4 out of 5 stars Interesting piece of work.......2007-01-03

I love Porcupine Tree. I find their music stimulating and unique. I own quite a bit of their stuff. This album is very interesting and it gets four stars for creativity and some nice guitar work.

Having said that, unless you are a rabid collector of PT works, you may want to purchase the Stars Die compilation as the 12 minute mix on it is more or less the highlight of this album (the mix on Stars Die is a modified version of Voyage 1). I often find myself admiring the Stars Die mix, but I will rarely stick this entire cd in my stereo. However, if you want to purchase it to support the band (lord knows that too many horrible "artists" are supported these days), you can't go wrong either, as this cd can be obtained for a reasonable price.

4 out of 5 stars This isn't so bad.......2006-08-25

Voyage 34 was actually a collection of two extended singles released in 1992 and 1993, the first two parts from 1992 and the last two from '93. OK, so material here was supposed to be slated for Up the Downstair, but didn't. At this early point in Porcupine Tree's career, it was still a Steve Wilson project, he had yet to have a band (but that would quickly change), although on "Phase IV", Richard Barbieri provided synth work.

Many people regard this as one of the worst albums in the Porcupine Tree catalog, but it's not that bad. For one thing this is an instrumental album, you won't find Wilson's voice anywhere, but you do hear spoken dialog, about some guy by the name of Brian and his experience of LSD. Porcupine Tree was hardly the first to do an album about the experience of LSD, way back in 1967, none other than well-known Bay Area psychedelic rockers Jefferson Airplane recorded an album called After Bathing at Baxter's which was supposed to document the LSD trip. But of course you'll never mistake Porcupine Tree for Jefferson Airplane. For one thing, the production and the sound is quite modern, and you do hear plenty of '90s influences to go with '70s influences. The music has a darker, much more sinister tone, not the hippie type flower power stuff like you expect from the Airplane. The Pink Floyd comparisons are valid, the first two parts, especially features the same David Gilmour-type delayed guitar you hear on The Wall (like "Another Brick in the Wall Part 1"), with lots of ambient sounds to go with it as you expect from Porcupine Tree. The third part is much more techno-influenced, but I can understand why many might turn away from this cut, as the rhythm does stay the same throughout. The final part is mainly all ambient with yet more spoken dialog, I suspect the female narrator is the same person who also did "Not Beautiful Anymore" off Up the Downstair. People expecting some regular songs to go with the band's techno and ambient experiments might have been put off by Voyage 34, because it doesn't have regular songs.

I happen to own the most recent CD reissue, in digipak, and a new cover.

People wanting to explore the earlier PT catalog would obviously be advised to start with Up the Downstair, The Sky Moves Sideways, or Signify, but this is also worth having if you're a fan.

2 out of 5 stars The worst Porcupine Tree CD.......2006-05-26

I really love this band, however this CD just does not do it for me.
The annoying voice overs are just that very annoying.
There is no vocals, the music is good but has no real direction.
I can't really listen to this.

4 out of 5 stars SO THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO SYD BARRETT?!.......2005-11-19

Certainly a vanity project if there ever was one, but quite listenable all the same. In the late 60's and early 70's this might have passed for a near-death experience. As it is, here in the 21st Century, it all a bit schizoid, man. But a lot of fun. Hopefully, Wilson had his tongue in cheek. Some passages soar beautifully in pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd mode. This could almost have been titled "Son of Meddle." Anyway, you'll never consider YES's TALES excessive again. Now on to DEADWING....

3 out of 5 stars neither excellent nor terrible.......2005-11-08

Not a highly original concept, definitely a highly marketable one -- an LSD soundtrack (yawn). Sampled Pink Floyd guitar riffs, how clever! Turn down the dorm room lights, crank up the lava lamp, and voila! Instant psychedelic voyage, just add...well, I'll leave that part up to you to figure out.

Now that I've slagged it, I'll say that Porcupine Tree does this piece of music justice by carrying the prank all the way through. This is no half-baked execution of their idea. The songs range from 15-20 minutes each, are superbly recorded, and straddle a line between campy substance humor and furrowed-brow psuedo-science that is fun on quite a few different levels.

A novelty record at worst, a tongue in cheek acid parody at best. File along with Timothy Leary, Terrance McKenna, "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake," "Altered States" with William Hurt, "Mountain Jam" by the Allman Bros. and maybe your Cypress Hill records (I know you have 'em!) Don't take it too seriously or hold it in too much esteem and you won't be let down -- ahem -- I mean bummed out.

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09

This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!

    5 out of 5 stars Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02

If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.

    5 out of 5 stars A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10

This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

4 out of 5 stars Triumphant return of Flor's Mendelssohn.......2005-06-01

At last Claus Peter Flor's Mendelssohn symphonies, overtures and piano concertos (with Edelmann) have returned. On the basis of these recordings (all previously issued) Flor, who is probably in his early 50s now, is still one of the better Mendelssohn conductors out there.

