Electric Warrior, T. Rex's best album, distills elements of Marc Bolan's earlier acoustic period with a dynamic rock rhythm section--drummer Bill Legend and bassist Steve Currie--and lush arrangements by producer Tony Visconti. Featuring the classics "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Jeepster," and "Mambo Sun," Warrior ranges from the space blues of "Lean Woman Blues" to the punk jazz of "Rip Off," with a sound fleshed out by chamber strings and the falsetto harmonies of ex-Turtles and Mothers of Invention members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. (Zappa sideman Ian McDonald plays sax as well.) Touches such as the arcing cellos of "Cosmic Dancer" and the sexy rhythms of "Planet Queen" perfectly bring to life Bolan's imaginative world of "diamond star halos" and "shadowless horses." A must for any serious collector of British rock classics. This remastered reissue is fleshed out with a half-dozen bonus tracks and a band interview. --James Rotondi

Marc Bolan's Calling Card!.......2007-05-17
This album captured a defining moment in rock and musical history, and made 1971 all the more 'cosmic', as well as honestly creating a genre imitated by many other bands whether consciously or unconsciously. It remains a sad reminder to his loyal fans of what a wonderful gift of music this man contributed to the world. His music is like a warm fragrant summer breeze that makes you happy to be alive.....and also reminds you how frail and precious life can be. It is his first venture into a 'full' rock band and rock album, yet still retains the spiritual feel and lyrical content of his previous albums, to a degree. It probably is his best album from a critic's and the average listening public's point of view; Commercially his best album in the States, while scoring a top ten hit with 'Bang A Gong'. 'Cosmic Dancer' is a revelation, 'Bang A Gong' is his signature song and a terrific rocker that is subtle and explosive at the same time, 'Jeepster' is Marc Bolan doing 50's rock and roll with fuzz and is so cool!'Planet Queen' could have been a huge hit I'm sure...'Life's A Gas' has such a classic hook and a winner as well as sad too...'Monolith' is so 'pre' 'Dark Side Of The Moon' sounding, and actually is as good as anything on that album (Floyd is awesome though).'Girl' reminds me of John Lennon, and even more of a style Bowie would take on, and is a beautiful song.'Rip Off' is like something off from a Stones album from that time period, yet all Bolan!'The Motivator' is a catchy song with a good driving force, 'Mambo Sun' is the great opener and mood setter for the album,'Lean Woman Blues' is a great "happy" blues song, and almost a live, written on the spot kind of song!
To sum it up, get this album- it's classic and takes you to another plane of consciousness if you let it!
Vintage glam rock classic.......2007-05-13
Thank you for the CD. This classic piece of rock history came to me in great shape and in a timely manner. This second copy was for a friend. He loved it as much as I do. Thank you.
THE ELECTRIC WARRIOR!!!.......2007-05-12
"The Electric Warrior" is an album which was created at the beginning
of the English Glam Rock movement ."The Electric Warrior" served as
a template for Mott the Hoople and David Bowie .Marc Bolan combined
acoustic guitar work and classical orchestration with electric guitar
riffs .The result of that combination is the tour de force known as
"The Electric Warrior ".Poetic lyrics written by Marc Bolan augment
the melodious sounds .Bonus tracks such as "Hot Love" and "Raw Ramp"
make this superior magnum opus even better .Flo and Eddie of "The
Turtles" are Marc Bolan's background vocalists on this album !Buy the Rhino version of this album .
Extremely Underappreciated.......2007-03-21
This album should really be considered one of the great classics of rock, but seems to often be overlooked. Many people seem to have either never heard of T. Rex, to mistake them for some 80's band (I have no idea what they are talkign about), or to only know "Bang a Gong." This album literally has no clunkers; every track is essential. Next to Bowie's indispensable glam albums, this is the best of the genre and really some of the best rock recorded. The orchestration always works, never coming off as too slick etc., and the guitar is really killer. There are great riffs and tasty solos. Several of these songs, such as the hits "Jeepster" and "Bang a Gong,' and the superb should be classic "Mambo Sun" are simply iresistibly groovin' tracks that make you want to get up and move. "Rip Off," the album's closer is an amazing track as well, almost a jazzish punk track, that rocks hard. Really though, any songs that I didn't mention, were omitted for the sake of this review's brevity; in all honesty, every track is not merely enjoyable, but vital, carefully crafted, and simply tremendous. Do not hesitate to get this album; you will be glad you've discovered T. Rex if this is your first exposure to the group, they were a real treasure that's never been appreciated quite the way they deserved (especially Bolan).Few albums are more enjoyable than this one.
