Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:
pretty darn good.......2007-07-17
This is very welcome addition to the Pumpkins library. I liked pretty much every song. Anyone who says this doesn't sound like the pumpkins is smoking something. It's a Smashing Pumpkins album all the way. The songs are mostly upbeat, heavier numbers(no really heavy ones though)and they could easily fit in with songs on Siamese Dream or any album after it. You get the feeling Corgan can write better songs in his sleep than most bands could in a studio. It's good to have Billy Back on his throne, showing the kiddies how it's done.
Nice to have them back.......2007-07-17
I, too, had some questions at to how much of a "Smashing Pumpkins" album this was going to be with only two of the original members. Even in the "old days," however, Corgan really was the band (I think he always performed almost all the studio tracks except the drums). I stopped listen to Pumpkins after "Siamese Dream" so I have probably missed part of the evolution of their sound.
As a fan of "Gish" and "Siamese Dream" I think Z is a different sound (but not radically so). Overall, I really like Zeitgeist. Maybe it is a cash-grab to milk the old fan-base but I can live with that. Most of the songs are pretty solid even if somewhat mellow and a touch pop-ish. Personally, I'm glad to have the Pumpkins back.
Recommended.
You can depend on Billy.......2007-07-17
For 7 years, 7 months, and 7 days (well it turned out to be 10) he took his chances yeah... but now he can make a big come back 'cause he's good like that.
SP, the new SD of the 21st century........2007-07-17
During my first perusal through Zeitgeist, this thought came to mind, "Which album is this? Hasn't this been done before?" The sound is like 7 years never passed, classic wall of guitars and great drumming on Chamberlin's part. For hardcore fans, this album is sure to please, it reaches back and uses all the SP cliche' riffs and sound. Not that this is bad, but you'd think there would be a little growth in the sound that was hinted at in Machina'. Billy is still the wordsmith he has always been - progressing to more contemporary issues. Now that the band is down to two with a couple of hired guns brought in to fill in, it reminds me of another duo of the past -Steely Dan. Their comeback album after 20 years or so was their classic sound as if time stood still for them, just like this album.
The Smashing Pumpkins...Zeitgeist....a 5 star album....Adore/ MCIS songs........2007-07-16
It nice to have The Smashing Pumpkins back even through band changes and 7 years since the last album. Its shame that the fine and gorgeous D'Arcy Wretzky on bass and James Iha on guitar are no longer in the band, but Billy Corgan has picked up 2 musicians to play for the new album. Billy Corgan has picked up very good looking bass player/vocals Ginger Reyes and plays pretty well for what I have seen which is cool. Also now on board is John Schroeder on guitar/vocals. The Smashing Pumpkins are right back on track and Zeitgeist is a great album. The album starts off with a goth kick with Doomsday Clock (song on Transformers soundtrack) and 7 Shades Of Black. The first released song from Zeitgeist is the very catchy Tarantula and neat retro 60ish hippy feel featuring the new band members Ginger and John. Songs on Zeitgeist weave through a total feel of Adore (my favorite SP album) and MCIS. Songs that have the Adore feel are Bleeding The Orchid, Neverlost, For God And Country, Pomp And Circumstance, and Zeitgeist all could easily be on Adore. Songs that have the MCIS feel are Doomsday Clock (which also reminds me of The End Is The Beginning Is The End from the Batman & Robin soundtrack...Doomsday Clock also on a soundtrack for the Transformers like stated earlier), 7 Shades Of Black, That's The Way (My Love Is), Tarantula, Starz, United States, Bring The Light, and (Come On) Let's Go and the same is true with MCIS. Get this album definitely worth it.

I'm in touch with you.......2007-07-17
The Smashing Pumpkins are back. The legendary rock band, which blossomed like a dark rose in the musical wasteland of the 1990s.
Okay, only frontman Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin have returned from the original lineup, and the absences can be detected. But their return album "Zeitgeist" is still worthy of epic praise -- dark, passionate hard-rock, written with a darkly poetic sweep. Too bad the extra material isn't so good.
The drums smash, the bass roars like unleashed tornado. "Is everyone afraid?/Is everyone ashamed?/They're running towards their holes to find out/Apocalyptic thieves/Are lost amongst our dead," Corgan drawls, telling us a story of gas masks, Kafka and fear.
It's followed with the roiling rocker "7 Shades of Black," with the level of depression you'd expect ("And without peer/And without fear/I'm without anyone at all!"). Then it pours into a series of blazing hard-rockers -- soaring grimy epics, buzzing and cascading bass rockers, a stripped-down melodic tune, and the soaringly exquisite "Pomp and Circumstances," which is only marred by Corgan singing "la la la la..."
"Zeitgeist" probably won't be gently compared to the Pumpkins' earlier classics, especially since it doesn't have James Iha and D'arcy Wretzy from the original lineup -- valuable talents both. But taken on its own virtues, it's brilliant hard-rock -- epic, dark, and with moments of sheer poetry woven into the stormy music.
If I had a main complaint, it would be that the softer songs are rare here, and that the bass doesn't have that epic quality in some of the songs. But Corgan is blazingly passionate in his playing, layering and building a storm of driving guitar and fuzzy bass. He pushes on the fiery melodies of each song, with Chamberlin smashing the drums beside him. These guys sound kinetic.
