Album Description

This began as a thank you from Tim to Rancid fans, to be released one track at a time on the Internet to tide fans over until the next Rancid full-length. But when KROQ in LA began heavily playing the explosive track, "Into Action", plans changed. So here's Armstrong's first solo release, backed by some of the strongest radio support since the days of "Time Bomb" and "Ruby Soho". With a killer old-school two-tone groove, helped along by Hellcat label mates The Aggrolites, "A Poet's Life" is loose, punky, infectious, and shamelessly danceable. Bonus DVD features videos of every song and a cool featurette on the making of the album and videos.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Goes Roots.......2007-07-03

This won't be long winded... This album is great, it's fun and done very well. It's a perfecrt record for this summer. Reggae goes great in the heat... Buy this now, thank me later.

1 out of 5 stars Punk is dead.......2007-06-28

I was so excited to see Tim Armstrong had a new CD out. I love Rancid. I bought Boxcar Racer and the Transplants because he was on them. But don't expect anything even close to any of that. It's a slow, boring mixture of reggae, steel drums, horns, and more reggae. I think 6 of the 10 songs start out exactly the same, the other 4 begin and you wonder if its going to be a Billy Joel song. His voice just isn't fitting to the music being played.
He sings about Rock and Roll and Punk but never plays any.
It makes you wonder is this really him and he's been fooling us for all those years? Poetry it is not.

4 out of 5 stars Tim Armstrong shows his reggae side.......2007-06-19

I've been a big fan of The Aggrolites for a while and a Op Ivy and Rancid fan for much longer. I heard a couple of these tracks on the website before this was an actual album. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon right away and say this is amazing. The reggae music is awesome and really makes this worthwhile courtesy of The Aggrolites, but Tim as a solo vocalist is pretty disappointing. When he's with Lars and Rancid he can be amazing, but on some of the tracks on this album he sounds a little like he's trying to be raggaetone which is weird (especially on Into Action).

As far as comparisons to Op Ivy, I'm not sure you can even make a comparison. Op Ivy was extremely punky, fast and skacore. Not like this album at all. I would compare this one to Rancid's Life Won't Wait album a lot more easily than Op Ivy.

I'm glad he leaves out the gangster stuff he was getting into with the Transplants. There is definitely some Clash influence on this album. Overall, if you want a good pick-me-up reggae/ska album with some Tim Armstrong spirit pick this up.

2 out of 5 stars A non groupie review...what a concept.......2007-06-15

The first three songs on this album are really song. Great reggae and ska inspired tunes, reminiscent of Op IVY. I can even overlook that Tim is singing with a pop punk teenager on "into action" and enjoy the tune. What I can't over look is that the album really falls apart after the first three songs. The rest of the album sound like demos...or transplants outtakes. Pretty disappointing. I love ska, punk, and reggae, but these are dull tunes. The only song I can stand on the rest of the album is "among the dead" and that's because it hints at an OP Ivy reunion. I can only hope after hearing this record....

4 out of 5 stars Now this is a surprise..........2007-06-14

It's been quite a while since a Rancid record (or a Rancid side project record) hasn't dissapointed me. The two Transplants records bored me, the second Lars Frederickson solo record embarassed me and "Indestructible" gave me the sense of deja vu that only having heard "Life Won't Wait" or "...and out come the wolves" could illict.
So when I heard that Tim Armstong was releasing a solo record I merely shrugged it off and went on about my day. Then I heard that he was giving it away for free, one song at a time, on his website(like that was gonna happen). So after hearing the first two tracks, the excellent "Wake Up" and "Hold On", my interest grew a little. And while Armstrong decided not to give the whole thing out on his website(again, not really a big surprise), when I saw it in stores recently I decided to give it a shot.
"A Poet's Life" will surprise anyone who is expecting a record that sounds like Rancid. While Rancid always had a ska/ reggae vibe to many of their songs they always backed them up with a a harder, more '77 vibe that is lacking from this record. This record is straight up reggae/ ska which is actually the smartest move that Armstrong could've made as it gives "A Poet's Life" a laid back, melodic, off the cuff groove that is infectious and impossible to resist. This record sounds like it was a lark, something fun to make while hanging out with one's friends, and that vibe is felt by listener.
Every track on "A Poet's Life" is strong, even if not every song is amazing. The first four songs--- the aforementioned "Wake Up" and "Hold On", the nearly perfect "Into Action" and the roots sounding "Translators"--- set the tone a little too well, as the songs that follow fail to keep the same energy and songwritting level. Also, like the last few records, Armstrong's lyrics are fairly spotty, though vocally he's never been in better form than he is here.
So "A Poet's Life" isn't perfect? Who expected it to be? But what "A Poet's Life" is fun, entertaining, melodic, energetic, brief and engaging. It's everything that you want and more.
Welcome back Tim. It's good to have ya back.

