The neo-swing movement hit Broadway in full force with the December 1999 opening of Swing!, a high-energy song and dance revue celebrating the music of the '30s and '40s. The show combines swing classics ("Stompin' at the Savoy") and wartime standards ("I'll Be Seeing You") with originals from its cast members. Cabaret chanteuse Ann Hampton Callaway, Everett Bradley, Laura Benanti, Michael Gruber, and ukulele-toting Casey MacGill (fronting the Gotham City Gates) perform solos and duets as well as quintets arranged by Manhattan Transfer's Yaron Gershovsky. Callaway (whose writing credits include the theme song for the TV series The Nanny and Barbara Streisand's "I've Dreamed of You" and "At the Same Time") has a voice that can burn on a ballad, blare like a trumpet, or scat up a storm. Of course it's a shame not to be able to see director-choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett's high-flying swing and Latin dancers, but this cast recording is an enjoyable romp in the spirit of Broadway's 1981 Ellington tribute, Sophisticated Ladies. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
I was so disappointed with the "Oh My G---!!" in lyrics.......2007-04-18
I bought this for my son and we won't be listening to it because I don't appreciate the "Oh My G---!" Why do they have to ruin a good CD. I know it doesn't bother some people, but if it bothers you, DON'T BUY. I just wasted my money....
Unusual.......2007-01-03
I bought this CD on the assumption that it was just a compilation of music pieces. It is but they are pieces for a musical play as opposed to ordinary music pieces.
A fabulous score to an eye-popping show.......2005-08-07
Any who have seen "Swing" on Broadway know that the dancing is fantastic. But those who love swing music, good singing, and superior musical arrangements will love this recording. The singing is top-rate, no matter who is doing it; and the arrangements are complex and delightful. I can't stop listening to this CD. So, if you love swing, go for it!
SWING-BLUES IN THE NIGHT.......2005-03-01
I had the great honor of seeing this Broadway musical live on Broadway. I remember that I loved every act and song. The performers were excellent and I floated out of the theatre. We had a chance to meet the performers after the show and they all were very welcoming and each one signed our original copy of the Swing CD that we bought that night. It's a memory I will cherish always. I highly recommend this show if you love to be entertained from beginning to end. My favorite part was the Blues In The Night performance and also I'll Be Seeing You. I walked away with tears of joy! Enjoy!
Swinging with Swing!.......2002-04-25
I saw this show OBC a couple of summers ago and WOW!!!!!!!!! I was so amazed, that I absolutely HAD to buy the CD while there! I am a little obsessed with musicals, and most students at my small college knows it! I am an R.A. in one of the dorms, and the girls on my wing constantly tease me about it. However, I think most of the girls have requested to borrow this CD because it's fabulous! All I have to say is that I am a permanent Anne Hampton Calloway fan, and her renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You," and "Blues in the Night" still blow me away! Every song is worth listening to, and thoroughly enjoyable!

archaeology of the future.......2004-09-30
Of everything Ms. Monk has recorded, this is to my opinion the very best. Despite all the emphasis on Dolmen Music, don't forget about the other four songs on the album, they're precious! Musically truly amazing and - yes - spiritually moving, the title track can be best decribed as a form of musical archaeology, gradually uncovering some sort of future community. This might sound vague, and the association might be entirely personal, being both a musician and an archaeologist myself. But listen to this incredible work of art, and you will never listen to the human voice in the same way again.
STRANGE DIMENSIONS OF THE HUMAN VOICE.......2002-07-09
To quote Meredith Monk: "The voice is a language, a world of continuing discoveries." She uses her voice to sing, moan, yodel, squeal, whisper and gurgle, at the same time conjuring up a panoply of characters, from elderly women and precocious children to shrieking ghosts and chanting priests. With the exception of The Tale, she does this on Dolmen Music without words, restricting herself to swooping vocalisation, inventive phonemes and ritualistic incantations. The Tale starts off with a child's weird laughter and vocal contortions and then proceeds into some weird lyrics over shattering glass and car horns. The long piece Dolmen Music that concludes the album, sounds very gothic and medieval with interweaving male and female voices. There is very little to compare Monk's work with - perhaps the closest would be some of the works of Diamanda Galas or Tibetan overtone chanting. All in all, a very unusual album that takes to human voice to places it's never been before.
Wow!.......2002-02-14
I just can't get this album out of my head. It's pretty incredible. I didn't even know human voics could make some of the sounds that you hear on this.
First of all, if you're reading this I imagine you're already familiar with Monk. She's not exactly "mainstream," so why else would you be here reading this? Approach this and other Monk albums with an open mind; Meredith Monk is the musical equivalent of abstract expressionism, so if you're expecting something that resembles any preconceived notions of what music traditionally is, forget it! This takes the art to a whole new level. But this is truly a haunting album. I have portions of track five stuck in my head.
A fascinating disc.......2000-11-13
This CD includes one of Monk's few "songs" (with lyrics) -- "The Tale" -- which is a quirky, funny little piece -- and the 20 min title track, which was also titled at one point "Stonehenge," I gather. Both of these are extremely strong cuts and worth listening to. My favorite Monk CD is BOOK OF DAYS, also transplanting us to some imaginary past; my second favorite is FACING NORTH, which, recorded in Banff, explores the feel of the arctic. Third on the list is DOLMEN MUSIC. Only serious devotees need proceed further, though DO YOU BE has some good moments, too (but is out-of-print, I think).