One of the most influential albums of the 1970's.......2006-06-04
In my opinion, T.Rex is one of the most underated bands of all time. I also belive this is one of the greatest rock n' roll albums of all time. Next to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, this is the most difinitive album of the Glam Rock era. Every song is great, and the extras make the album even better. Marc Bolan was a true musical genious, and one of the great forgotten artists. I would recomend this to any fan of old school rock.

5 stars in my Beard and I feel real weird..................2006-11-07
I feel very privileged to have gotten this album for Christmas from my Mother. She had asked the guy at the record store what to get a young teenage boy. Thanks to that clerk, I listened to this album for almost a full year before it hit big in America. I wore the vinyl out listening to these songs with great hooks and mysterical lyrics. My older brothers friends would make fun of me as I listened to Electric Warrior in my room.Boy, were they wrong!
Today, the songs on this album really hold up. To think that "Get it On" had to be renamed as "Bang a Gong" because it was too racy for the USA is mind-boggling. I think "Mambo Sun" could have been a big hit, and "Jeepster" is a good song."Motivator" is bouncy and "Planet Queen" has a cool cosmic feel to it.I think the US wasn't ready for the kind of lyrics Marc Bolan wrote. They were ahead of their time. Whenever I hear "Bang a Gong" on the the radio, I think of my Mother, and how cool it was to get an unknown album(at the time) that had one of the greatest songs on it(Bang a Gong)that also became one of my favorite albums of all-time! And how cool is that album cover?!
One of the more excellent albums of all time.......2005-02-01
Let me start by saying this, if you do not own this album, purchase it right away. If you do, nice job, on owning a fantastic album.
Now, what stops us from classifying this album with the greatest of all time, like Dark Side, Blonde On Blonde, Sgt Peppers, and Pet Sounds. Was it because people don't think of Marc Bolan/T.Rex as a great musician/musicians. But, as clearly shown in this album, they could be. I think the only thing that lacks in this album, which ultimately makes it less of a great album than, say Beggars Banquet, is variety. It does not contain many styles and genres of music, unlike some of the greatest artists, greatest albums. But, look at the tracks:
1. Mambo Sun
2. Cosmic Dancer
3. Jeepster
4. Monolith
5. Lean Woman Blues
6. Bang A Gong (Get It On)
7. Planet Queen
8. Girl
9. The Motivator
10. Life's A Gas
11. Rip off
Are these 11 songs not great enough to be classified with the best. I'm sorry, they are. And T.Rex's "reckless" style of RockNRoll, as they called it, sure managed to make a great great album, that should be in everyone's collection.
Starting you off with the nice, upbeat mambo sun. Then comes the dreamy and lovely Cosmic Dancer.
The fast paced Jeepster. My personal favorite, Lean Woman Blues is the 5th track. #6, has an amazing beat, which caused it to be their most famous song. The nice song, Girl, and the great Life's A Gas. Then, ending with another great song, Rip Off, a song just listing, crazy bad things happening. But, still with great guitar riffs in the backround.
You can't tell me every song on here is not great, because I will disagree. This is one of those rare albums, like Rubebr Soul, in which every song is superb.
Ageless Masterpiece.......2004-09-28
I had been listening to The Beatles and Led Zep as a ten year old due to my older brothers record collection, but this is the album that got me hooked on music. The combination of cool rock and mysticism just blew my young mind away! This record made me feel sexy before I even new what sex was! I dont bellieve that there is another album that sounds quite like this one, and it probably ranks as the bands best.No other act has quite been able to capture the T.Rex/Marc Bolan sound and listening to this album, it is easy to see why.It deserves to be ranked with the best classic rock releases of the early 70s and has stood the test of time, thanks to Bolans amazing songs and Tony Viscontis production skills. An album to indulge your senses!

