Disintegration is a pop album realized on an epic scale. Most of its 12 songs are long mood pieces that develop slowly around the listener. Anchored by complex drum patterns, the layered guitars, soaring bass lines, and rich keyboards blend to create a lush, evocative soundscape that captures the ear immediately; and for all its length, the album is never boring. The lyrical focus is intensely personal throughout, and, with the exception of "Love Song," the mood is overwhelmingly dark and brooding. Here are songs of remembrance that, through their deep candor, transcend the individual level to explore universal longings and fears. Robert Smith, his vocals plaintive or angry or despairing, unfolds a tapestry of loss. Broken bonds, old lies, missed opportunities, belated realizations. Anyone who has experienced the joy and sorrow--especially the sorrow--of love will find his or her deepest sentiments, noble and petty alike, echoed poetically here. --Al Massa

I think it's dark , and it looks like rain ..........2007-07-06
put on head phones, turn your volume up to the breaking point. Then lay down and press play. There will never be another day that you will ever be the same. This record is one of the finest pieces of music ever recorded. Don't think for a moment that this is a "goth" record anyone who wants to hear what great song writing and production sounds like should own this record.
a classic........2007-07-03
Not only is this the Cure's best album, it is also one of the best records ever made. It is a classic. every so often, i listen to this cd in its entirety and i feel reborn.
Without a doubt..........2007-06-08
The Cure at their absolute best!!!... I've been hooked on this band since the first time i heard "In-Between Days" as a teen in the early 80's and their music has only gotten better... but this album was without a doubt their best work... from the beginning chimes of "plainsong" through the end of the barely mentioned, but amazing "untitled", this album takes your mind and heart on an unbelievable journey... Robert Smith's lyrics are so deep and thought-provoking, he writes like very few can or have the ability to... like one reviewer wrote, 5 stars is simply not enough...
the best cure album ever.......2007-05-05
this is the best album the cure ever recorded every song is great ,i wish i could give more than 5 stars.
Hype hype hype.......2007-04-20
I have to say it, after two months I still can't be convinced that this album is all the critics & fans claim it to be. Sure, it's thematically heavy, serious, existential, but for some reason it all seems a little contrived for me. I can allow myself to be moved by the opening track, despite its use of a cheap trick (it starts with some very low level chimes, forcing to turn up the volume, only to be hit by a thunderous opening to the album), and my mind does indeed turn to mortality as I listen to Smiths lyrics; and I can't deny the subtle work of lullaby, but in all it's a patchy album. The obvious highlight of the album is Same deep water as you, a mesmerizing echo back to the heydays of Faith. This song is a deep, slow, lush, dreamy sojourn into the parting of two lovers by the dark curtain that takes us all. Sounds depressing but it's quite a beautiful poetic piece. Could be a forgotten track off Faith.
It has some other decent songs like the airplay Pictures of you, but in all, it's just a darker version of their eclectic pop albums (which are actually more interesting) and doesn't come anywhere near their epic theme album Pornography or the delicately ethereal Faith. I'm afraid it's all hype. Of all the Cure albums I've so far listened to, this would have to be the biggest letdown. Maybe Smiths talents are indeed disintegrating. It does have one fine moment though; a poetic & obtuse lyric: "The shallow drowned lose less than we, you breathe". See? Smith still has it. It's just buried beneath his fame.

