4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

5 out of 5 stars The more the better I feel.......2007-03-24

Really true heavy metal act. All tracks carry some dark, evil, mysterious meaning prompting the ardent fan to think deeply of the character of Kreator's songs. Anyway truly brilliant attempt except maybe the drumming which could be deeper, harder but perhaps the production is to blame for the guitars also.
Kreator should re-record all releases according to the Violent Revolution and Enemy of God concepts (sound).

    5 out of 5 stars VERY SIMPLE..MUST OWN!!!.......2005-11-18

This is always right under ''REIGN IN BLOOD'' and ''DARKNESS DESCENDS''..and for good reason!!

This is not the ''smartest'' album ever..and I think it is not as good as their AMERICAN competition(mentioned above) but this still rule's..and is always good to rage to when ever I put it on!! I love the intro to this album..about as much as anything in music history!! PERFECT INTRO..FUKK!!!

I do how ever recemond OLD SODOM first(''in the sign of evil'' should do ya good!

The ''FLAG OF HATE'' ep is on here as well.. what a nice combo!! like Lemonade and Brownie's or Tang and pizza!

    BUY IT..OR YOU SUCK!!!

    ''PLEASURE TO KILL''..yes I agree!

5 out of 5 stars THE GODS AWAKEN.......2001-01-23

I HAVE BEEN INTO ROCK AND METAL SINCE 1966 (THAT'S DAY ONE OF METAL , KIDS! ) KREATOR RANK AS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL METAL ACTS OF ALL TIME. "PLEASURE TO KILL" DOES JUST THAT, DELIVERING ONE CRUSHING BLOW AFTER ANOTHER. "AWAKENING OF THE GODS" IS THE HIGH POINT OF THE ALBUM ,IN FACT DAMN NEAR THE HIGH POINT OF ALL METAL HISTORY!! THE ONLY (MINOR) COMPLAINT IS THAT SOME OF THE GUITAR SOLOS ARE SOMEWHAT UNDISCIPLINED AND INACCURATE.BUT LISTENING TO A LOT OF TONY IOMMI, YOU GET USED TO HEARING ACCURACY AND DISCIPLINE! BE THAT AS IT MAY, THE SONGS AND PLAYING ON "PLEASURE TO KILL" ARE WAY ABOVE THE AVERAGE METAL EFFORT. SO IF YOU WANT METAL THAT DELIVERS, KILL!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars i am ashamed for this c.d........2004-09-27

I just heard only a few seconds of 'both ends burning' online of this monstrosity and i couldn;t handle anymore! it was just crap! i've never heard of anyone doing a tribute album to roxy music and bryan ferry, but i now i know why: ya just don't!!!! if you're considering to even buy this for a 'back in the c.d. rack' kinda a business, you're wasting your time and money!

    1 out of 5 stars POXY MUSIC!.......2003-12-02

I picked up a bargain-priced copy of this cd last time I visited London. As soon as I'd listened to it, however, I couldn't bear the embarrassment of owning it and got rid of it very quickly! What we have here is NOT a tribute to Roxy Music at all, just a shoddy collection of Roxy singles that were re-recorded by session musicians for those tacky "20 Great Hits, not by the original artists" compilations you used to see in supermarkets, gas stations etc. That's why the majority of these insipid "tributes" are such slavish imitations, with the singers desperately trying to copy Ferry's vibrato. Arthur Brown's rendition of Dylan's "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" was never intended as a tribute to Roxy Music. If you were going to pay tribute to someone, you'd obviously choose one of THEIR songs, not a cover. Anyway, Ferry's version appeared on his debut solo album, having nothing to do with what Roxy were doing at the time. Insult is added to injury by the awful artwork and the embarrassing "artiste" names (eg. Clit Richards) that the compilers have invented for this travesty. Roxy Music's 1979 UK comeback 45 was called "Trash" - that should have been the title used for this shameless piece of opportunism.

1 out of 5 stars This is no tribute to Roxy Music, it's a terrible insult.......2002-10-23

Boring, disasterous, cover version of Roxys classic songs. I have no idea why this so-called "tribute" was even released. This CD isn't even worthy of existing as the covers are absolutely a catastrophic injustice to Roxys music. Just the album cover art alone is enough to make even die hard fans run the other direction.

Stay as far away from this! End of Story!

1 out of 5 stars Someone was drunk.......2000-12-10

Do they hate Roxy Music that much? No need to waste my words and your money on that sick joke.

5 out of 5 stars Sick Death Metal from Germany!!!!!.......2001-12-14

This Kreator album is definitely their best and most brutal.Songs like: "Pleasure to Kill"and "Under the Guillotine" will make any true metal fan go nuts!!!!The guitar riffs r fast, the vocals angry, and the drum beats r very intense.Other German bands to check out are:Destruction and Sodom.

5 out of 5 stars OH YEEEEEAAAH! KILLER ALBUM!.......2001-08-07

What can I say? Many albums claim to be equal to Slayer's "Reign In Blood," but "Pleasure to Kill" is the only one that can measure up to that thrash masterpiece. Mille and company lay waste to every thing in their path on this release...if you don't beleive me, just get this thing! The production is raw enough to enhance the aggression, but its a LOT better than on "Endless Pain." There are a few slower moments like "Riot of Violence" and "Take Their Lives," but overall this is a really fast album. My only complaint would be the guitar solos, which are basically maniacal tapping and whammy diving, but for the music they're playing here, it suits the insanity that is so prevelant. FEEL THE PLEASURE TO KILL!

4 out of 5 stars Makes Slayer look like the Backstreet Boys.......2001-04-08

Next to Sodom, Kreator have been the Leaders of Germany's Trash-Metal Movement and "Pleasure to kill" is certainly their best album ( next to "Renewal" ). After the great Intro "Choir of the Dammed" they continiue to make Slayer look like the Backstreet Boys with the following 8 Tunes. Singer Mille variates between deep growling Vocals( "Death is your Savior") and high-pitch screams ("Pleasure to kill") and sounds really pissed off thoughout the whole record. The title track has to be one of the best metal songs ever written. The really cool thing about this band is that they avoid a lot of common "metal"-clichees, especially on their other great album "Reneval", which is a little milestone on it's own. After all, Kreator remain the best Metal-Band that ever came out of Germany ( I'm not talking about puppy-radio Bands like Halloween ) and "Pleasure to Kill" is a must-buy or at least must-listen to for any serious metal head. Don't forget to get "Reneval" too!

5 out of 5 stars German Thrash Godz!!!!!.......2001-04-08

Pleasure to Kill is by far Kreator's heaviest, most brutal release. Songs like Ripping Corpse and Riot of Violence are worth the price of the CD alone!! If you don't have this record already, only one word comes to mind....POSER!!

5 out of 5 stars great but the prodution.......2001-04-07

every little song on this album is great but production is weak luckly the later albums are much better.

        Amazon.com essential recording

Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08

Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.