Electric Warrior (1971.)
T. Rex, AKA Mark Bolan, never became wildly popular here in the United States, in that he only scored only one major hit here. That was a real shame, because all of Bolan's music was excellent. He had released a few albums before this, and would release a few after, but most fans are in agreement that Electric Warrior stands as Bolan's finest achievement. Are those fans right, or is Electric Warrior just an overrated album? Read on for my review.
To put it simply, anyone who calls this the finest album that T. Rex ever released is correct. All of Bolan's work is excellent, but on this album, he reaches an unparalleled level of excellence he would never again reach. In other words, this is a masterpiece among masterpieces. 1971 was a solid year for classic rock releases, (The Who's Who's Next, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, Jethro Tull's Aqualung, Alice Cooper's Love It To Death and Killer, the list goes on...) but Electric Warrior, while never as popular as many of those other releases of the year, is nothing less in the quality department. Rather obviously, Bolan's biggest hit (and his ONLY hit in Anerica), Bang A Gong (Get It On) can be found on this album. With its catchy lyrics and impressive guitar work, it's no wonder this song has gone down in history as a classic rock masterpiece. But that's just one of the eleven songs this album has to offer. Just one. There are ten underrated masterpieces here, just waiting to be discovered by new listeners. The songs explore a plethora of stylings, rockers and ballads alike. From start to finish, Bolan and his backing band do not fail to please.
THIS TEXT REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE AMERICAN 2003 REISSUE. This is, needless to say, T. Rex's most popular album. It seemed only fitting that it be remastered and rereleased in America, and in 2003 that happened. But we got more than just a remaster - we got a ton of bonus tracks too! These tracks are hard to come by, and one of them is previously unreleased! There's even an interview! It's a five star album without the bonuses, but they're like the icing on the cake.
What more can I say? Bolan set out to create a rock and roll masterpiece, and he did just that! Though it is often overlooked in favor of 1971's more popular classic rock albums, it is no less excellent. Sadly though, just a few years after this album's release, Bolan was killed in a car accident. Fortunately, his masterpiece of an album from 1971 stands the test of time. If you want Bolan to live again, that's tough luck. But you can come close to it by buying this album! I don't think you'll be disappointed if you like classic rock.
All Hail The Cadillac King!.......2003-04-22
Picture it: the year 2002 is winding down and a very bored 22 year old is still searching in vain for that one cd that will overwhelm her this year. You know what I mean, at least once a year you find that cd that you just cannot live without, that one you listen to with such ferocity that even your friends know most of the songs 'cause every mixed tape you give them includes this certain album's output. In years past it's been The X Ray Spex, Marianne Faithful, Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, The Smiths, The Cure, Iggy and The Stooges, Billie Holiday, Bikini Kill, The Slits, The Raincoats, The Clash, The Specials, Madness, The Sex Pistols, Le Tigre and...well, you can see that I'm not at a loss for bands to become devoted to. Which brings me back to the end of last year. The Faint was good, Ladytron was good, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes, The Hives and everyone else of their ilk were good but...what's missing? I picked up the album Electric Warrior 'cause I had heard Bang A Gong a couple of days earlier on the radio and had always wanted to check out T Rex. Before I even got to the second track I must have played Mambo Sun about 10 times. Seriously, I had no expectations whatsoever of this album and I couldn't believe that the first song had grabbed me by the throat and threatend to throttle me within an inch of my life. In the days and weeks that followed Electric Warrior became part of my daily routine. Each day would start and end with selections from Electric Warrior. I have read some of the reviews that say this album sounds dated but I beg to differ. The weird imagery and inventive riffs make the album sound like something that sprang from a lo-fi indie label in the late 80's. I think that this album takes the hearer completely by surprise if they don't know what to expect. About a month after I started adoring Electric Warrior I went to visit my close friend who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn which is a teaming with art students and young boho types. While sitting in a fairly hip little coffee