Sadly, Curtains is the final entry in the long and fruitful partnership of lyricist Fred Ebb (who died in September 2004) and composer John Kander. While the show doesn't reach the heights of the team's previous masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Chicago, it's certainly a lot better than, say, their middling 1997 offering Steel Pier. Deliberately old-fashioned (it even features a real overture, something that's fast becoming a rarity), Curtains is a whodunit rolled into a musical--or vice versa. Set in 1959 Boston, it takes place backstage at a singing-and-dancing Western corker titled Robbin Hood. Someone gets killed, and a show tunes-crazy homicide detective (David Hyde Pierce) is called in. The plot is just a pretext for a series of very entertaining, characteristically brass-heavy songs that may not have the bite of old Kander and Ebb but are still very catchy. Above all, Curtains is (both thematically and stylistically) a love letter to old-school showbiz, and it's delivered on a silver platter by a cast of pros that includes the aforementioned Hyde Pierce, Kander and Ebb habituée Karen Ziemba, endearing Jason Danieley and, a notch above the rest, Debra Monk. Unsurprisingly, she chews the scenery and spits it right back in a pair of rowdy numbers: "Show People" and "It's a Business." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Curtains is an entertaining play within a play, as well as a "whodunit" new musical comedy featuring one of the last scores by legendary, Tony Award-winning songwriters
John Kander and
Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, New York, New York). Starring
David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot, "Frasier") and Debra Monk, the Curtains original Broadway cast album is produced by nine-time Grammy Award-winner Jay David Saks.
Customer Reviews:
JUST WHAT A BROADWAY MUSICAL SHOULD BE!!.......2007-07-17
In the tradition of good old-fashioned musicals that entertain for entertainment's sake comes this terrific, witty, clever, fun musical with a top notch cast and some swell songs. We were lucky enough to see this show several weeks ago. And as grand as it is to watch-- it is super to listen to as well. David Hype Pierce is totally terrific, as is Debra Monk. Karen Ziemba and Jason Daniely are first tier performers as well. The show moves along at a great pace, consistently entertaining. There are some wonderous Kander and Ebb melodies--maybe not on par with Cabaret and Chicago--but nonetheless still extremely good. Everything about the CD says high quality. It is well recorded and the performances are excellent. If you get a chance to see the show, grab the chance! If not, you can still enjoy the show with the playing of this CD. Highly recommended!!
CURTAINS is likable but not special........2007-07-15
There is nothing particularly great about this score, but it is likable, and it is Kander & Ebb's final work. That makes it worthwhile to have. The next time I am in NYC, which won't be until December, I would like to see CURTAINS, especially if David Hyde Pierce is still in it. I prefer revivals and old fashioned musicals like CURTAINS to the new shows with rock or folk rock scores, like LEGALLY BLONDE which I disliked.
The Last Kander and Ebb.......2007-07-13
Couldn't miss the opportunity to hear the last of the Kander and Ebb collaboration. This score has a familiar feel to it. The music is good but not great and the show seems as if it would be fun.
All DAVID HYDE PIERCE FANS WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-10
And even if you are not---the music is great!!!!!! This is the final collaboration between John Kander and the late Fred Ebb--plus throw in the efforts of Rupert Holmes (who wrote the underated MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD--and everyone's favorite guilty pleasure 70's tune--THE PINA COLADA SONG). Anyway, I always thought David was robbed of a TONY nod for SPAMALOT--so his win for this was quite overdue!
Every song is a winner---and it is not just because of Pierce--Deborah Monk also has one of the great show stoppers "IT'S A BUSINESS"!
All theatre buff will enjoy--I certainly did!
Very Pleasant.......2007-07-10
Nice, witty and pleasant music. Sadly, as the teams last work, it is not on a par with their earlier efforts. I kept expecting the big, gorgeous, soaring ballad of other shows, but it never really comes. I still think Steel Pier is their best work (tho the show didn't work). However when you are the composers of Cabaret, The Happy Time, Woman of the Year, Chicago, The Act and The Rink (among still more), you go down in theater history as one of the great songwriting teams in American theater.
The performers are all first rate, David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk are hoots. KAren Ziemba, as always, is wonderful. A major disappointment is that Jason Danielly's beautiful tenor voice is not given more to do. Overall, pleasant fun!!

I love John Frusciante, and he's my favorite member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This album is great, although it has a strong melencholy theme. The best song on here is definitely Past Recedes, and the others are also good. If you love John Frusciante you must buy this album, you won't be disappointed.

Upper percentile of (pigeon hole coming) Chill Genre.......2006-11-11
This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.
Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19
This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.
I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!
Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20
Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.
This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!
The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.
The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.
All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

