5 out of 5 stars One of the 80s era-defining peerless albums.......2006-10-28

It's really hard to articulate the sheer sense of excitement felt upon the original LP release of this album - surely one of the best, era-defining, utterly peerless albums of the 80s - I can still recall unwrapping the shrinkwrap back in the 1980 and putting it on my turntable - ANTMUSIC, DOG EAT DOG, PRESS DARLINGS, on & on - the hits don't stop - a visionary, clever, hilarious, dead-cool amalgam of Bolan/Bowie glam posturing ignited with post-punk style and a dose of fable-like mythology - the look, the sound, the entire package came together for the first (and last time) here. Over 25 years later, KINGS still sounds more fresh, immediate, and just plain FUN that anything on the radio in 2006. Sad, but true. Now where oh where is the DVD anthology with all of the Ants' videos?!

5 out of 5 stars Ants Invasion.......2005-12-30

This album, which held the #1 spot on the UK chart for most of 1981 (though only reaching #44 on the US chart), is simply Adam & the Ants' greatest achievement. It starts of with the fantastic, upbeat & ecstatic 'Dogeatdog', a UK #4/US #15 smash. The song takes a while to get used to, but when you finally get it, it will blow you away.
'Antmusic', a UK #2/US #14 single, was Adam & the Ants big breakthrough, & the only single that was able to reach a respectable chart position during the post-murder Lennon craze of christmas 1980. Being kept of the top spot by the songs of the tragically murdered prophet of his generation, 'Antmusic' nonetheless, broke Adam & the Ants internationally, & desrvedly so, for it is among his best & catchiest songs. New listeners, start with that song, for it will get you in the first listen.

After these two songs, the record suddenly gets very dark. Actually the album is a pretty dark affair, with 'Los Rancheros' & especially 'Feed Me To The Lions' bringing visions of a Bowiesque post-apocalyptic landscape to mind. 'Press Darlings' is another catchy classic followed by 'Ants Invasion' & 'Killer In The Home', that follow up the apocalyptic tension. 'Kings Of The Wild Frontier' itself, a UK #2 hit following the #9 placing of the non-album 'Young Parisians', is the strangest song on the strangest record. Indeed. There is nothing else to say about that song (later `Ant Rap' would follow up on this tradition of taking Adam & the Ants' weirdest songs into the UK top 3).

`The Magnificent Five', `Don't Be Square (Be There)' & `Jolly Roger' (the name signifies the direction Adam & the Ants would take on their next record) are somewhat average Adam & the Ants songs (though such a thing doesn't exist). `Jolly Roger' jumps from brooding to a parody of singalong every 15 seconds or so. They are all great songs, & carry the hilarious/apocalyptic mood up to `Physical (You're So)', a #19 hit in the US, but never released as a single in the Ant homeland of the UK. Truly one of his best songs, it is also one of his darkest, carried by a paranoid guitar feedback. It leads into `The Human Beings', another misty dark song, which scares you into laugter... or?... well, it sounded good. A strange chorus carries the tune & ends this most fascinating & brilliant album.

5 out of 5 stars Adam Rules!!!!!.......2005-07-28

This album, like all the rest of his albums, ROCKS!!!! He will always be my favorite artist. If only Adam can see this, I'd wanna thank him for being one of the best entertainers of all time! Long live the kings of the wild frontier!!!

5 out of 5 stars BOLAN OF THE 80'S.......2004-12-31

Along with Human Leagues "Dare" and Soft Cells "Non stop", Kings has to be the best album of the 80's, it is Adams masterpiece and sadley never matched. One of Adam's main influences was Marc Bolan which is very apparent in his work, I remember seeing him on Top of the pops in 1980 performing Dog eat dog, it wasn't some pop star miming to their latest record, this was a performance full of energy and originality, which paved the way for the New Romantic movement of the early 80's for stars like Human League, Culure Club and Duran Duran. I remember having the leather trousers, frilly shirt and a white stripe (and nearly getting beat up for it), it was a great time in British pop music, a great time for British youth venturing out to the clubs and bars, the guys dressed as Adam, Simon Le Bonn or as a Numaniod (Gary Numan) and the girls like the Human League girls and possibly the last time British youth had individuality. Personally however, Adam's follow up "Prince Charming" never did it for me, the two singles were great but he had really sold himself out to capture the under tens market which lasted a few months, however Kings of the Wild Frontier remains a great snap shot of a great period in British pop fashion and movement.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!!!!.......2007-03-11

I bought this as a replacement for a record album (vinyl LP) and I am very pleased with it. The sound quality is excellent. Don't buy this for the extras (demo stuff), they really aren't worthwhile. Get the Stand and Deliver DVD with all the music videos from amazon.uk I am not expecting a US release of that DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful issue with it's share of short-comings..........2006-04-23

This could have been the definitive issue - in fact it probably is. It is THE definitive Adam And The Ants record (although my personal fave is still Dirk Wears White Sox). The U.S. Epic issue of the original CBS version added two B-Sides ("Press Darlings" and "Physical (You're So)"). They were the U.K. B-Sides to "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" and "Dog Eat Dog", respectively (the B-Side to "Antmusic" was "Fall In"). So in fact, those songs don't have much business being on the original issue considering Epic stuck them on there after the album was already issued (in the U.K.).

