5 out of 5 stars Copy this CD! You'll need it when you wear-out this hidden gem.......2006-09-27

Blues-rock at its best. Brother Cane appeared on my radar when I heard "and fools shine on". Every time I heard it, which wasn't too often, I REALLY enjoyed it. Finally, I pursued it on CD. A great move on my part. Simply amazing music. Rocks hard! Yet, the ballads are fantastic as well. Combine Johnsons' voice with incredible musicianship and top-notch arranging and what do you have? An amazing experience each and every time. I had to replace my original...true, it was almost worn out, 'cause it was a bonus for the thief that took my stereo. Fool probably didn't even listen...Tracks 6-10 are the highlights for me. Something about Damon Johnsons' voice...Hard to put into words. Give it a listen. Then try "Wishpool". Like "Arc Angels"? You'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Band, Dearly Missed.......2005-10-27

I've loved this band from their start in 93", with their self titled album, "Brother Cane". I live about 100 miles north of Memphis, where Brother Cane originated, and I had the pleasure of seeing them live at the Pyramid (one of Memphis' best show arenas) with Van Halen (fronted by Sammy Hagar) as the headliner. Brother Cane was on thier "Seeds" tour at the time (about 1996). I'd have to say Brother Cane ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! Not many people could still stand up for Van Halen (although they still rocked equally). Unfortunately, Brother Cane split up after their third evenly matched release, titled "Wishpool", (although "Seeds" was still a cut above the other two albums). I would love to see Brother Cane make a reunion, as many of their fans would. They are dearly missed. They had a sound of thier own which is a mix of Collective Soul and Soundgarden/Audio Slave, with a little Nirvana grunge added for texture. This is a must have CD that sets an awesome mood at any gathering or just to rock on down the highway! TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!

5 out of 5 stars And Fools Shine On!!!.......2005-10-05

And Fools Shine On is probably one of the best songs ever created. think about it, the guitar riff is simple but catchy. the words are mellow but deep. I give this cd a 5 just because of that song! enjoi

4 out of 5 stars More Distinctive Means Better.......2003-07-14

The 2nd album from southern rock outfit Brother Cane has much of the same elements as their debut: bluesy wah-wah inflected riffs, "High Speed Freezin'"; tales of hard times and desolation, "Intempted"; and singer Damon Johnson's deep throated pain: "Voice Of Eujena." Here it's just done better and in a more distinctive style of a band finding their sound. A hint of grunge creeps in the haunting "And Fools Shine On" and the very AIC influenced "Rise On Water." This in no way lessens the impact of the material and the overall somber mood surrounding it. A solid second record from an underrated band.

4 out of 5 stars like king's x with a smidgen of twang.......2002-06-26

tight, clean-sounding musicianship (not a ringo in the bunch!). searing vocals. nicely arranged melodies and thoughtful lyrics. used, very well i might add, odd chord progressions rarely heard in hard rock nowadays. i love how every song sounds like a well-crafted grunge power ballad. brother cane reminds me of a little trio called king's x whose sound if mixed with some candlebox, gov't mule and a pinch of kansas, would come out with "seeds" as their byproduct.

4 out of 5 stars Great Rock n Roll from an underrated band.......2006-01-10

I was lucky enough to see these guys in 1992 at a small venue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Got No Shame was getting a lot of airplay at the time and I really liked what I heard. Thus, three of my closest buddies packed up the Diesel Volkswagen Rabbitt, grabbed a bag of goodies from our local pothead/dealer, and motored on into Kazoo with smiles on our faces and anticipation in our hearts. We were not disappointed...

The same can be said for this cd and each subsequent release. Just a great rock n roll band, quality songs, stellar guitar work, and a haunting voice by Mr. Johnson. There is just something about that voice, can't put my spiderfingers on it, but there is something that really effects me. You can't go wrong with either of the three Brother Cane releases. My personal favorite is Seeds, but this one is nearly as good. Also, check out Damon Johnson's acoustic cd entitled Dust. Great work. Thanks guys, and Damon keep on rockin' and I'll keep buying!