Just as Green Day aped the Ramones, their contemporaries in this Southern California punk quartet aspired to be the Clash. But also like Green Day, Rancid's fresh approach and excellent songs (including the ska-punk MTV hit "Time Bomb" and the anthemic "Roots Radicals") rose far above tribute-band level. And poet Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries) adds spoken-word stream-of-consciousness to the dour "Junkyman." While 19 songs makes this 1995 CD drag on a bit too long, Wolves is evidence of punk rock's relevance a full two decades after the Sex Pistols. --Steve Knopper

5 out of 5 stars One of the best .............2007-04-16

Just a great CD packed full of great punk songs. Sure the guy has a voice like a blown motor but it only adds to the brillance of their songwriting ability as it doesn't need to sound good to be good.

The album does not have any duds on it although I think Junkie Man is probably the weakest track and that in itself ain't too bad....

The highlights for me are: 'Olympia WA', 'Lock step and Gone', 'Daly City Train', 'Listed MIA', 'As wicked' and 'The Wars End'. The bass introduction to 'Journey to the End of the East Bay' is an absolute classic and one of my fav basslines along with 'Guns of Brixton' for punk genre.

I think the best thing about Rancid (and previously the Clash) is that they take you on a journey with their lyrics...they are honest, realistic and punchy...I never get sick of listening to this and this CD is my first pick on my i-pod when I have to fly....

If you are thinking what album to buy next ..buy this..it is pure quality and a deadset classic!!!

5 out of 5 stars AARRRRRRGH!!!!.......2007-02-17

RANCID ROCKS!!!! GREAT FOR TRAINING AT THE GYM. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO BREAK STUFF.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-02-16

...And Out Come The Wolves is a GREAT album. I'm not going to analyze it and talk about how silly yet historical punk mucic is, but Rancid is a great band, and this is a great CD. By the way, if you ever get a chance to see Rancid live, DO IT. best show I have ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars PUNK? IT"S BASIC ROCK AND THAT'S WHY I LIKE IT!.......2007-01-15

Despite the mohawks, the fake Brittish accents, the tattoos, the sneering and the corny lyrics you nonetheless still have the foundation for a good rock band.

It is easy to analyze Rancid in that they have effectively stole all of the essential elements from the 1970's punk bands. The aching vocals of the Clash, the crunch of the Sex Pistols, the bottom heavy sound of the Jam, the thick-toned ska of Madness and the sneer of Generation X to make a gumbo of the ingredients from the best of the past.

Is it a rip off? Maybe.

But, on the other hand, most music is derivative. If you consider punk a serious and historical form of music then it has to have an influence on other artists 30 years later.

Most or all of the great punk bands burned themselves out. With the exception of the Clash, none of them had any longitivity.

Rancid took the best elements of this coveted music and, essentially, did it better. They applied better songwriting, better musicianship, better production, more substance in the songwriting, etc.

It is silly to call it punk. Punk from the 70's was a reaction to the "fat" in the music business and lean times for the economic period. There are no poltical issues to substantially affect them.

I find this to be a good and enduring work. There are a lot of songs on this disc with a variety of styles. So much keeps on coming at you, song or after song.

Not everything is great but there are some quality, I mean killer, tunes here."Maxwell Murder" has a killer bass solo. "Roots Radicals" falls into a throbbing groove. "Time Bomb" is great and musically muscular ska rune. "Olympia WA" employs heartfelt and crackling voclas. "Lock Step" sounds like an amped up gospel song with it's call and response chorus. "Ruby, Soho" is a bit of power pop, the most commercial sounding song on the cd.

If the image of the band was that of just 4 normal looking poeple, I feel that the music would have received more accolades.

It is a quality work from a good band. Musically, theiy are doing a lot more here than even their 1970's muses. This is far from perfect but definitely a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-11-10

rap, hip-hop, urban, soul, techno, and today's wannabe rock all can be compared to the juice that collects at the bottom of the trash can. This band is amazingly brilliant and this is one of their better albums... lars frederiksen's band is pretty good too. John,Scott, and Mike are all really gay though!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly my favorite Rancid album........2007-03-30

Rancid are a band I've been aware of for a long time but only REALLY started paying attention to in recent years. I actually had this burned for awhile, and I didn't realize that I didn't take to it as much as I have now! But what makes this record so great? The songs! Punk has never been about technical ability, and I always found that a little refreshing really, but Rancid may have their big '77 punk influence here, there's also kind of a style of their own on here. In fact, this record was too good for the mainstream to ignore, and it even got some MTV play and gave 'em more sales. Perfect timing too, as them and the Offspring were some of the biggest bands on Epitaph.