With the rich, bourbon voice of Stuart Staples, incredibly lush orchestral arrangements with soaring strings, and brooding and melancholic lyrics, Tindersticks always threaten to go over the top into the netherworld of obtuseness. But somehow they pull it off, creating, in the process, some of the most beautiful, complex and dense music set to wax. Curtains realizes the considerable promise of their first two acclaimed records with such wonderful cuts as "Rented Rooms," "Desperate," and the John Irving-esque "Bearsuit." Best of all, though, is the charmingly tongue-in-cheek bonus track, "Marriage Made in Heaven" which features a duet with Isabella Rossellini, who, though a much more accomplished actress than singer, provides a charming and accurate vocal counterpart to the swooning Mr. Staples: "He just groans and moans." --Tod Nelson
Customer Reviews:
Fast one!.......2006-03-14
To me the first three albums by this band were the best with Curtains as the ultimate masterpiece. The compositions are all very good. I do enjoy the song 'fast one' the most. A very short yet progressive song. It ends with someone exclaiming "Jesus!" Indeed.
Now buy it and love it.
Carrer's highlight.......2006-01-17
Wow! This is f**** good! The Tindersticks' 3rd full-lenght album is an amazing collection of beautiful songs that somehow follows the unmistakable way paved by the band's first couple of albums, but got naturally better than that. All the songs in this collection are shiny, beautiful, intense. Their fascination power comes from the fact that they are somehow weird but yet lovely compositions, sweet to your years, with carefully applied distortions (like Nick Cave's ''Rock Of Gibraltar''). ''Are You Trying to Fall In Love Again (Tonight)'' is the album's centerpiece, followed by single ''Bathtime'' and precious gem ''Rented Rooms''. ''Another Night in'' is the opener that anticipates the raw-and-delicate sophisticated sound of the group, and it's always a pleasure to listen to Stuart's low, expressive voice completing this scenario of meditative, early autumn melancholy.
A Wealth of Gems.......2005-02-23
In the last couple of years, I have acquired and imbibed nearly everything that Tindersticks has recorded. I really enjoyed the first two, each of which had many strong points and only a few weak ones, and then I heard Curtains. Man, what a CD!
On Curtains, Tindersticks continues to mine a cynical, world-weary vein and in doing so, has really struck paydirt. The writing is tremendous as is Stuart Staples' delivery. My favorites are Another Night In, the jaded Rented Rooms, the dramatic Don't Look Down, the beautifully orchestrated Let's Pretend with its shades of Calexico and Arthur Lee, the romantic duet Buried Bones, the soulful (Tonight) Are You Trying to Fall in Love Again?, the deep-groove dance number Bathtime, and the sexy duet A Marriage Made In Heaven.
This CD has become a personal favorite. If radio programmers had any sense of musical adventure, there are a wealth of gems on Curtains that would be perfect fodder for an edgy AOR playlist.
If you enjoy an intense, mature sound and lyrics that go far beyond the usual without being irrelevant or nonsensical, then Curtains just may be for you. I highly recommend it!
Continued genius.......2003-09-30
A good follow up to the landmark second album. 'Curtains' delivers everything a Tindersticks fan would expect but is no worse for that. You have the humorous spoken word track, the duet and the unusual musical interludes.
'Bathtime' was an unexpected chart hit in the UK and 'Rented Rooms' has a hilarious line about not being able to wait for a taxi ride. Good late night music as ever with some wonderful string arrangements and Stuart's vocals just get better and better.
The alcolhol may have run out half way across the Atlantic as despicted in 'Ballard of Tindersticks' but the band have not run out of ways to entertain you.
Greatest album of the nineties?.......2002-02-01
This album would easily make it into my all-time top-ten record and is Tindersticks perhaps finest moment.
Some say that singer Stuart A Staples voice is one to eigher love or hate but I have troubles understanding how anyone can do other than love it. The songs, instrumentation, production, moods are all exellent but it is Staples voice that gives this record that special feeling.
Anyone into melancholic, moodfull, dreamy, bittersweet or passionate music should give tindersticks a try immediately. Among similar artist Nick Cave, Lee Hazlewood and 70's soul singers as Curtis Mayfield can be mentioned.
There are no weak songs on this album but absolute highlights are:"Bathtime", "Let's Pretend", "Rented Rooms", "Dancing" and "Are you trying to fall in love again".

Solid release by ex-member of Deerhoof.......2007-02-18
I bought this record before hearing any of the songs because I read that it was a cross between the best of Brian Wilson, The Vaselines, and Beat Happening. In my mind, I had what this would sound like perfectly mapped out. When I bought the album (on vinyl), it didn't initially meet the template I had constructed in my head. I was disappointed. Then I listened again the next day and found myself really digging it. It has a really cool lo-fi sound while still having good production quality (if that makes any sense). It's one of those warm sounding records that wash over you...even on the faster songs. I don't think there was a need to include a lyric sheet because taken outside the context of the songs, they don't really stand on their own as much. It's kind of fun looking at them later after you've thouroughly digested the music, to see how they used really interesting melodies to say just a few abstract words. Definitely worth getting. Don't expect Deerhoof, don't expect anything, just listen.

Pinnacle of Perfection.......2005-02-23
In my opinion, Curtains stands tall as the overall best CD issued by Tindersticks to date. In my review of that CD, I gave it a high recommendation. However, if you don't mind spending a few dollars more, then I recommend that you get this re-mastered edition instead as the bonus CD is certainly worth the extra money. Not only that, the remastering has vastly improved the sound quality of the original.
The highlights on Disc 1 are Another Night In, Rented Rooms, Don't Look Down, Let's Pretend, Buried Bones, (Tonight) Are You Trying To Fall In Love Again?, and Bathtime. Stuart Staples is at his apex as a singer on Curtains and the lyrics reflect the dark, brooding and cynical worldview fans have come to expect of Tindersticks.
Disc 2's best features are a gritty rendition of Bathtime, a Lee Hazlewood-esqe tale of forbidden love in Shadow, a pair of excellent instrumentals with Paco's Theme and Mannlow, two excellent alternative versions of the jaded Rented Rooms (one of which really swings), Make Believe, the sexy duet A Marriage Made In Heaven, and the regretful For Those...In short, the entire disc is worthwhile.
If you are a serious Tindersticks fan, but on a tight budget, then you might want to buy this through one of amazon's partners. I got mine that way at roughly half the list price and was entirely pleased with the speed with which my order was filled. The remastered edition of Curtains finds Tindersticks at the pinnacle of perfection, so don't miss out on this!