Album Description
Drawing upon varied roots, The Booda Velvets' collaborative songwriting has evolved to create a unique sound that combines strong melodies, evocative lyrics, captivating guitars and solid grooves. Their debut album, "Headrush," displays an impressive range and depth, from the moody and kinetic title track to the hard-driving anthem ''American.'' With a blend of lush distorted guitars, melodic vocals, and layered soundscapes, The Booda Velvets craft songs that are passionate and intelligent. Their music explores dynamics ranging from intense and visceral to dreamy and serene, with an undercurrent of pop sensibility that occasionally rises to the surface.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the Time.......2005-11-05
So, what's in a name? The Booda Velvets may have taken their name from an animal care product, but they hail from New York City, so the `Velvets" reference is not going to go unnoticed. Nevertheless, these guys have precious little in common with the Velvet Underground. Nor do they have much in common with the underground scene at all. Instead, they are quite excellent songsmiths who appear much more interested in making good, mainstream music than in maintaining some formulaic allegiance to any underground (can you say "The Strokes?"). To my ears, the band they most resemble is Live (less that band's pompous, straight-faced self-indulgence), which I think is also surely unintentional. Even then, this resemblance is mostly due to the production, particularly in regard to the processed lead vocals.
Headrush is a musically accomplished piece of work that can insistently demand your attention, without becoming overbearing. Indeed, it is this set of contrasts that brings most of this disk to life. The lyrics can be pointed and purposeful, but never lapse toward pedantic or preachy; The vocals are consistently emotional, perhaps even desperate, but never shrill or pathetic; And the music is well arranged and cautiously produced, without sounding false or overworked. The arrangements deserve special merit, with all songs full of good ideas that help them to resonate well after the song ends. Two songs incorporate cellos ("Altitude" and "Everything Under the Sun"), and in both instances, they push the songs higher, until they soar.
"Cassius Clay", a song that uses the boxer as a metaphor for never quitting, is not as corny as it sounds, and in fact would probably make for a great lead single. "American" is a track that invokes the pre-9/11-but-post-Amadou-Diallo point of reference toward the police force; perhaps unfortunate in its timing, but not any less relevant than, say Springsteen's "41 Shots" (interesting faux pas: the guitar lick imitates a European siren, not the nauseating squawk that is so ubiquitous in New York City). Although they are unashamedly driven by the alternative-pop-rock market, the Booda Velvets aren't afraid to tackle odd time signatures, either, with "Salome's Wish" kicking hard in 7/4 for four solid minutes before it breaks the tension and resolves into a standard 4/4 beat. Also deserving special mention are "Staring At the Sun", "Solitaire" and "Waiting", which are good enough to trash all unnecessary comparisons; taken together, these songs prove that this band is good enough to stand on its own.
I think it's pretty cool that these guys appear to be completely disinterested in posing, or playing themselves into a corner. New York City is a tough environment for a band that doesn't adapt to its pre-ordained sense of what a NYC band ought to be, and the Boodas music rings true because they don't compromise. The songs on this collection have an emotional resonance that rings true, and it ought to ring well beyond the borders of the city that has borne them. A- Tom Ryan
Beautiful, intense rock.......2005-08-05
A fantastic debut from a band that was enthralling live, and here is captured just as compellingly. From high-energy rockers like "Cassius Clay" to the sparkling title track, to the politically charged "American," this CD is packed with great songs. Fairly successful at the indie level, it's a shame that this band never made it really big -- they were just a couple of years ahead of their time.
*BAM*.......2002-12-15
I loved this cd, me and my women make love to this cd all the time *BAM*
Fantastic Fusion.......2002-05-25
I saw the Booda Velvets live in Urbana, Illinois. They openned for Gene Loves Jezebel, believe it or not! But unfortunately they followed a horrible frat band and the crowd was thin when they went on. Regardless, they put on a fantastic show and hooked me to their fusion of all that's good about modern rock. They are fun to watch and definitely experience their music when they play. They're also really nice guys and came down to introduce themselves to everyone in the audience. "Headrush" is a phenomenal debut.
An incredible debut album!!!.......2002-05-01
I have yet to miss a show in Uniontown with these guys. I actually heard them live first, which they produced an incredible show. I then bought the cd. I have become a huge fan. They could be classified I guess as an "Electric Rock" type of band but they pull in such a wide variety of melodies in the music spectrum. If you like Stereophonics, Radiohead, Coldplay or The Clarks, you will definitly like these guys. With Dan on vocals/guitar, Adam also on guitar, James on bass and John on drums, this band will have great success. I hope to hear these guys on the radio soon. Buy the cd, I highly recommend it!!!

