Amazon.com's Best of 1998

For 1998, Mercury Rev did something completely different: they shunned the psychedelic rock of their previous ways and went for baroque. Literally. On Deserter's Songs, bowed saw plays as prominent a role as guitar, and most of the songs are ballads, not anthems. There's a tender, folksy quality here that was missing in the group's previous (albeit also great) recordings. Mercury Rev have always been difficult to classify; yet on this album they make the pigeonholing even more difficult. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com

Years before the slacker-minstral chic of the Elephant Six Collective (Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Apples in Stereo, et al.) strummed their way into left-of-the-dial fame, Mercury Rev were busy composing their own psychedelic soundtracks for nothing in particular. It seems as though we've heard it all before: lo-fi is predictable, the musical saw is downright ubiquitous (yeah, it shows up on Deserter's Songs) in indie rock, and the mellotron's chords are all too common. Yet despite the trendy instrumentation, Deserter's Songs is anything but predictable. "Tonite It Shows" is a mysterious lullaby, "Opus 40" is trippy keyboard sing-along, and "Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp" has more Stereolab pop than Son House Delta blues. It's one of Mercury Rev's most unique and consistent efforts. A subdued yet rewarding trip. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, with Saw.......2006-06-18

From the first notes of this record you know that you are listening to something new and unique, to wit, a saw. Who else has put the saw to such exquisite use in popular music? OPUS 40 is a rock sculpture near Woodstock, NY, created by a sole man over a lifetime's work in his backyard. My girlfriend took me to that place ten years ago. How nice to see it remembered here in a song by the same name. That is one of the more traditional songs on this record, but I'm drawn to the odder ones upon repeated listenings. Impossible to categorize, unique, strangely affecting, this is the band's breakout record and masterpiece, although "Secret Migration" comes close.

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked dream pop classic - this is highly appealing and I think most people will love it!.......2006-01-09

Mercury Rev is absolutely an overlooked band - like My Morning Jacket, they truly deserve to be big. If you've listened to previous Mercury Rev albums, you'll notice that this is completely different sounding. It's distinctly their style, but they've ventured off into dream pop land. I think singer David Baker's vocals are much more suited to this style of music as he has a very charismatic and dreamy vocal style. It most certainly enhances the music. The musicianship is extremely well done as everything is clear and pretty, well, "dreamy" (along with standard instruments they also use harps, for example). Though not every song is slow and mellow like the first two, they're all still very fun and interesting to listen to. No other band in the world right now sounds like Mercury Rev. The lyrics are also pretty memorable and worthy of close-attention. It's just a very creative and original album. Basically, everything about this album and their other classic "All Is Dream" (though this one not as much) is just fabulous. Most people will love this album! Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars Give it a chance... or you'll be sorry.......2005-04-16

The 1st time that I listened to Deserter's Song I thought "What the &*## is this?". My Wife, who I figured would hate it because of the unusual, even shaky, vocals walks in 3 days later and says, "That Mercury Rev albumn is great!". Again I am thinking "What the &*##?". I Gave it another try and fell in love with it. I have been a huge Sparklehorse fan for years and if I had to squeeze Mercury Rev into the same genra.

Deserter's song is very quickly rising to the top of my all time albumns and is definately worth a listen and then another and another and another...

4 out of 5 stars Hazy.......2005-04-10

this album is definitely dreamy. There are no huge moments but a a steady slight twinge of light guitars and flowing orchstral sounds fronted by a quiet band. It reminds me of what Mr. Mackey on Southpark would hears inside his head. Hmm-kay?

3 out of 5 stars Mercury Rev - 'Deserter's Songs' (V2).......2005-03-04

This is the band's fourth effort.Mercury Rev,at least on this CD reportedly changed from noisy psychededlia over to dream pop with more(how do I put it?)showy arraingements. In this case,it isn't all that bad of a choice.Tracks I thought were better are "Tonite It Shows","Holes","The Funny Bird" and "Endlessly".Also sort of liked the straight-laced "Goddess On A Highway".If you're in the mood for some new/er music that you might've not gotten to hear yet, this CD is a decent find.

