dieskau with both Gerald Moore and Jorg Demus in different tracks.

You can tell I'm biased in favor of Herr Fischer-Dieskau and his singing, which is always beautiful here. I also love Schubert as sung by Hermann Prey (1929-1998): Philips Eloquence, and Decca (deleted); Janet Baker (Hyperion, with Graham Johnson); and Hans Hotter (EMI, with "Schwanengesang.")

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs.

Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

An excellent survey of Schwarzkopf in lieder singing.......2005-09-24

This material, part of EMI's comprehensive reissue of Schwarzkopf's recorded legacy, shows her off in every phase from early to late. Only two items are as early as 1948 or as late as 1973. The bulk of the recordings comes from her prime, the mid-Fifties through the mid-Sixties. As a fan, I am glad to own it all, but for others who just want to hear the best of Schwarzkopf on record, there is a lot of that here, spanning some composers who were among her favorites.