But it can appeal to the masses and has nice enough messages. The first album was recorded before Lars got into the band, and this one has his vocals on it. It's nice to hear the trade of his hard-edged and clear vocals and Tim's vocals which by contrast are more thin and less telligible. It's actually kind of charming. It's hard for me to pick my favorites between the first five songs, but those are not the only great tracks. Tracks like "Ghetto Box" and "Motorcycle Ride" stand out just as well. 23 songs takes awhile to fully adjust to, but once you're familiar, you won't want to stop listening to this. I am also very well aware of ...And Out Come The Wolves and Indestructible, which I enjoy. The other three I'm not quite as familiar with yet but they've all been at least four-star good with me by this point.

5 out of 5 stars Let's go-go-go!!!.......2006-08-13

I am a Clash fanatic who was tired of the lack of punk music from the 70's and early 80's. I saw Let's Go bought it and put it in my car CD player. I listened to it every day for a week and absolutely loved it. At first I was skeptical but man is it catchy. Some great songs and lyrics if you can understand them. But hey its not about clear vocals....The bas lines are awesome and almost rocka billy in some places but it all works. Classic tracks include Harry Bridges, Salvation, Radio and Nihilism but in a way all the songs have merit. I am still playing this CD on the way to work and it gets me ready for anything the day can bring on. I am glad that even an old punk rocker like myself can still be revved up by music.
Here is the tip...
Buy this CD...give it a few listens and I guarantee you will put it in your top 10 CD's to take to a desert island.
If only there was more music like this.

5 out of 5 stars Rancid's Best, Question about Earlier Post..........2006-07-11

to anybody reading this review new to rancid, get this album, along w/ wolves. really if you just think their okay, you could stop collecting their cd's. however if you really like them i suggest getting every album you can from them except maybe Indestructable...i downloaded that one.

onto just something i had to clear up...their was a post earlier where a man stated punk isnt about moping around and wearing black makeup...and hes absolutely right. so why did he post that on a rancid cd? and then he claimed to be the epitemy of punk, which already makes you unpunk, but this is stuff for another time...BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 90s punks.......2006-06-18

Rancid is definitely the best of all the punk acts that came out in the mid-nineties and this is one of their best albums. After listening to these tracks I wonder why any song has to be any longer than two minutes. Like most Rancid albums the first 2/3 is where the bulk of the best tracks lie, which are kind of Oi-punkish with the chant-a-long choruses, and oh, they're all catchy as hell. But since when was catchy a bad thing? People tend to discredit catchiness as if it were a signal of bad music, but while catchy is equivalent to pop, I don't think it hurts the music in any way.

I wrote this review mostly to stand up for Rancid, and to state that they are indeed very punk. They're third wave nineties punk, a class of punk in which pretty much every band had their...I guess you could call them "MTV moments." They all also wrote pretty accessible stuff. But you know, if you want hardcore you've got Dead Kennedys and Black Flag and if you want classic you've got The Clash and The Pistols. This is supposed to be different and it stands on its own as a really great punk record.

5 out of 5 stars I Want your salvation, Whoah Ohh!.......2006-04-19

This is hands down, Rancids best. It's got twentey three songs, and was their first to feature Lars, who added a whole new dimension to the band. i also love Tim's voice, its so wierd, it sounds as if he had a speach impediment, and you can't understand a word he says, but thats why Rancid rocks, but seriously, Rancid sucks d*ck at their instruments(except for Freeman)Tim cannot sing at all, and he sucks at guitar, same with Lars, and the drummer? please....but, i like em, cause they are catchy, not cause its kewl to listen to punx who cant play their instruments.....punk in general sucks, i hate punk, except for rancid and the clash, and a few others that i dont consider punk.....whoa, i got way off topic....anyway, get this disk..........................

Where Rancid's eponymous 2000 album saw the band attempting to re-seize the moral high ground by aping the hardcore sound of the early 1980s, Indestructible is a return to the eclectic mix of their own breakthrough album And Out Come the Wolves. Thus "Red Hot Moon" and "Memphis" are melancholy, Clash-inspired grooves, "Arrested in Shanghai" and "Back Up Against the Wall" are melodic pop rock, while "Out of Control" and "Born Frustrated" are screaming punk assaults. Their politics, naturally, remain sound, as evinced by "Ivory Coast" and the anti-violence anthem "Spirit of '87". --Dominic Wills

4 out of 5 stars Indestructible?.......2007-03-15

In spite a bigger production than before and distribution to Warner Bros., "Indestructible" is very much a Rancid record. And pretty much every sound you enjoyed from them is on here. It's not even that bad a starting point from the band. It wasn't intentional, but this was my first full album from the band (found this one at a local library). I enjoyed the variety of the tracks and the band's energy and execution through the record. There is even a few songs that show a more mature side of the group that wasn't even so much present on the predecessors.