And Corgan's nasal voice sneers and drawls through the harder songs, but he can also sound wistful and tender, like when he sings, "that's the way my love is." And he pours plenty of passion into his songs, which seem to balance out between the happy and sad -- on one side, a crumbling, bitter apocalypse, and on the other, "no shadows follow me unsung."
Some of his songs aren't up to par lyrically, like "God and Country." But Corgan spins his weird poetry in other songs, like the the ethereal "Pomp and Circumstance": "Torn, broken and frayed/Oh don't we face/War, sunshine and grace/Oh won't you stay/For a while/We can fail in style..."
The special edition of "Zeitgeist" also comes with a eightyish-page booklet, but to be perfectly honest, the booklet is kind of pointless. It's primarily filled with arty photographs -- Paris Hilton in front of a burgeoning nuclear explosion, a grim reaper on the presidential podium, a Roman soldier, coffins, and quite a few others. They're interesting photos, but not really worth exerting yourself for, and they don't reveal much about the album itself.
The Pumpkins aren't quite all they once were here, but Corgan and Chamberlin are enough to make "Zeitgeist" a brilliant hard-rock album with some vintage flourishes. Just take it for itself, with no comparisons.
Thank You, Paris Hilton!.......2007-07-12
Their third start as a band (second without their bassist and this time with Chamberlin and Corgan only), the Smashing Pumpkings are half of what Siamese Dream used to be: innovative. This time like Siamese, Billy plays all the instruments with the exception of Jimmy on Drums. The most radio friendly songs include Tarantula, (Come On) Let's Go!, and Bring the Light. Here you will find songs in contrast to The Future Embrace and a mixture of Zwan's Mary Star of the Sea and Machina. The lyrics are political like "the're bound to kill us" from Doomsday Clock and "revolution!" from the song United States. The multiple-page book shows images of Paris Hilton (Starz), the U.S. podium, death, and children. The booklet also includes the lyrics to all songs and images of the two remaining Pumpkins. All photos were taken by Billy Corgan using multiple images to show what politicians are doing to America or in some cases facism. The music is lyrical and fueled by guitars and drums. One of the songs, Bleeding the Orchid, shows a sensitive side to what Corgan is trying to achieve with this reunion.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of George Crumb's works for amplified pianos is the stunningly varied assortment of sounds he coaxes from the instruments, what Crumb dubs "extended-piano resources" in his excellent annotation. Zeitgeist, from 1987, cycles through a variety of piano effects, many requiring additional materials (paper, rosin, and the like) to achieve their intended sound. The most characteristic sound of "Portent," for example, is achieved by sliding a drinking glass along the strings, creating a silvery glissando that at its most percussive evokes the sound of a Chinese cymbal. "Monochord" has a continuous undercurrent of drone, whose sound is reminiscent of the buzz of an Indian tanpura, overlaid with an ethereal melody. That's not to say that Crumb's writing is a pastiche of influences. His singular compositional language is instantly recognizable, as is the mood of awe that permeates many of his works. (It's no accident that Crumb marks many movements with such terms as "mysterious," "fantastic," and "mystical.") The theme of wonder returns in 1974's Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III), in which the two-amplified-piano setting is expanded with two percussionists (the excellent John Kinzie and David Colson) who use a variety of instruments to create a magical, otherworldly terrain.
This recording is Volume 4 in Bridge Records' milestone, composer-supervised Crumb Edition. Although neither of these works is new to disc, Susan Grace and Alice Rybak (the two members of Quattro Mani) are such formidable interpreters that the CD is a must-have for Crumb enthusiasts. It's also an excellent introduction for newcomers to his music. --Anastasia Tsioulcas

Love it.......2003-02-07
Agree with it feeling a little more mainstream, a little more folky, than some of their other stuff, but buy if just for "Just the One", jem of a song.
Andy
More of the same, only different.......2001-05-18
A rather special follow-up to the previous, self-titled album, and one that is guaranteed to polarise the fans. Personally I love it, with the exception of one or two tunes (P.C. Keen, most notably). The more mainstream style would seem to mirror the Levs settling down a bit in their old adage, but as they've always said, "Home is where you make it", and if that's what they choose... the protests are still there, particularly in the vitriolic Hope Street and Maid of the River, but it seems the band is settling down to enjoy themselves, and credit to them if this is the result. Even Men-an-Tol seems to be a look back with a pang of regret at their earlier, more radical days.
Enjoy it, it's great.
Fantastic!!.......1999-09-05
This album is fantastic. I disagree that it's one of their weakest, I think it's one of their strongest. To me it's more mature. Yes it's different from the previous three albums which are absolutely cracking but change is good, I would hate to see them doing the same thing over and over. As is sang in Exodus "the only wrong is fighting changing times"! Pure masterpiece.
Unfortunately not their greatest work; but still good.......1998-08-02
This is the weakest of the Levellers later works (1990 onwards). This is their most mainstream album, a sharp change from their occasional folk music and use of tin whistles and didgereedoos. However, it is still good with such songs as 'Hope St.' and one of their 'manifesto' songs (like 'Dance Before The Storm'), 'Men-an-Tol'. It also includes their biggest hit as a single, the annoyingly short 'Just the One'! While this is something of a transitional CD, leading to their greatest work (so far), 'Mouth to Mouth', it would be a good addition to anyone's collection. Perhaps not the best intoduction to the Levellers' music, it may be appreciated more by current fans or people looking for a more populist style of music.