In particular, his Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 have been hailed by critics on this side of the Atlantic for their beauty, proportion and Mendelssohnian sensibility. His other symphonies are also good and his collected overtures have been revered on both sides of the Atlantic by critics from Gramophone (which gave the overtures a rosette) to American Record Guide (which continued to promote his works even after they were out of print).

Flor's regualr partner in these performances, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, is a European band of the second rank. While not being confused with the more well-known orchestras in Vienna, Berlin or London, they perform universally well in these CDs in recordings that sound better than ever.

This is a very good collection of Mendelssohn's symphonic music and piano concertos that will rank with the best recorded boxes including Abbado and Karajn. In musical terms is far exceeds the collections led by Masur, Ashkenazy and the newer Naxos cycle of mixed quality.

Collectors that have never heard Flor conduct (or have never heard of him) can rest assured that this is a worthy alternative collection in this music. If this grouping and this price are attractive, go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice introduction to the work of a great soprano.......2007-07-13

This 2 CD set is a terrific introduction to the body of work of Victoria de los Angeles. As the "liner notes" point out: "She was an artist who brought individuality and a sense of joy to everything she performed. . . ." And this is not hyperbole. She was a top soprano in the middle part of the twentieth century.

    Some cuts exemplify her art:

"Un bel di" is a ravishing version of this well known aria. She demonstrates a rich voice with fine musicality. This is a ravishing version of this aria. The singer displays good vocal control. There are nice transitions across the registers.

"Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is another well known work for sopranos. Again, nicely done. She appears (to me anyhow) to catch the spirit of Mimi very nicely indeed.

From "La Traviata," she essays "E strano. . .Sempre Libera." This is an affecting version. She does not have the coloratura armamentarium that some have brought to bear on this aria, but she does a fine job nonetheless. She seems to capture the desperate spirit of Violetta in "Sempre Libera."

Rossini's "Una voce poco fa" is a nice tour de force for sopranos. De los Angeles does a nice job here. This is a work from the Bel canto repertoire, but she does well. She shows vocal agility and captures the spirit of the work. This is an affecting, charming version. There is some occasional vocal harshness, but not a serious issue.

From "Carmen," "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle." Richly and nicely sung.

Her range on this CD is worth noting: from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner to Rossini to Gounod.

And then another of her specialties--songs. She does a nice turn with the Spanish song "Malaguena." Then, in a nice twist, she accompanies herself on guitar in "Adios Granada." I'm not normally so excited about songs, but in this case I found her work enchanting.

So, if you want to get a sense of the artistry of Victoria de los Angeles, this is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The very best performance by Victoria de los Angeles.......2006-09-13

Is the recording on Allegro records of her performance of Madame Butterfly in New Orleans in 1954, not the Rome recording. She is simply radiant, perfect, a voice truly that is a victory for the angels. Unbelievably marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars In Memoriam: A Tribute To The Late Victoria.......2005-02-01

Victoria De Los Angeles died Saturday of heart failure at the age of 83 in Barcelona, Spain. The world of opera mourns her loss. She was a gifted soprano and a wonderful human being. On stage, she was able to directly speak to her audience and communicate with them in a very special and rare way that is not always seen today. She never hid herself behind a facade nor distanced herself from fans and audiences. She was born to sing opera. It was in her blood. This album showcases De Los Angeles in her most memorable and successful roles. Victoria De Los Angeles was one of the first singers from Spain to win worldwide acclaim. Others would follow- Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. De Los Angeles is showcased in this album which may also serve as a tribute to the now late soprano.

Her voice was essentially full lyric with some spinto. Hearing her renditions of "O Mio Babbini Caro"- a signature soprano role, as well as "Ebben Ne Andro Lontana" from La Wally and her performances as Mimi, one is clearly treated to the truest form of a pure lyric soprano. Her voice is spunned gold, with sweet, warm, feminine textures. Her reperotire remained in the Italian and French. Of course, being Spanish, she was a leading singer in Spanish Lieder and romantic ballads. Her Art Songs in Spanish are full of elegance and grace. A champion of obscure composers, she sang and recorded recitals that featured the works of lesser known composers, though strictly Lieder and Folk/Art Song.

Victoria De Los Angeles is fortunately a well-documented artist. Some film footage exist of her performances. I seem to recall that there exists a taped performance of her Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. She excelled in the lyric roles of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Her Madame Butterfly is a pure lyric rendition, with less of the dramatic intensity other singers have given the role- i.e. Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, etc. But her Butterfly is actually the way the role ought to be sung. It's a voice of grace, naivete and above all romance that must colorize Butterfly. The dramatic intensity only makes her sound older and madly passionate. She is only a fifteen year old girl who has been deceived and betrayed. She must remain youthful sounding. De Los Angeles does justice to the truest form of Butterfly. She was thrilling in French and Italian operas and her Spanish songs were briliant and beautiful.