How you enjoy the record will depend on what type of fan you are. If you were disappointed that LP5 was not enough in the more ska route of "Life," then I think you may find this as a slight redemption. However you slice it though, to say the whole thing's aggressive and/or the whole thing's soft is very much wrong. They do both of these things and more on the record.

The record starts (title tracks) and ends ("Otherside") with a bang. The first track in particular is one of their greatest songs ever written and performed. Then elsewhere you get some nice ska on the likes of "Red Hot Moon," hardcore on tracks like the awesome "Out of Control," and you'll be singing along with catchy tracks like "Spirit of '87" and "Born Frustrated," even with the politic-themed lyrics in both. The pop-rock tracks in "Start Now" and "Arrested in Shanghai" are something I hadn't heard before in Rancid, even after going through their back catalog. It adds a nice melodic side to them and is not totally edgeless, either.

Admittedly, there are a few tracks that they could've done without on the record, even if none were terrible. But they are sub-par tracks nonetheless. "Memphis" sounds just a bit too much like a re-hash "Journey to the End of East Bay" from their "...wolves" album, and I'd rather listen to that album if I were to listen to that song. "Roadblock" does nothing for me and is kind of boring.

Some people will argue that this is the band's weakest recording. I don't know about that, they haven't ever made less than a four-star album by my standards, so I guess I'd feel as though I were splitting hairs on that one. I think I like it a bit more than the eponymous debut though. This album has more mmph that that one didn't always have.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome..........2006-12-20

This is quite possibly Rancid's finest work. The musical depth and variety of this album is second only to Life Won't Wait. It takes you on a journey, with twists and turns of musical inspiration. I've been a Rancid junkie since I was 11 years old, almost 5 years later I can still listen to all of their stuff over and over and never be sick of it. Rancid is the kind of band that has music for any mood. If you're up for smashing things and running amuck, their first album is awesome. Feel like hearing about life on the street and friends of Rancid? Let's Go works there. Want an all around punk masterpeice? ...And Out Come the Wolves. Need some reggae? Life Won't Wait. Wanna go skate? Rancid 2000...Indestructable is an album you can really listen to and just soak the music in. Indestructable is some of Rancid's best.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2006-12-11

this isn't so much a punk record as it is a soulful and truly redeeming rock album. It seems like these guys were inspired by Lou Reed's "New York", but I could be wrong. I couldn't believe someone here actually thinks the Dropkick Murphies and Flogging Molly are "real" punk bands. I wouldn't call this "real" punk, or really even "punk" at all so much as just good rock music. for real punk, try listening to the Virus(RIP), Defiance, Cro-mags,lower class brats, the adicts, black flag, minor threat, the aplicators(pop candy, but still decent all-chick band), XXXdeathstarXX(hardcore), the scapegoats(johnson county's finest, and personal friends of mine), the unseen, old Varukers, GG Alline(america's most sincere transgressive artist and advocate of hate and misanthropy- RIP),etc...early norwegian black metal is also pretty cool because it embodies the DIY attitude, abrasive low-fi recording, and true hardcore values i.e. mayhem, darkthrone, and emperor.

3 out of 5 stars A little Destructible.......2006-10-15

Rancid has never made a bad album. But this is not Rancid's best album. Everything is (as I'm sure you've heard) very poppy. And it continues Rancid's experimental style which makes them such a brilliant band. It's not my favorite album but other than that it's okay (thus the 3/5).

4 out of 5 stars get over it.......2006-10-10

reading some peoples reviews on various items (including this album) just makes me realize how incredibly quick people are to judge a band based on their actions and not their music. first off i'd like to point out that rancid never actually signed an official recording contract with warner brothers. THey simply signed a distro deal. but that's besides the point..any band (or any person for that matter) that trys to say that they wouldn't wanna as much money as they could for doing what they love they are liars trying to garnish "punk points". I actually really liked this record. YOU cannot deny that "red hot moon" and "tropical london" are incredibly catchy. yes this album does have a bit more poppier feel to it then their previous work. But, I think this album is such a refreshing sound after the dissapoint of 2000. plus there's a song on here about "django" (the movie not that fat "mc" from skinnerbox). Oh, one last note. I have never really understood why people criticize album covers when writing revues.

