The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Think of Morrissey fronting Prefab Sprout by way of the Go-Betweens, and you're in the game with New Zealander Stephen Jones. His six-year bedsit gestation period, neatly documented in recent months via three Handsome Boy reissues, suggested a pop maestro in the raw. Here he takes wing with a trio of supple, lyrically ripe U.K. hits ("You're Gorgeous," "Goodnight," "Candy Girl"), plus some sharp remakes of older material ("Dead Bird Sings," the uncanny Blue Nile imitation, "Bad Shave"). Tunefully addictive stuff from a pop original. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous.......2004-06-11
I first heard You're Gorgeous on the radio in the office. As soon as I heard the first line of the first verse I grabbed my pen and waited for the DJ to tell me who it was. My immediate reaction was Echo and The Bunnymen meets U2 with a splash catchy infection to top it off. Once I had Baby Bird scrawled on my memo pad I rushed out to HMV and bought the album.
Every song was great. The highly addictive riff of Candy Girl underlined the U2 - Edge influence which was a positive thing. I fell in love with the oboe on Deadbird Sings, laughed my head off at Jesus Is My Girlfriend and drowned happily in 45 And Fat. Of course, You're Gorgeous stayed infectious and still is to this day despite all the TV advertising overkill - they are seriously using it for baby's nappies now!!! Oh ek!
Somethings Going On was in the same league without the splash of catchy. Back Together is truely amazing. I havent heard any of the low-fi stuff (except Shop Girl - hilarious) but am wondering whether its worth splashing out on the box set.
I'd love to see him play live and eagerly await some new material.
cheers
Ugly Beautiful Says It All.......2002-12-31
There is some very distasteful and disquieting stuff here -- start with the insert cover which may be a toe-tagged corpse, follow that with the blasphemous-to-some Jesus Is My Girlfriend and Bad Shave, and then I Didn't Want to Wake You Up (not that he could have because the object of the song is quite dead, thank you). You get the idea. A couple other cuts miss; Atomic Soda in particular seems endless. I just hit the skip button for them and doing so still leaves eight or nine wonderful pop songs, twisted pop in a couple cases (Candy Girl and You're Gorgeous) but tuneful hooks and singable choruses abound. The CD closes with two wonderful bittersweet love songs, July and Baby Bird, pushing you out of this odd CD with a lingering taste of sweetness and, yes, innocence.
sexy & creepy & just plain good pop.......2001-07-25
babybird is amazing. excellent songwriting, excellent voice. it's, as i said, sexy & creepy, but also bouyant & uplifting. "45 & fat" will get stuck in your head for weeks.
Ugly Is Beautiful.......2000-12-02
More of a greatest hits than an album proper, Ugly Beautiful pulls songs from several of BB's indie releases for his major labor debut. It's fairly out there, some in England thought that I Didn't Want to Wake You Up was about murder or necrophilia (though I don't). BB has been compared to Echo and The Bunnymen, Robyn Hitchcock and The Smiths. He's mournful and a little low key. Still, I recommend it highly.
Another One Out of the Ordinary.......2000-07-14
These songs, especially "You're Gorgeous" and "Candy Girl" have a great nostalgic value to me, yet that is only possible because they are good enough to be remembered for a long time.
When I first got my "Ugly Beautiful" CD, it was disturbing to see all that blood and grime on the sleeve, but it's what's inside that counts, isn't it? Aside from the aforementioned two tracks, the rest of the album is a little less appropriate for mainstream charts, but that's probably good -- you see what those lads are really all about.
The vocals are memorable, and the tunes will stick in your head. That's probably all you need to know.

A good thing just got better........2007-02-03
The Ugly People -vs- The Beautiful People is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised when I learned that there was an unlisted bonus track at the beginning of the CD. No one has mentioned this song here, so I thought I'd pass along the information. To access the song, follow these instructions:
1. Put the CD in your player and press the play button.
2. Press and hold the rewind button as the first song is about to begin (you may need to press pause before you begin rewinding).
3. Rewind to about -3:30 and then release.
The Czars have hidden a decent song at the beginning of this CD, but you'll understand why they hid it once you hear the lyrics. It seems rudimentary when compared to "Drug" or "Lullabye 6000", two of my personal favorite songs ever, but it's still a decent song and worth hearing.
great album.......2005-08-30
This is one of those rare albums that really hit a chord with me emotionally. Its not in the individual details necessarily, but in the overall impression of the album. Disenchanted, yet uplifting, poetry in music, the cover of the album says it all!
Stately..........2002-02-28
Once the Cocteau Twins folded, Simon Raymonde & Robin Guthrie started Bella Union, their own small label. It seems that Simon went on an American holiday, because many of their signings seem to be US bands.
This is one of them. Now, whilst reviewing by comparison may be lazy, it is also one of the best ways to describe something you've never heard.
So, think Neil Young, Tim & Jeff Buckley; skip forward to American Music Club, Red House Painters, Mercury Rev, Spain, Magnetic Fields.
I think you're beginning to understand...

Customer Reviews:
Intense emotion; profoundly personal.......2004-01-16
Both Ugly Girl and Shawen's later CD, Deliver Me, are packed with songs so powerful in their emotional immediacy that at times the skin prickles. "Among the living" is a defiant shout against death; "Ugly Girl" tears open the angry, sad, and star-struck heart of a woman in love with an idol; the overwhelming refrain of "Only you" sweeps us into a whirlpool of obsessive love. Highly recommended.
haunting...clever...powerhouse rock at its best!.......2000-12-14
It's probably not the amazing guitar riffs and lyrics that grab your attention when you hear the Laura Shawen Band. More than likely it is Laura's intense vocal style, her deep vibratto is hard to match and it helps her bring depth to songs like "Sweet" and "Burn". The songs on this album are incredible and I can only imagine how they must sound live. Songs like "Shakespeare's Lover" are pure classic rock while "Burn" and "Ugly Girl" are cutting-edge alternative. This is definatly worth checking out!!!