shop just down the street from her house one of the baristas took out whatever ambient music had gone largely ignored by my ears and put in what I recognized as the first strains of Mambo Sun. I couldn't believe that my new favorite band was being played in a different state by someone close to my own age in a cool little coffee shop. I resolved to strike up a conversation with barista boy with great taste in music as the last strains of Cosmic Dancer faded into oblivion. Using a refill as an excuse I ambled up to the counter and thus discovered that the little beggar was also a recent T Rex convert who, through the same trick of fate as me only knew the band through Get It On and whos musical tastes had led him to his newest, greatest discovery which just happened to coincide with my own. No guff, this really happend and though I'm in no way inplying that purchasing this album is going to lead you to finding romance with a spikey haired coffee boy in Brooklyn I am saying that some other life altering stuff will come your way 'cause there's no way that you could listen to an album this good and not have it effect your life for the better. Ok, enough hearts and flowers go out and buy this and then buy The Slider. What more can I say? I love you Mark!-

Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone, but what a guitarist.......2007-03-07
I felt prompted to write when I read the "editorial review" provided by amazon--"26 tracks of acoustical jams"?!?!? Obviously the reviewer never listened to any of this outrageously over-the-top guitar masterpiece. "Angry Candy," "Marriage of Figaro," and "Plymouth Rock" are some of the electric highlights; however, there ARE a lot of great acoustic tunes as well. I had forgotten until I recently re-listened to this recording how astonishing some of Cordola's acoustic work is. He is so precise and clean while rampaging all over the guitar at hyper-drive speed. Sort of a Christian combination of Yngwie Malmsteen and Al Dimeola, if you can imagine such a hybrid. It isn't for everyone, mainly because there's some interesting jazz, pop, classical, even country, but all blended into what is primarily a LOUD HARD METAL recording ("acoustical jams," indeed!). It's an added plus just to hear how much fun Cordola has goofing off on the many shorter pieces as well. They don't really go anywhere musically, but you don't feel cheated because of the many longer jaw-dropping solos scattered throughout the recording. The few songs with vocals are okay, but they wouldn't be the reason you'd buy this. However, let me give one complaint--what a letdown (mainly because of the criminally lousy production) was Cordola's follow-up recording "Of Riffs and Symphonies." What on earth happened? But THIS wonderfully produced recording is a work of guitar genius--not a word I throw around lightly.
Great Electric/Acoustic Instrumental Album!.......2005-01-03
I bought this CD when it was released in 1991. It was one of my first CDs and earned a lot of play when I was in college. I hadn't listened to it in years as I have over 400 CDs. I had forgotten just how good it really is!
Lanny's "Cover" of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro is inspired and really shows how a classical piece can be reinvented with electric guitar!
Although many of the pieces are short 2:00 or less, they are played with passion. The longer pieces, Angry Candy, When Shiloh Comes, Figaro, Plymouth Rock (Awesome!), Jabberwocky... There are more are well worth the price of a CD.
I wish this CD were a little less pricey now, but if you can pick-up a reliable used copy, you just gotta' buy it!

Too cool.......1999-12-24
This album, with it's catchy beats, Indian humor and fiery pride, is just too cool. Russell's poetic sayings are nicely back-dropped with effects of thunder, wind and rain, as well as music. The tune 'Indian Car' will make you chuckle and the tune 'Hey You - Hey Indian' will make you reflect. A wide range of Indian issues is dealt with by a man with considerable insight. Check it out- it's too cool....

Customer Reviews:
Great reissue of a classic album.......2002-06-26
Terrific remaster by Tony Visconti of this classic album. I have no idea what the negative reviewers are talking about; there is no "drop out" on Mambo Sun. The cover art was never much to begin with, even on the original album - and I have an original US copy of the album, thanks. The poster shot of Bolan from the album is not here, and yes, the lack of lyrics is slightly disappointing. However, you get priceless notes on the recording of the album from Tony Visconti. There are also extra photos of Marc and the band, and the illustrations from the album's inner paper sleeve (hey, we didn't get that in America!!). To me this makes up for the lack of lyrics. I know them all by heart anyway.