4 out of 5 stars New, unusual and significant sonatas from the early to mid seventies.......2007-01-30

This collection stems from three Grenadilla LPs, two recorded in 1978 and one ten years later. Grenadilla GS-1032 contained Husa's 1972 violin and piano sonata, and back then violinist Elmar Oliveira was still the recent winner of the famous Tchaikovsky competition, and first American fiddler to do so. It was paired with Pamela Layman's aleatoric "Gravitation 1". The 1975 second piano sonata appeared a few months later on GS-1025 with works by Ingolf Dahl (Sonata da Camera for clarinet & piano) and David Diamond (Vocalises for soprano & viola). There was a nearly contemporary recording of the sonata, published on a Golden Crest LP with a more coherent coupling of Husa's 1943 sonatina, first piano sonata from 1949 and 1957 Elegy, all played by Mary Ann Covert, but it has not been reissued on CD. The Moravian songs were recorded and published in 1988 on GSC 1073, coupled with Alan Hovhaness' "O Lady Moon" for soprano, clarinet and piano and Walter Piston's violin and piano sonata from 1939. Astounding to think that as far as 1988 there were still labels who insisted on publishing only on LP.

In the sonatas, Husa's musical language is entirely contemporary. He uses a vast array of modern playing techniques, giving the pieces much color if not always very remarkable structural coherence: ostinati, repeated notes, plucked piano strings, clusters struck with depressed sustaining pedal, creating piano harmonics (Schoenberg was the first to use that effect), playing in the highest and lowest registers, sliding tones, quarter-tones and harmonics on the violin. The piano writing is oftentimes reminiscent of Crumb, whose unique compositional personality comes precisely from the coloristic effects borne from the use of such techniques. The violin effects sometimes evoke the masterful "Caprices" of Salvatore Sciarrino - actually written a few years later. Architecturally, both pieces pay some tribute to sonata form by broadly following a fast-slow-fast construction and contrasting moods within each movement. The playing seems fully authoritative, the sound is entirely up-to-date.

Husa is quoted by the liner notes saying "it is difficult to add something new, unusual and, hopefully, significant... Yet, newer ways always arise." Well, in the case of the two compositions, they have.

The 12 Moravian Songs come from an earlier period of Husa's compositional life and inhabit an entirely different stylistic universe. They were written in 1955 after authentic Moravian folk songs remembered by Husa, who hardly changed the melodic line but added a discreet piano part of his own. Pleasant though hardly memorable, they are here finely sung by Barbara Ann Martin in stylish English translations by Ruth Martin.

As customary with New World Records, excellent notes, with selective bibliography and discography.

Album Description

V2 Australia assembled a two-fer of All Is Dream from 2001 and Deserter's Songs from 1998 (yes, in reverse order), presenting a strange mirror image. The former album (Deserter's Songs) is a luxuriant, elegant ride through orchestral arrangements, expansive songwriting, and lush production while the latter's shambolic, playful, and multi-textural vibe is utterly idiosyncratic and off-kilter. For those who have neither album, this is a wondrous ride into nether-pop's accessible yet wonderfully strange sonic universe. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All is dreamy in "Songs".......2005-07-06

Mercury Rev is not like other rock bands. Nowhere to be found is either punky catchiness or moody depression, that bands like Travis and the Futureheads have made a living off of. Instead, as shown in the "Deserter's Songs/All Is Dream" two pack, they prefer symphonic rock'n'roll with a fairy tale twist.

"Deserters' Song" is their crowning jewel so far: a dark, bluesy album full of dreams, moonlit sands, leaving behind the city, and love that you're losing. None of that sounds terribly interesting -- that's where the music kicks in. A delicate, expansive, polished sound, full of epic sound sweeps, smashing drums and bass, and mournful vocal calls, although it's broken by a by some lo-fi pop, and an acid-jazzy song.

"All Is Dream" is an appropriate name for the follow-up. It's not as expansive and impressive as the previous album, eschewing epic misery in favor of a fantastical, happier pop sound. Eerie sound effects echo over the tight melodies, and the songs are less grounded in reality -- there are vague visions of running over "snakelike" paths, constellations, pharoahs, dragons and much more.

Mercury Rev is one of those bands that really can't be compared to anything but itself. The closest I can come to a comparison is that they sound like the soundtrack to an unusually good fantasy movie. While they occasionally have dud moments (what is up with the acid jazz and twee pop?), most of the time they are spot-on.

Which one is better? It depends on the standards. Some may prefer the expansive, melancholy sound of "Songs," while others might love the fantasy edge of "All Is Dream," despite its less epic sound. Both are definitely above standard, however, with exquisitely complex music and well-written songwriting.

Basic instruments like guitar, bass, piano and drums are backed up with everything needed to create that eerie, epic sound: chamberlin strings, mellotron, wurtlitzer, harpsichord, flute and clarinet. But be forewarned: Jonathan has a high, somewhat nasal voice that isn't quite in tune with the music. It takes some getting used to.

"Deserter's Songs" and "All Is Dream" are two of the best albums by Mercury Rev, melding their lush melancholy with their fantastical dreams. Good stuff.