Faux Artsy Garbage.......2007-02-11
William Basinski is an avant-garde musician - which basically translates to "William Basinski is an artist who is easily impressed by very simple and obvious ideas, and who has zero musical talent but a lot of talent in talking about it." These are basically snippets of classical music that he has looped for 40 minutes, because they "disintegrate" -- and by "disintegrate," I mean it sounds like a cell phone going out of range, rather than any cool effect you might be expecting. The only thing Basinski has really added is a huge, cheesy canyon reverb over the whole thing and a pathetic attempt at justifying it, which unfortunately many people have bought into. He even attempted to link the project to 9/11 in order to over-emotionalize his music. In short, this is not really so much bad as insulting.
The music is soothing, yes, but it is very simple to recreate this CD yourself with actual music and a computer audio editor, and in about 15 minutes, too. Save yourself the time and $20.
Earthly orchestral sounds decaying into interstellar dust.......2006-05-29
William Basinski is a pioneer of ambient electronic music whose work goes back at least to the early 1980s, carrying the torch of an earlier generation of audio explorers whose primary tools were tape machines, feedback generators, and the like. His approach towards recording produces aural landscapes that are as alluring as they are austere. His most ambitious project thus far,The Disintegration Loops, is a 4 CD, 5 hour work dedicated to the victims of the 09/11/2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, is great enough not just in terms of its length but also scope, and solidifies Basinski's place in the pantheon of outstanding ambient/minimalist artists and composers.
The title of this review is the best way I can find to describe what this highly unusual music sounds like. Much has been said by previous writers as to the process by which these recordings were created, very few however have expressed the impact these loops have on the psyche while listening to them. Pastoral memories of childhood (dlp 1.1), slowly giving way to what sounds like static transmissions from another galaxy (dlp 2.2), with each piece becoming increasingly retrospective. The effect is hypnotic to be sure but also challenging, to listen to a 15-20 second loop being repeated for as long as one hour will be a test for many. But the manner in which each sonic landscape crumbles into nothingness is what makes each of these recordings so fascinating and hence lies its appeal. If you are turned off by minimalism, stay away from this, for it is minimalism in the extreme. But for everyone else, this is the best work of this type of music to be released so far this decade.
Postscript: This will also go well with your Oval and Bernard Gunter CDs.
hypnotically beautiful and haunting.......2006-02-25
This is truly a beautiful recording. As i understand, it was made 20 years ago, forgotten, and when re-discovered by the Mr.Basinski, it was literally falling apart. As he transfered it to a new medium, the tape disintegrated and it's perfect. The sound is like a more ghostly Brian Eno ambient release. It loops in and through itself and gradually falls apart as you listen. A special kind of Magickal music that reflects the passage of time like few pieces of art ever have.

Product Description
"And then, the man remained alone with more doubts than ever before. Music had flown through the years, the tapes definitively gone. IV draws the final line in this groundbreaking 'disintegration' cycle and it does it with a high grade of acute intensity and a totally developed loop aesthetic...moreover, the final track is sort of a reprise of the first segment in I, like putting an end to a whole giant texture. Basinski's repetitions are truly addictive; I could listen for days, each repeat bringing out new details to punch my stomach with majestic emotional landscapes. This music turns slow cartwheels in the conscience of the 'ones who know': it's a rerun of those life segments our brain likes spitting out randomly when we're reflecting in the silence. This Brooklyn artist casts a shadow on many so-called 'Ambient' semi-gods because of the simple contrast between his articulated flashbacks and the very simple means he uses. These loops are much more than fine-grained soundworks, rather they just turn out to put some well placed knot in carefully chosen throats."

Product Description
"As time passes by, one feels like trapped in quicksand: the more you try to liberate your mind from the echo of memories, the worse you get entangled into that certain 'something' thought to be completely forgotten, but still there in your very 'me'. This image came to my mind while listening to the fifth movement of Basinski's work-in-progress on these heartbreaking loops, probably the absolute top of the series as far as a simple concept of 'beauty' is usable. A few orchestral chords stretch one over another while the rolling tape shows here his worst kind of deteriorating, transforming a throbbing atmosphere of delicate infancy rememberings into a flesh-tearing interruption, then again getting into an almost complete silence, broken only by tape hiss and the last remnants of original sound: let me tell you, truly memorable. Part 6 begins right there where the other ends -- more chordal superimpositions in infinite repeat -- this time with minor damage to the tape during its course. This particular piece sounds like a long reflection on what's become of us after so many beautiful moments of our life; what should we try to do to the ones we care about to let them feel our love and respect? William's music is certainly a sign to all of us, he's opening his chest and letting us see what's in there: unbelievably, I -- for one -- have been able to look into a good portion of my own past thanks to his sad yet wondrous recalls."

Product Description
Prayers for disintegration is the very first tribute album from Poland. It is musically diverse and some tracks are even sung in Polish! The general mood of this tribute is very gothic, but it includes some experimentations in other styles (pop, new-wave, indus, electro), and the whole stuff is quite pleasant to the ear... Worth noting are the metal version of "Lovesong" by T.H.O.R.N., and the very Siouxsie-like "Plastic Passion" by Eva.
1. Tres Hombres "The Holy Hour" 2. Michelle "Pictures Of You" 3. God's Bow "Plainsong" 4. Thule "Lullaby" 5. Le Fleur "Want" 6. La Faucheuse "Burn" 7. eM "To Wish Impossible Things" 8.