Victoria will always be remembered. She was a unique and talented artist of the lyric repertoire. Her pure, lovely voice was like an angel's. There will never be another Victoria De Los Angeles. With her death, the end of an era also passes. In particular, I will always remember one reported incident. She was about to make her first recital in America but she had no accompanist- pianist/guitarist etc. When asked how she would handle this, she remarked: "Well I brought my guitar with me". And she proceeded to accompany herself with the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars the genius of de los angeles.......2004-02-14

the incomparable de los angeles combines exquisite sound and nuance to the world of superb singing. her mastery of a variety of styles is astounding and yet it always sounds natural.her magic will live forever.

    5 out of 5 stars A n angelic voice.......2004-02-06

De los Angeles' ability to sing with elegance and style has rarely been equalled and never been surpassed. She's the greatest Charlotte in "Werther", the most tender Santuzza in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the most sumptuos Nedda in "I Pagliacci". Her Lieder-Recordings are legendary, my favourites are the Spanish ones of course. What a piano-culture and what a velvet sound! Get this set, it's cheap and it has GREAT singing!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Legal Version of Doing LSD.......2004-06-20

This is a semi-concesptual album about a boy named Brian and his friends experimenting with LSD. This album sounds like classic porcupine Tree mixed with Pink Floyd and the Orb. It's very ambient, very psychadelic, and very good. During his "voyage" Brian realizes he cannot wake from his trip and is locked in his own subconcious trippy hell for the duration of the effects. If you're smart this awesome album might make you think twice about doing it. But then again, it seems to be popular among bands like Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd. Anyways, great album, and great concept. I like it!

5 out of 5 stars Depends on what you have expected from it.......2003-12-09

"Voyage 34" is 64 minutes loaded with ambient music.lazy sonic flight over the unknown territory.wierd voices, unexpected guitars and sounds.4 tracks about lsd narcotic abuse effects.wierd album but really interesting
"Part 1" is long narrated piece about a group of friends experimenting with lsd.as everything goes ok at the begining one of them after sometime cannot awake from his trip.he gets stuck in the unknown subcouncius world on his 34 lsd trip...
musically it is dynamic amibent piece with guitar background, groovy bass riff and keyboard soundscapes.propably it is the best part of whole album.while Brian tries to wake up the music is getting more powerfull and ends with wonderfull guitar solos.
"Part 2" is more nervuols and lazy.Narrator tells about trips to unknown part of mind which have been known over centuries.rhytmical background gets more "Flowing" but guitar parts are getting it more power.
"Part 3" and "Part 4" are definitly more electronic tracks.driven with sytnthetic beats htey have very introvertic atmosphere.while first two parts were more catchy the last two are slightly more experimental.
anyway - Porcupine tree's "Voyage 34" is their most strange and difficult album that all ambient and progressive music fans will lsiten with thrill.emotions and whole concept is amazing, musically and lyricaly too.Someone mentioned that it is almost legal lsd trip.well,it is not but this album let's you relax and flow with the music.for me,it is definitly a 5 stars album.Steven Wilson's genius once again striked here.

it depends on what you are expecting from Porcupine tree.if oyu prefer more lighter songs you should automatically buy "Stupid dream","Signify" or "lightbulb sun".if you prefer more ambitious progressive things buy "The sky moves sideways" or "On the sunday of life"."Voyage 34" may scare begginer fans but for more experience Steven Wilson's band fans it is a must-have.

2 out of 5 stars You don't need this if you have "Stars Die".......2003-03-13

If you already own the "Stars Die" collection, which contains Phase I of Voyage 34, you don't need to buy "The Complete Trip", since Phases II, III and IV are just deconstructions of the more sturdier and musical Phase I. The emphasis on the latter pieces is on the repetitive tape loops and drum machines, with increasingly less and less actual live music playing.

I don't mind the narrations but I would like more live band and less computer sequencers(which is all you get towards the end).

4 out of 5 stars Yowie Zowie - Floyd and the Orb mixed!.......2003-03-05

This is great music, especially the first 2 phases. It is truly music that you can float away in, though the narrations are the one thing I could have done without.

I concur with the other reviewers about the Pink Floyd sound. Just think of the guitar riff from Another Brick pt. 3 and the synths from Welcome to the Machine. Add a dash of the Orb a la the narratted parts and the mixing, and you have trip 34. As these long songs progress, the Floyd influence diminishes, but is still recognizable.

Since I love both groups, and The Porcupine Tree, I was quite happy with this recording. If you like any of them, I think you will be too. Definately best appreciated in a dark room on a good stereo played loud.

      4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-09-14

I love this CD. It is so strange and mellow. There are some fantastic parts in here. I would highly recomend it.
