How many singers do you know who can sing in a language (or seemingly a real language) and make sense of it all? Who knows what this woman is singing about? You know what, I don't care because the sound is meaningful, mythological and beautiful.
Did you arrive here from staring at your foots?!.......2006-11-16
Basically there are two crowds who seem to find themselves researching the purchase of a Cocteau Twins release. One come from a more pop music oriented background and are looking for something different from the 80s. The other are indie/alternative music fans who have been getting into shoegaze and have heard that these guys were pioneers.
I fall into the second camp.
Maybe you started with My Bloody Valentine? You've tried stuff like Slowdive, Pale Saints, Lush, Ride, Flying Saucer Attack etc.?
Maybe you've bought Psychocandy (Jesus and Mary Chain) hearing that it too was a precursor to the shoegaze genre?
And you've ended up here.
I guess Psychocandy covers one end of the spectrum, and Pink Opaque the other. Psychocandy brings the noise, the Velvet Underground 'art-punk' kinda cool, and the feedback assault.
Pink Opaque brings the dreamy, reverb drenched sonics, the sultry female vocals, the tacty 80s drum machines.
On first listen you might think its all a bit 80s and lame... But after a couple of rounds it'll sink in a little more on its own merits.
The Pink Opaque is definitely both a collection that shows vision and predicts the shoegazing scene, as well as being a bit of a product of its time.
A lot of great songs, easily accessible but still with enough sonic mayhem and edge to retain relevance and spirit in the indie music history books.
Takes me back to being a teen.......2006-10-09
This was my introduction to Cocteau Twins. I had this LP back in high school and LOVED it. Listening to it now takes me back to a simpler, more innocent, time. Liz Fraser's voice has this beautiful, etherial, quality. If you've never listened to the Cocteau Twins this is the best way to become aquainted with them.
Good grief........2006-09-07
Elizabeth Fraser did not work with Dead Can Dance. Lisa Gerrard did. Two different people. Two different bands. Someone named their daughter after a Cocteau Twins song and doesn't know the difference between the two First Ladies of 4AD? Horrifying.
For the record .........2006-08-08
I'm sorry to have to correct a previous reviewer: "Millimillenary" is NOT included on the CD singles box. In fact, it appears nowhere else, not on any Cocteau Twins album that is available on CD. Not even the recent Lullabies to Violaine collection, which is a shame. Its original source, according to the Cocteau Twins website, was a New Music Express compiliation (these came along free with the magazine). Why this beauty has been allowed to languish is a mystery. But if you want to hear it, and you definitely should, this is it. This compiliation was my introduction to the Cocteau Twins, amd it was love at first listen.

A Decent Grab-Bag Collection........2002-11-05
"The Pink Opaque" is an odds-and-ends compilation which pulls together tunes from previous albums and EPs, as well as two rare tracks: a remix of "Wax and Wane" and "Millimillenary," which appeared on a 45 with an old issue of the Brit music mag NME. Covering a period from 1982-85, "The Pink Opaque" is a decent collection that captures the dark atmospherics and etheral touches of the Cocteau Twins, mostly distinguished by the lovely (if inchoherent) warblings of its lead singer Elizabeth Fraser. The remix of "Wax and Wane" is more aggressive in tone and eliminates the drum machine that surfaces on the original. "Hitherto" moves along with gloomy guitars and crisp drums, while "Aikea Guinea" stands out with Fraser in good vocal form. While I'd normally suggest that the casual listener grab their individual LPs, "The Pink Opaque" is a worthy consideration for Cocteau completists.
the Pink Opaque.......2002-04-24
This is the most romantic music I have ever heard. My wedding music was choreographed with 'The Spangle Maker', 'Aikea-Guinea', 'Lorelei', 'Millimillenary' as guests were arriving. 'From the Flagstones' played as the bridesmaids walked down the path. When the bridesmaid arrived at the gazebo, the historic church bells in the plaza chimed 6 o'clock. After which, the ticking of 'Musette and Drums' caught the guests in silence as they turned to see 'the bride' (ME) walk down the path to my husband to be.
My husband and I have shared twelve years since, and we both adore the music of the Cocteau Twins.
The Cocteau Twins made the wedding very special to me and my husband, beautiful music to share on a beautiful day.
The Epitome.......2001-11-11
I first listened to this album when I was in the ninth grade and it left me absolutely amazed and dumbfounded. I adore the Cocteau Twins and believe this is probably their greatest album, "Heaven or Las Vegas" being their second best. "The Spangle Maker" and "Pearly Dewdrops Drop" are beautifully touching songs. The instrumentals and vocals are highly detailed and quite unique. The Cocteau Twin's music is extremely touching and often emotional. If you're fortunate enough to get a hold of the CD, buy it!!!
A gift from a friend.......2001-04-12
That is how I was introduced to the Cocteau Twins. At the time, I was still listening to all of my Black Flag and Descendents CDs heavily (I still regress from time to time). The first time I saw the cassette (yes, this is what I still have as well), I really didn't think that I'd be all that impressed. That was wrong. I have very few cassettes that are still intact. This is one of the few. Absolutely amazing.
Early compilation of the spaciest stuff.......2001-03-08
Cocteau Twins is a Scottish band formed in 1979 who recorded their first album in 1982. They were unknown in the US. To introduce the band to America, the record company threw together this album. It consists of tracks from the first three albums, some of them remixed and a couple of "rare" tracks. Fairly ironic that it is now only available as an expensive import.
This album seems to flow fairly well because all the tracks chosen were very similar in style. It is all spacy, ethereal stuff, with unintelligible female vocals. There is not enough distinction between tracks to make anything stand out. But, it makes for great background mood music. The music is similar to the spaciest music of Kate Bush, Sinead O'Connor or Tori Amos but the vocals are less irritating (especially compared to Kate Bush). Who influenced who? Kate Bush was the first on the scene, but her music evolved into the spacier sounds after the first Cocteau Twins release. Amos and especilly O'Connor owe a lot to the Cocteau Twins.
If you are a Cocteau Twins fan, it is probably best to skip this album and get the first three instead. If you want a nice sampler of some good spacy music, this is one to get. This is especially true if you like the spacy aspects from the queens of alternative music (Bush, O'Connor and Amos). If you prefer their pop tunes, then you won't like anything by the Cocteau Twins.