This remastered issue is incredible. The drums have never sounded as rightfully booming as they do on this CD. I highly recommend any Ant fan to pick this up. And if you have never heard this CD - it's easily one of the most original New-Wave records ever released. Quite a feat considering the general variety and diversity of most New-Wave records (in my humble opinion).

Sony has to get it together an release a definitive B-Side collection which includes "Press Darlings" (1994's B-Side Babies included "Physical" and "Fall In yet stupidly overlooked "Press Dalings" thus negating any "definitive" aspect to it.

    "Dirk Wears White Sox!!"

4 out of 5 stars That music's lost its taste, try another flavor........2006-01-29

Better than "Dirk Wears White Sox", but not quite the sensational album fans or others might have you believe. This is a good album, but the remastering is probably the weakest of the remastered series. It still sounds rather quiet to me. There are more memorable songs here like "Antmusic", "Los Rancheros", "Dog Eat Dog", "Jolly Roger", "Kings Of The Wild Frontier", but the album as a whole is still uneven.

It was remarkable how he changed his sound and image though, and even more amazing that it all worked. Something like that could not be achieved in today's fickle market. The graphic design of the remastered package is great and ties into all the other remasters. The packaging is digipak, and the information booklet has all the lyrics. While I understand that fans would have liked Adam's memoirs on the album, I really didn't mind.

There are six bonus tracks, and I couldn't tell the difference between the original "Antmusic" and the alternate take. The rest are demo versions of songs on the album. I think this is the weakest album for bonus tracks. They do nothing to add to the pleasure of the listening experience and I agree with others that they should have included "Press Darlings" and "Physical" from the American release.

    Overall, a good album.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazon.com's tracklisting is wrong!.......2005-03-12

Hopefully Amazon will post a correction soon, but as of 11 March '05, the tracklisting here is incorrect. The correct tracklisting is:

    1. Dog Eat Dog
    2. 'Antmusic'
    3. Feed Me To The Lions
    4. Los Rancheros
    5. Ants Invasion
    6. Killer In The Home
    7. Kings Of The Wild Frontier
    8. The Magnificent Five
    9. Don't Be Square (Be There)
    10. Jolly Roger
    11. Making History
    12. The Human Beings
    13. Antmusic (Demo)
    14. Antmusic (Demo)
    15. Feed Me To The Lions (Demo)
    16. The Human Beings (Demo)
    17. S.E.X. (Demo)
    18. The Omlette From Outerspace (Early Version Of Ants Invasion - Unreleased Song Demo)

Amazon's UK site has the correct info.

Note that the alternate tracks from the original US release are not included on this CD (?!): Press Darlings and Physical. (The version of Physical on the Dirk remaster is the earlier Do It version.) Seems like a really weird decision, especially since the 1998 Sony remaster includes both of these tracks...

4 out of 5 stars "It's Your Money That We Want and Your Money We Shall Have!".......2005-01-31

Adam and the Ants' second release, 1980's "Kings of the Wild Frontier," was a mammoth hit in the UK where it went Number One for an incredible 12 weeks on the album chart. The band's sound boldly clashed British punk with African tribal rhythms, and the formula resulted in the hits "Antmusic," "Dog Eat Dog," and the dynamic title track. Other album cuts that shared the same brash energy of those singles are the catchy "Jolly Roger" and "The Magnificent Five." Nearly a quarter century since its release, "Kings of the Wild Frontier" gets digitally remastered and repackaged with bonus tracks. The remastering is pretty decent, and the CD is presented in a digipak with a nice booklet containing lyrics and rare photos. In addition, we get a handful of demo and rare tracks that will likely appeal to diehard Ant fans. But don't throw out your previous copy of "Kings of the Wild Frontier" yet. Much to my disappointment, this new edition omits two key tracks that appeared on the old version: "Press Darlings" and "Physical (You're So)." Why they're not on this album (or at least added as bonus tracks) is a mystery and is a big mistake on Sony's part, and as you can see from the reviews below mine, I'm not alone in my opinion. Still, this remastered version is a good way to introduce new listeners to one of the most successful British albums of the 1980s.