5 out of 5 stars What Can I Say?.......2005-09-20

Totally organic, southern blues at its best. Never turned anyone on(and I did many times) to this disc who didn't immediately reach over to turn up the volume and ask for a copy. Because I didn't dare take away from the sales that they deserved, they were taken to where I purchased my copy and got their own. Start to finish, REAL, and at the time of its release, RARE. Damon Johnson is a gifted, underrated guitarist, writer, singer. The follow up, Seeds, had the unmistakable taint of corporate influence that preys upon a band such as Brother Cane. The songs on Seeds, while better than most that came out in the year'95 felt "label approved" which meant the band compromised. To save myself another review I'll sum it up in this one: Brother Cane redeemed themselves w/ WishPool. Amazing. Growth. Integrity. Beauty. That sums up their 3rd and final (hopefully not) release. Wishpool gives hope for the future of rock and roll that , in the end, fans come to their senses and actually let a cd make them THINK what the lyrics mean and not just have critics tell them their opinions. Buy the B.C. catalog (and D.J. 's Dust solo cd.) to hear how music, in a perfect world, should be.

3 out of 5 stars Rockin' Record.......2003-07-14

Released during grunge-mania, this dirty record proved that southern rock was alive and well. "Got No Shame" opens with a wavering harmonica and steps right into southern boogie mode; a hint of what's to come. The band takes the best of anthematic Skynyrd, "The Road" ; hardnosed Guns'N'Roses riffs, "Pressure" ; and Aerosmith sleaze, "Satisfy Me" and turns in a rockin' record coming to a small town bar jukebox near you. Singer/guitarist Damon Johnson's dark vocals are the main distinguishing quality here, able in both whisper "Woman" and yell mode "Stone's Throw Away." A live-feeling energetic record, if a bit formulaic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-12-29

If you like "kick your ..., punch you in the face" rock and roll, this is the album for you. Plenty of bluesy type sound mixed with good ole fashioned hard rock. A must buy. If you can't afford it, it's even worth stealing money from your granny's purse. You will enjoy it, I promise.

4 out of 5 stars A slice of pure rock and roll........2000-10-22

These guys serve it up hot and heavy and get right to the point. "Got No Shame" is one of those songs that you will not forget once you hear it. The harmonica comes on in a bluesy form and then the band kicks it into gear and they don't stop for the whole album. This is what rock and roll should sound like, not some of the other stuff that is being passed out as true rnr.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an amazing band........2006-10-21

Brother Cane came to my attention with their first single "Got No Shame" and I was hooked from the get go. Great players all with amazing feel. What was so cool about this band is that they could change up their sound and you had no clue that it was them. The first time I heard "And Fools Shine On" I was completely suprised to find out that it was Brother Cane. They were a top tier rock/blues band and it was a shame when they called it quits. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of great, straight up rock and roll!!

4 out of 5 stars Just a small sampling of Brother Cane.......2005-11-30

I discovered Brother Cane in the early 90's when they were the support act for the Aerosmith "Get A Grip" Tour. I'm not usually impressed by most opening acts and not by many bands with just one listen, but Brother Cane rocked. I'm a big fan of blues based rock, and multi-player acts that still have keyboards/organ players (think Tom Petty, REO, Black Crowes). So I have all of Brother Cane's cd's. I just happen to read a review of this disc and found out it had a bonus song not found on their other offerings. As a true fan (and completest) I had to get this. It's certianly the right price! Recommended. And don't miss their first album, it's the best.

5 out of 5 stars Good Intro to a great band.......2005-07-21

I remember the summer of '98 being the last really big time for a bunch of post grunge bands such as Candlebox, 7 Mary 3, and Brother Cane. This collection does a good job of capturing this band in its prime on its first two albums. All the charted singles are here except my disc has the title track from Wishpool even though it lists 'Machette' on the track list!?. Wishpool is still a personal favorite disc of mine and songs like 'Look For Something More' and 'Crow Flies' still make it essential to me. Overall, this is a great set from a band that never got its just due

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Any Fans of Rock.......2005-09-16