Enough of that; what you should be worried about is the sound. The sound is absolutely terrific. I compared this with my Japanese CD and the difference was night and day. It was as if a layer of fog had been lifted from the music; everything is sharp and clear. I was surprised at how much of Bill Legend's drum parts and Steve Currie's bass I had been missing out on all these years! And the peculiar details of Marc's guitar playing really come into focus. (Make sure you check the liner notes for Visconti's comments on Bolan's musical quirks.)
Of course the album itself is a classic. How can you argue with a CD that has both "Get it On" and "Jeepster," both brilliant 70's rock songs? Not to mention Bolan's mystical eldritch side, encapsulated in "Cosmic Dancer," and "Monolith." And the wistful "Life's A Gas," the charmingly inept "Lean Woman Blues," and "Rip Off," which is still pretty strange today; all this adds up to a great album, then and now. Bolan both invented and transcended "glam rock" on Electric Warrior.
The bonus tracks sound equally good, but are mostly useful for T. Rex fans like me, who want to hear what the songs were like when Bolan was working out the details in the studio with the band. It sounds like recording this album was a lot of fun. Bolan laughs and kids around a lot, and as a result the bonus tracks convey his innate charm and enthusiasm. The outtakes also show us interesting stripped-down alternate versions of familiar songs, some with alternate lyrics.
Overall, this 30th Anniversary reissue is highly recommended. Bolan's albums have not always gotten the best treatment in the past when they were reissued on CD, but Visconti's remix is a must-have, and worthy of Marc Bolan's legacy.
Buy the Japanese version!.......2002-05-26
My friend bought this version and the drop-out on Mambo Son stinks.......it sets the tone for disapointment. The lack of lyrics bites too. I bought the Japanese import for 25 bucks and this thing rocks. It includes a picture disk with album style slip case. The slip case, per the original album, has the lyrics on the back and includes a album sleeve just like an album. Plus thier is another booklet with seperate lyrics as well. It also includes a fold up mini poster of the original artwork from inside the lp with Marc in his chair. Another booklet has Tony's pictures and notes on the album. The sound quality is on par with todays digital recordings, which is excellent. The Japanese sure know thier way around recording equipment.
save your money.......2002-03-19
Tony Visconti failed at recording of this excellent music, and now he failed at remastering again...
T-Rex never sounded better.......2002-03-03
If you want to hear T-Rex the way they haven't sounded in years "buy this album"! The sound quality of this CD makes it worth the price of admission! George Marino and Tony Visconti did a great job remastering tapes that are almost 30 years old. The drum sound, especially the opening kick and snare drum on "Get It on" never sounded better and Marc's guitar sound hasn't sounded this good in years.
If you want crisp original artwork and lyrics, pull out your old A&M record sleeve, or look for the album in the bargain bins because it isn't here. A&M did a poor job replicating the front cover artwork (my inkjet scanner/printer at home could have done a better job!) and the inside gatefold of the original album (no lyrics or original picture of Marc).
A&M did add excellent liner notes from producer/arranger Tony Visconti and pictures and drawings of Marc that have never seen the light of day until now.
The extra tracks are great to listen to, but it would have been even better if they could have added "Raw Ramp",(the B-side of "Get It On") to round things out.
Still, the audio clarity and punch of this re-mastered CD make it a must-have for any T-Rex fan.
OK.......2002-01-09
Like the other reviews, I was dissapointed somewhat by this 30th anniversary edition. First off the artwork! The front cover photo is obviously a poor reproduction (check the original and cheaper Reprise release for proof). No lyrics! Pretty lame candids provided by Visconti. Now the sound. The guitars sound like the treble went sky high, the bass is rubling like a bass pounding low rider. As if the mastering board EQ was on the brink! The only pleasure of this release is the bonus tracks complete with t-rex and crew banter.

Old-Time Mandel.......1999-12-17
A Great hard rocking piece from the older style of Harvey Mandel. Mainly instrumental - jam format. LOTS and LOTS of guitar! Some very psychedelic, processed sounds. Sounds like an updated version of "The Snake". Last song a short vocal spoof on candy bars that has very suggestive lyrics. It's actually hilarious and well thought out!
