4 out of 5 stars Dark, beautiful, more interesting than most........2001-07-25

I've had this gem of an album for quite a while now. Still sees some frequent play in my stereo so it definately warrents a good review. I've read more negative reviews on this album than positive unfortunately. The main criticism I have read is the deep, droning vocals. Yes, they do drone on and on, but I like it. There is something about the mood this album creates but I can't quite pinpoint it. The music is almost hyponotic--it creates a great atmosphere and mood that few other albums I own can do. "Dark Man" starts off accordingly with a catchy creepy riff. Other favs are "Blood of Summer" and "Sacrificial Highway". But really, the album as a whole, played start to finish, is the best experience of this dark, mysterious band.

One more mention must be made about the artwork on this album. Amazing. Beautiful and intriguing; in fact, I even got a tattoo of the inside album jacket. Definately the best artwork in my whole collection.

4 out of 5 stars Dark gothic music with deep booming vocals.......1999-08-14

I would give this disc 5 stars just for it's originality but their newest disc, "The Black Flower" is a 5 star disc.

If you like any type of heavy metal OR stuff like Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Bauhaus - you will love this band. This cd has much more of a heavy metal edge than their new one so get ready to clean the blood from your ears.

All the tracks (except Track 2) run between 5-8 minutes in length and each one is more gloomy than the next. Singer, Kristian Whalin's vocals are incredibly deep - he sounds like Type O Negative's Pete Steele on prozac.

Besides being extremely heavy, the music also has a lot of keyboards and even has a somewhat classical music feel to it. These guys are defintely great musicians.

Bottom line - this is one of the most original discs to come out in a long time.