Life Won't Wait bursts with a thrilling ambition. On Rancid's past albums, these Clash-via-Cali punks came on with an invigorating twin guitar attack that sounded like it wanted to take over the world--to set it free!--and their fourth release continues in this radical vein, insisting that "all people must rise and decide your fate." But there's newfound ambition in the music, too, as the band's raging attack is supplemented now by new sounds (rocksteady and rockabilly, even doo-wop and soul), new musical textures (the exhilarating "Crane Fist" features a piano battling a B3 organ), and new sources of inspiration, as the boys shout out for Salvadoran immigrants and brag like rappers in anthem after anthem of urgent, beautiful poetry. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars sellout schmellout.......2006-10-10

I would like to start by bringing up a point...(well other than my opinion of this album which is a whole nother point in itself) anyway...a lot of people write this album off because of the departure of the sound from "..and out come the wolves". but for some STRANGE reason you rarely hear anyone complain about the vast sound differences from "lets go" to "..and outcome the wolves". "Lets go" was fast straight up punk rock 21 (or is 22 or 23? i can't remember) tracks..in less than 45 minutes. "..and out come the wolves" was a VERY different album. more mid tempo songs...with a few ska numbers (no waynot ska from the guys who were in op ivy) and at times sounds a lot like the Clash. don't get me wrong i LOVE both these records. Now onto "life won't wait" I absolultely love this record. When i firt picked this up on vinyl back in 1997 I was not really sure what i was hearing. But the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. Over the years it has become my fav rancid album. It was a good range of a few musical styles straight up fast punk "warsaw" some mid tempo and slower punk songs "something in the world today" "1998" , "hoover st." some up beat ska "hooligans" a rockbailly influenced number "lady liberty" and some great reggae infleunced stuff "coppa de corzo", "awkward position" overall just fantastic...if you're looking for an album that is a lil more than just fast punk rock singing bout drinking, anarchy, and other fairly generic topics (which has it's place) this may not be the album for you..but if you're looking for something a lil different (who am i kidding? 90% of people reading probably already have or even own this record).

5 out of 5 stars Rancid's Best Album!.......2006-07-31

I think Life Won't wait is Rancid's best effort to date. It's almost like Rancid going back to the good ol' Operation Ivy days. Not that this CD sounds like an Op. Ivy CD(cause it doesn't), but I get this strange but comfortable feeling whenever I listen to Op. Ivy's music, and I get that same feeling on a few points of this album.
Despite what people say, this isn't a punk CD. Sure, there's a few punk tunes thrown in with this album. But overall, this is a ska/reggae album. Sure, there are songs that I don't like as much as others, but this is a really great CD. This albums features Rancid's very best songs, such as Bloodclot, Black Lung, Life Won't Wait, Hooligans, Crane Fist(it could either be the easiest song for you to get into, or the hardest (: ), Who Would've Thought, The Wolf, the amazing closer Coppers, and Something In the World Today, which is probably my favorite Rancid song.
Overall, if you're an Op. Ivy fan(like me), you might like this album. If you're a ska/reggae fan(like me), then you'll love this album!

4 out of 5 stars Tis a good one!.......2006-06-30

1st of all, it's a shame that Rancid had to "prove themselves" after thsi album and what's more a shame is that they FELT they HAD to. To me that borders on selling out. Selling out doesn't have to do with money.
With that aside, I love reggae and I love (real) punk rock. So of course, I like this album a lot. I'm not sure which is my favorite, this or ...And Out Come the Wolves. I think Wolves.
In regards to my 1st statement, I have listened to the 2000 ST album one time and haven't picked it up since. I'm sure i will at another time and I'm sure I'm now thought of a trendy Rancid listener. Grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Life Won't Wait = Modern Day Punk Rock Classic.......2006-06-09

Life Won't Wait

Before I begin my rant I should probably tell you a little about my background/taste in music. I would consider myself your average everyday blue collar worker. I have been working since I was 14 years old & have always loved music. I have been married for 10 years & have 2 children (with another one due in July). My first concert was R.E.M. on their "Green" World Tour. I have always enjoyed alternative/underground/indie music & in high school I was first introduced to punk rock by friends. My first punk show was Bad Religion/All on BR's "Generator" tour. My friends & I actually hung out with Scott Reynolds from All before the show, but we'll save that story for another day.

I first heard Rancid on a Sunday nite while watching MTV's 120 Minutes. Their video for "Salvation" was incredible!!! Tim's snarled singing style along with their F-You look just grabbed me. I went out the next day & purchased their 1994 album "Let's Go." I have been a Rancid fan ever since & each album continues to blow me away. It's amazing how these guys continue to grow/mature as song writers & each album has it's own distinct sound/style. "Life Won't Wait" demonstrates my point more than any other Rancid album to date. This album is clearly the pinnacle of their career & perhaps the most hated by their fans (which I have never quite understood).