One of this decade's most under-appreciated CDs.......2006-07-06
I checked out this album on the recommendation of a review in CMJ Magazine. From the first spin, it grabbed my attention, and hasn't let go since. Radio 4's other three albums all are good, but Gotham! is the one I keep coming back to. Its production is rough and raw compared to their other albums, with lots of guitar distortion in the mix, but that's part of the excitement. Granted, the band's influences (Gang of Four, Clash, PiL) are pretty obvious, but so what; there are far worse acts to take as role models. None of the songs here is bad or lazy, and at least half of them are downright excellent. ("Our Town," "Eyes Wide Open," "Speaking in Codes," "Certain Tragedy," "The Movies" and "New Disco" are my favorite tracks on this CD.) When I play Gotham!, as soon as the last track ends, I'm perfectly happy to let the whole CD repeat. How many CDs do you hear, in the course of a year, that you can say that about?
A fairly bland rock album.......2005-12-03
The main problem with this C.D. is that none of the tracks are really very catchy. Except for the energetic song "New Disco" that finishes the album, nearly every track is relatively dull electronic rock that gets old pretty quickly. Radio 4 can also be criticized for using a sound effect that sounds strikingly like the bass for Nine Inch Nails, yet does not impress me nearly as much. Only near the end of Gotham do the real gems emerge, such as the song "Certain Tragedy". Although the uninteresting vocals are somewhat of a hindrance, joy can be obtained from this song's energetic guitar and addictive rhythm. The aforementioned "New Disco" is also a really good track for its noisy atmosphere, featuring the occasional cry of "New Disco!" and a series of electronic squeaks which never cease to entertain. Generally this album is fairly tolerable, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Great album!!! Sounds like their live set!!!.......2005-05-27
I just saw these guys open for the Gang of Four and they did an exemplary job!! They sound a little bit like Bloc Party, Gang of 4 and a lot like their own selves. Of all their CDs, this captues their live sound the best! A rhythmic synth and guitar blast!!
Not original but a listenable variation...........2005-04-20
This is by far Radio 4's best album to date--Yes, they sound like Gang of Four....Yes...it sounds like Jah Wobble playing bass....here's a new one, they even remind me a bit of Dance Society with the synth textures and the sometimes shouted lyrics. Amidst all the comparisons and blatant lifting, I must admit, after listening to Entertainment, Solid Gold, Metal Box and every other 'influence' for going on over 20+ years---I'm glad to have something a bit differant-----Franz Ferdinand sounds like Gang of Four and Au Pairs....still interesting....even the Futureheads sound like a mix of XTC and early Bill Nelson (Red Noise era). Truth is, these bands are made up of kids that have grown up listening to their parents record collections.....I would certainly rather have a band ripping off Wire and the Comsat Angels then playing grundge, metal or rap....
Ah yes, the sound is the thing!.......2004-07-10
I always wondered what happened to Graham Parker.
Don't worry about it,
Just shut up and rockaway!

Five stars says it !.......2005-11-14
This CD is worth 5 stars as far as I'm concerned. I only give 4 or 5 stars. When I was young my mother said that if you do not have anything good to say then don't say nothing at all. So, if I buy a CD and I am sorry I did that...my response is to not rate it at all. If I am glad I got it I give it 4 stars. If I am overjoyed that I bought that CD it gets 5 stars.

I finally wore out my copy of "Meooow Royale" and had to buy another one. Then my friend borrowed that one and never gave it back. I simply can't hold on to this CD because it is SO AMAZING! I am considering getting a one-way ticket to New York to meet this goddess they call Voodoolulu, she has cast a major spell on me!
