Scottish Stellar Singing!!!.......2006-03-18

I heard of Horse while I was living in Scotland and went to a couple of Edinburgh Festival shows and was impressed. I have the first 3 albums released from her, yes she is a she, and I really like them, but especially Same Sky and Gods Home Movie. A new album is due for release in 2006 so hopefully Amazon will get that too - just so I don't have to pay shipping and handling from Scotland....or beg my Mum!!! If you listen to the album mp3s and you like them then the album won't disappoint.

What a Great Album.......2005-06-06

By way of background, my brother worked for Capitol Records in the late 1980's and early 1990's when it was headquartered in Los Angeles. While there, he obtained a promotional cassette copy of this album, along with a multitude of others. When the technology improved to the point where you could listen to CD's in a car (yes, there was a time when you could not), he sold this cassette to me along with the rest of his cassette and LP collection. I finally got around to listening to the cassette and was immediately taken with it. I gave the cassette away, hoping to convert another listener. I do not know if that ever happened. Years passed and I found myself thinking about the songs and missing the cassette. To my surprise, I found the music had been issued on CD. I said I was surprised; so much good music is still unissued on CD. This is why I have kept the LP's. I should add a thank you to Amazon.com. Now you can basically find a new or used recording of anything. That, gentle readers, was not always true, either. Okay, so why do I like the album? Yes, I still call these things albums. An album is the work of the artist. The CD (or LP or cassette) is the medium on which the work is issued. To begin with, the album is a well crafted set of songs working through exhuberant to introspective moods. Some are uptempo songs, some are ballads. A lot of time and effort has been put into the lyrics, which present a mature perspective of life. I really like the voice of the lead singer, Horse. There is sexual ambiguity here. From the name and cover art, it is not clear if Horse is a man or woman. It is my impression that Horse is a woman. It does not matter, really. Her (His?) singing adds depth to the lyrics and expands the music. I should add that her voice is probably not to everybody's taste, which may explain the album's low sales ranking. People expect women to sing like Judy Collins. Horse is an alto, with a voice lower and huskier than that of Christine Perfect. Judging from the prices on the used copies, it will only require a modest investment to own this album. If you do buy it, you will not be disappointed.