"The phenomenon your about to witness could well revolutionize your way of thinking. We are presenting the startling facts & evidence that pick up where other explanations leave off. Some of these revelations may very well go against things you have been taught & perhaps believed all your life. Prepare yourself for the evidence which will follow:" --Intro to Rancid's 1998 album "Life Won't Wait"--

From the sonic guitar/harmonica on "Intro" to the xylophone on "Hoover Street" to the reggae drums on "Life Won't Wait," Rancid truly proved themselves as a songwriting force not to be reckoned with. The infectious Hey-Ho's...Lars lyrical delivery...Matt's amazing bassline..."Bloodclot" is pure punk & an absolute punk rock gem on this album. From that to Tim's quiet snarled poetry & xylophone on "Hoover Street," you could already tell that the punks from Oakland were taking the listener to a place their previous releases only hinted at.

The song "Life Won't Wait" is pure reggae/ska bliss. Tim & Lars tag team vocals are exactly what Rancid fans love! Add in surprise guest Buju Banton's vocals and you have an instant classic. This is Rancid pushing themselves to the limit & proving that they are more than just the stereotypical mohawked 3 chord punk rockers we have all been accustomed to. "Here's the new face of rock 'n' roll." A lyric delivered with absolute sincerity on another ska tune "Hooligans." That lyric is a rally call to all of you who haters out there who critizied these guys so hard for this album. "Wrongful Suspicion," "Crane Fist" & "Coppers" are 3 more exquistely written reggae tunes.

"Who Would've Thought" is Tim at his best! His vocal delivery along with Lars bluesy guitar.....AWESOME!!! Mighty Mighty Bosstones vocalist Dicky Barrett was a nice touch on "Cash, Culture and Violence." The harmonica on "Cocktails".....Matt Freeman's bass on "1998".....the rockabilly of "Lady Liberty"....."Something In The World Today" is more punk rock nirvana.....

I think I've made my point. Both lyrically & musically this album is far superior to anything else these guys have put out. The year 2000 found these guys having to prove themselves on the self-titled "Rancid" album all because of you haters who came down so hard on these guys for showing some song writing talent on "Life Won't Wait."

If you are a Rancid fan, then give this record another spin. If you've never heard Rancid, this is a great place to start.

Thanks for letting me rant. See y'all in the pit......

5 out of 5 stars The album that should put Rancid in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.......2006-04-02

I have every Rancid cd and totally love these guys, but out of all of them, I truly think this is their best. Every song is a new adventure that never gets old. It almost reminds me of a 90's street punk version of The Clash'es London Calling, but I think this is even better than London Calling, which is funny to me. This album I think should get more recognition in the Rock n ROll community other than the punk community. No doubt, this album should put Rancid in the rock n roll hall of fame someday. True brilliance, everything from start to finish. Probably the last great album Rancid ever made or will make.

This Band is the best punk rock band ever!! There's nothing much to say about this amazing disc!!!! Ok there's one thing BUY IT!!

5 out of 5 stars best rancid album of all time!.......2006-07-21

to me, this is rancid's best work. i don't understand why people say it's "rough around the edges", and crap like that! this is punk people! anyways, every song is fast, and catchy - which to me makes it a classic. this album kicks off with "adina", (one of the best songs on this CD) which is a fast short song, with awesome guitar riffs. and after you hear that song...you definetely will wanna listen to the next - trust me. and the next song "hyena", is another one of the best songs, and an awesome chorus that's all yelling...every song has it's own thing that makes it good. one of the slower songs, has got to be "outta my mind". tim's singing is what makes this song a classic (to me). tim's guitar work, bret's drumming, and matt's bass playing are at their best on this album. so if you're new to rancid, i would HIGHLY recommend this. if not this, "let's go" is another good one.

5 out of 5 stars super rad album.......2006-02-28

This record is awesome. This was before Lars joined the bad, but Lint, Brett Reed and Matt Freeman were all in it. Matt sings a lot more in this album than Rancid's later albums (prolly because Lars is a better punk singer), so if you don't like Matt's voice you might not dig a couple songs. Overall: f'ing rad album. Go to Epitaph Record's website to listen to a couple of the tracks before you buy it, if you want.

5 out of 5 stars LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-08

Man, oh man! This record kicks the sh*t outta all those pussy Good Charlotte albums. It starts out with Adina, fast pumping and loud! This whole album rocks, though I still don't see what people have against Indestructable. Oh, well. If you like real punk, get this.

3 out of 5 stars decent first album.......2005-08-24

rancid is one of the greatest punk rock bands of this generation and redefine themselves with every album. this is the album that started it all, and while not near as accomplished at their following works it does hold its own as a fairly solid debut. as heard in tracks like "hyena" and "rats in the hallway" the trademark rancid hooks and shout along choruses are present, but overall album is somewhat rough around the edges and also notably lacks the presence of lars frederikssen. i am also withholding stars because of the prominence of bassist matt freeman's lead vocals. His lead vocals are damaging to an otherwise solid debut record. as an introduction to rancid though, i would more recommend "Let's Go" or the punk rock masterpiece "...And Out Come The Wolves".