I think the biggest problem for Brother Cane was the fact that they were always submerged in a radio friendly alternapop culture. During the early to late nineties when then they were around and still making music, you would have been hard pressed to find a better band. Stylistically they had a sound all their own, yet despite this, they had a familiar sound which reminded you of many great bands that preceded them. I think that perhaps one of the biggest influence on their sound would have to be Soundgarden. Damon Johnson, the vocalist at times sounds reminicent of Chris Cornell, but lacks all the annoying 'nasally/scratchy throat sound' qualities of the latter and ends up being truly memorable and enjoyable. He's just a great singer, backed up by a very talented, tight band. It's a shame that they were never marketed to their full potential. If Wishpool had been released today, it might have had a greater chance of finding it's own niche. It's a great album that misses the mark, which is to say, that it never becomes the "alternative" alternative to Alternative. It's just a ballsy, gutsy, rocking out adventure and sometimes even poignant album that finds a way to speak directly to your soul, with such songs as as The Truth, and Human After All. I highly recommend it - if you find it in a bargain bin somewhere - as with any of their albums, snatch it up - it's a gem you won't soon get sick of showing off to your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Grows on you..........2004-05-24

I wasn't feeling this cd when it first came out. Brother Cane's first two efforts had a good mix of hard rock and southern rock. I intially thought that this would be a breakout cd for the group after an underated sophomore gem "Seeds". Grunge was big at this time and I think Brother Cane were misled into believing they were part of this movement. They should have stuck to their hard rock/southern rock roots. After repeated listens though this cd has some good songs on it. It doesn't match up with "Seeds" but growth and maturity are evident on this 3rd release. Damon...a word of advice. Get the original band back together, return to your roots and put out a kick-ass fourth cd that we all know you are capable of!

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favor And Get This.......2003-07-09

Damon Johnson where have you gone? If only more people were asking this question then maybe Bro' Cane, as they are known by their fans, wouldn't have faded away so easily. It's shame they did because this album rocks in a timeless sort of way that would sound fresh in any era, regarless of what's popular at the moment. Johnson and producer Kelly Gray polish up 12 arena rock gems that run the gamut; from recollections of hard times, "I Lie In The Bed I Make," to the bluesy intro of "Where Was I To Know." Even the most commercial song on here, an almost Aerosmith-like ballad "The Truth" refuses to sound as hokey or forced as that band's latter work. This revealing honesty is partly becuase of Johnson's deep vocals and is also due to the fact he underwent a divorce during the making the record. On the album's closer "Human After All," when he sings "blue sky ends...rain it clouds my life again," it's not a cliche. He feels it and beleives every word - and so will you.

4 out of 5 stars Don't believe the radio!.......2001-02-10

Well, if you had any doubts about Damon Johnson's songwriting abilities before hearing this CD, I'm sure they've been dispelled afterwards. Brother Cane smokes on this CD! I heard "I Lie In The Bed I Make" on the radio and I picked up the CD immediately. There are so many strong songs on here, that I was unsure why they picked the songs they did to be singles (other than "I Lie In The Bed I Make"). I really enjoyed "I Surrender", "Lead My Follow" and a song that just about didn't make the final cut for Wishpool, "Human After All". I'm really glad they included it though. Some very powerful music in the last 3 songs of this disc.

In my opinion, they picked some of the weakest songs on the CD (as weak as they possibly could be) for radio play. This says a lot about the jugheads that run the record companies and radio stations, but that is a rant in itself.

"Where Was I To Know", "Machete" and "Mirrorball" are more of my favorites. Some kick ass rock and roll being served up.

All in all, buy this CD. And see Brother Cane live. You won't regret either choice.

4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2000-08-21

Lyrically deeper and more musically complex than their first two albums, Brother Cane shows their talent on this record. I admit, I don't care for this album as much as the first two. It's great, but a bit too much of a departure from their earlier work. Stand-out tracks are "I Lie in the Bed I Make", "Wishpool", and "I Look for Something More". While good, their are a few songs that just seem to rub me the wrong way, "The Crow Flies" and especially "Come Alive Again". They redeem themselves with the last four cuts on the album, however, perhaps the four most well-crafted songs they ever wrote. This is still one of the best rock albums around, but it just doesn't hit you with the same power the their first two records.

I saw Damon and Brother Cane in 1992 and was really impressed with him and the band. I've picked up all of the Brother Cane releases over the years and came across this cd on his website. Wow!

Great work from a very talented singer, songwriter, and guitar player. There's something about his voice that really makes him distinct. Anyways, do yourselves a favor and pick this one up. If you are really interested in getting it and can't through Amazon.com, check out Damon's website and there will be a link for it there.