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Albums that make Amazon.com's yearly "best of" list are sometimes judged using high-falutin' artsy talk. Rancid has landed on the list because it compelled editors to scribble anarchy symbols in public hallways, buy skateboards, and start punk bands. Twenty-two songs, 39 minutes, and not one wasted second. A pure punk joyride with the throttle wide open. --S. Duda

Amazon.com

Critics love to toss spitballs at Rancid. After all, they say, Rancid have sold out; Rancid aren't punk enough; Rancid don't stand for anything; Rancid can't play and they certainly can't sing; Rancid rip off the Clash at every turn, etc. While Rancid have certainly wrestled with all of these catcalls, one high-volume spin of Rancid is more than enough to convince even the most self-righteous punk that the pride of the Bay Area are back with a ragged vengeance. Gone are the reggae, ska, and dub experiments of Life Won't Wait; in their place is a furious attack of guitars, yelling, and more guitars.

From its cover to the mostly illegible lyric sheet to the chaos inside, Rancid is paint-peeling punk rock of the highest order. Most of the 22 songs on this recording clock in at well under two minutes, and there are absolutely no ballads. Guitars are driven to within inches of meltdown, the bass careens just barely in control, and vocals are delivered with raging conviction and sometimes even a touch of melody.

No, the notes aren't always right, and nothing here is presented with polish or precision, but what Rancid might lack in virtuoso technique they more than make up for in intensity. Songs like "Antennas" and "It's Quite Alright" are lean, tough, and gritty. This recording never lets up, never takes a breath, and never compromises. That's punk. --S. Duda

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-07-13

Rancid was at their best when doing the experimental ska and reggae of their previous album Life Won't Wait. But I believe that this album was created because of the backlash of fans who disliked them experimented and just wanted punk rock, nothing more. Yeah, way to keep your integrity, Rancid.
As for this album, there are definitely some gems, but Rancid are at their best doing ska, reggae, or fun 70's style punk rock, like in ...AOCTW or the Operation Ivy days. Only a select few songs on this record contain the Rancid spirit I've been seeing in their albums; and those are Radio Havana, Let Me Go, and It's Quite Alright, while nearly every song on Life Won't Wait and Wolves contain the "Rancid spirit". WTF is up with the vocals? Lars Frederiksen, you are NOT Iam MacKaye. Lars seriously sounds like he's trying to sound like Ian. And Tim, have you had one too many cigarettes back in those days?
Anyone saying that Rancid "returned to their roots" with this album could not be further from the truth. Ska, reggae, and fun punk rock, ARE the band's roots.

Overall, its just an okay record. I think this hardcore music should best be kept to bands that know how to do it. I'd rather listen to this than Indestructible though, for that album truly is destructible.

(and to all the "punk rawk" Rancid fans out there, if you want to comment on my review, please post something smarter and more constructive than "you're wrong, this is a great album", because that's all I've been seeing from you people lately)

2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment from a great band.......2007-06-07

I've been a Rancid fan since the first self-titled album, and this is easily their worst album. I don't mind that they went for a hardcore sound on this record rather than the ska and reggae sounds that were found on their two previous albums. My problem is that these aren't hardcore songs done well. There is no build-up, contrast, or surprises in most of the songwriting that would warrant the monotonous angry tone. For songs so loud and fast, they simply don't rock as hard as they should. I love good hardcore music, and I love Rancid, but aside from a few classic tunes like Radio Havana, I don't regularly play anything on this disc. Their other albums are just so much better.

4 out of 5 stars Angry Rancid.......2006-10-15

This is by far Rancid's most "punk rock" album. It is very fast, ver hard, and most of the songs sound very angry. It's a lot different from the other albums, once again continuing Rancid's ever shifting genre. Good album.

2 out of 5 stars ehhhh.......2006-10-10

this is by far the worst rancid record. people calling it a return to the bands earlier sound could not be further from the truth. this album sounds NOTHING like "lets go" or their s/t effor..it doens't even sound like 7" they point out on lookout records back in '92. Lars' voice sounds like total crap..i usually love the tracks he does vocals on. but i don't like a single song on here that he sings...he's trying to scream way to much instead of actually signing. there are a few pretty cool songs "black hawk down" "radio havana" "black derby jacket" but the bad songs realy really take away from the good...i always felt that this record was sort of in repsonse for some fans reaction to "life won't wait" (amazing album) but i could be wrong...overall..just not that impressed...I just gotta say i read a few other reviews below...i think someone said something how this album had "a lil dub influence" yeah i don't see it. No i mean there is not an ounce of dub on here. just thought i'd point on that

4 out of 5 stars a bit of a change of pace, but a fresh breath of air!.......2006-07-27

even though they are classics, lets go, life wont wait, and out come the wolves all contained the poppy worn out rancid that we have all grown to love...but life wont wait, still being really good, was starting to lag behind compared to the previous two....now along comes this album and it is a complete hardcore in your face album that really rejuvenates them.

people will rag on this for them ditching the ska and what not..and yes i agree that this isnt as good as the other self titled, out come the wolves or lets go, but it is definately better than life wont wait and indestructible.

The idea of two punk giants fighting it out in the studio was born on the hallowed 7-inch single, but these two summer-tour veterans and Epitaph labelmates have brought it to the modern age on the third installment of BYO's Split Series. Berkeley, California's Rancid bring attitude and tradition to the bill. Old-school oafs NOFX bring humor and frontman Fat Mike, a veritable underground punk legend and karaoke king. Like a medical experiment gone so wrong it's right, together they take on six of each other's songs and the results are riveting--whether it's Rancid mowing through mosh-pit standards like "Moron Brothers" and "Stickin' in My Eye," or NOFX finding the funny side of the cod-reggae Clash tribute "Radio" and triumphantly thrashing "Corazon de Oro." --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just buy for Rancid.......2006-07-30

NOFX is an allright punk band, but in my opinion Rancid is a hell of alot better. Much better, and this album even proves it. Every song that Rancid covered rawked and every NOFX cover of Rancid sounded pathetic, almost like a mockery it was so so bad. Here's the fact, compared to Rancid, NOFX tremendously sucks donkey dong.

5 out of 5 stars Only buy this if you like both bands.......2005-08-21

I love Rancid and like NOFX, and when I bought this album I loved NOFX and liked Rancid. The original versions of the songs are better, but these covers are good and really interesting. Don't Call Me White is better than the original, Rancid does it good and I don't like that song when its by NOFX. I I'm the One is probably the best song by NOFX compared to the original Rancid song. GET THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars Good album for big fans of both bands. .......2005-07-08

Some of the people reviewing this are being kind of stupid and looking at it wrong. The bands weren't trying to out-do each other or anything. It was all just for fun. Some guy said NOFX ruined the Rancid songs by changing the style too much. THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT! Of course it's not going to sound like it's "supposed to!" They wanted to do the other's song in their own style. What would be the fun in trying to make it sound the same as the original version? I think they both did a great job.

Personally I liked NOFX's stuff better just because I'm a bigger fan of them. I'm a huge Rancid fan, too, but the vocals on "Don't Call Me White" and "Moron Bros." were kind of annoying. I guess just because Tim and Matt's vocal style doesn't really match up well with Fat Mike's, so it sounds really weird. As for NOFX, I liked all the songs. "Tenderloin" kind of bugged me because at first I didn't even recognize it until he started singing the chorus, but it was an okay cover. "Antennas" was awesome, and so was "Corozon De Oro." Their version of "Radio" was hilarious. I've talked to Rancid fans that hated that, but it's pretty obvious that it's a joke, especially if they saw them play it live at Warped Tour in 2002. They brought out a few rastafarians to play keyboard for it. It was great.

Best tracks are NOFX - "Olympia, WA" and Rancid - "Stickin In My Eye" or "The Brews," I can't decide.

Overall it's a cool buy, but before getting this I'd probably suggest owning most, if not all, of the NOFX and Rancid albums so you recognize the songs. It'll be cooler that way.

2 out of 5 stars I love Rancid, but..........2005-04-27

Rancid is my favorite band, but nofx ruined their songs. their covers of antenas and olympia werent too bad, but rancids are way better. Rancid however did a much better job of covering nofx's songs. Nofx changed the style way too much, it didnt seem right.

5 out of 5 stars AHHHHHHHH!!!.......2004-03-08

However, if it is the version that I got back when it first came out and you are a Rancid fan, this is SO worth the price. This may be Rancid's best song and this is a better version than on the "wolves" album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Single.......2004-05-11

I loved I Wanna Riot, it was the best song on this two track single.

3 out of 5 stars Funny they are selling this...........2000-02-03

Anyone remeber when Let's Go first came out, this single was bundled with it for free... now they are selling it. Oh well if you didn't get it with let's go, I bet you could write the band and they will send you a tape of it :) Besides, only one of these songs are unreleased now... since roots radicals is on ...and out come the wolves.

5 out of 5 stars This is only worth getting for "I wanna riot".......1999-12-05

Roots Radicals is awesome, but any Rancid fan would have the album it's on. Just get this Single for I wanna riot, it's the most maddest song I've ever heard

3 out of 5 stars it was great.......1999-05-31

rancid is a good band. the single should be the riot song. roots radical is already a good song. the single does not sound different
