Radiohead's third album got compared to Pink Floyd a lot when it came out, and its slow drama and conceptual sweep certainly put it in that category. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning "We hope that you choke." Sluggish, understated, and hard to get a grip on, OK Computer takes a few listens to appreciate, but its entirety means more than any one song. --Douglas Wolk

Is there really a better rock album?.......2007-07-01
Ten years out, I think we have sufficient historical perspective to fairly evaluate this album.
Honestly, it seems to me there are things about "OK Computer" that one might do differently given the chance to change it. That being said, when has rock music risen higher than this? When has anyone made an album that inspires, frightens, and intrigues more than this record? I am interested to hear suggestions, but at the end of the day I think this is probably THE pinnacle for popular music during my lifetime (1970 to the present). Accordingly, I give it 5/5 stars, and consider it more favorably than anything else I am aware of. I am at a loss to understand how anyone else could fairly rate it any lower than 5/5.
one of the top five albums of all time.......2007-06-19
Radiohead's Ok Computer is by far one of the most shining achievements in music our ears have ever tasted. It is to music, what Speilberg is to cinema. Exit Music For a Film is melodic acid to my ears.
Right on the wall of perfection next to the Beatles White Album.
One of the best albums ever created. End of story. I believe most will concur!
the finest music available.......2007-06-05
I saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo in 2006 and the three songs that made everyone (80,000+ people) burst into tears were "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music (for a film)", and "No Surprises"; all from "OK Computer". I think this is the finest album ever produced. Yes, THE best ever. (Yes, I've heard The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, etc.) They all come close, (some very close) but this album is as close to perfect as there has ever been. Please ignore the reviews giving this album one star, for they are from pedestrian trash who have no right to express their opinion.
The top five albums ever produced are:
5. Innervisions - Stevie Wonder
4. Abbey Road - The Beatles
3. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
1. OK Computer - Radiohead
Just you wait and see. Most masterpieces take a long time to be recognized as genius. They are simply over many people's heads.
Practically Flawless.......2007-06-02
I will start by saying that OK Computer is worth the money for the song "Let Down" alone. In my opinion, this song is Radiohead's finest and I consider it one of the best songs recorded in the past 20 years. Its complex layers of instrumentals and vocals build upon each other flawlessly to create the melancholy effect the Radiohead doubtlessly intended to create. It is one of those rare songs that I never get sick of hearing.
That said, the rest of OK Computer is almost equally flawless in its complexity and moodiness. Paranoid Android, Subterranean Homesick Alient, Exit Music, Airbag, and Lucky are all highlights for me, and this is definitely one album where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts--although the parts are great. The album is very much a journey (corny, I know), and definitely makes a statement. OK Computer represents one of those rare instances where an artist accomplishes, and in fact exceeds, what it set out to do.
If you don't own this album, buy it. If you don't own any Radiohead albums, buy this and The Bends. You won't be sorry.
Music for your head.......2007-05-16
Radiohead is one of the smarter bands in the rock business today - their cryptic lyrics, unexpected chord changes and clever use of studio effects put them a cut above the idiotic mid-90s pop-punkers they shared the spotlight with. Lots of creativity. For example, this group's got three lead guitarists, but DOESN'T use those guitars in the two senses most three-guitar bands do: either crush you with volume, or craft quarter-hour guitar jams. While there's some fine hard-rock here (Electioneering, Climbing Up Walls, bits of Paranoid Android), the best of this album comes from the quiet, moody, pensive songs with plenty of studio experimentation: the chilling Exit Music (for a Film), climactic closer The Tourist, mellow, paranoid, piano-driven (and Beatles-quotin') radio hit Karma Police, the chilling Subterranean Homesick Alien (gotta love the Dylan reference), and the slightly more optimistic but still extremely dark Lucky.
Then there's Paranoid Android.
This three-part suite is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs of all time. It manages to contain every element of this album: a quiet acoustic section, a blaring rock section, the haunting "Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain doooooooooooown on meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... from a greaaaat height, from a great aeeeee..." part (which is so fjordkin' awesome...) with the overdubbed "That's it sir, you're leaving" and the Gregorian chant backdrop; a brutal one-note guitar solo, and paranoid (it is called Paranoid Android, after all) lyrics. Think The Beatles' Happiness is a Warm Gun, only longer and even more depressing. Plus it quotes Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Schweet!
Thom Yorke is one of the best vocalists ever - his voice is less a way of communicating the lyrics and more of a sixth instrument. Throughout the lyrics are cryptic, more about setting a mood than anything else. Compared to most of today's "alternative" (a genre I don't like - it fell apart when the grunge scene died, at least to me) rock, it sounds completely out of nowhere. There are a few touchstones: Pink Floyd, U2, late-period Beatles (all bands certainly worth getting to know if you don't know them already), but you can tell these guys are more leaders than followers and are destined for great things. I'd like to seem them on the fast track for rock canonization.
Now before I proclaim this one of the ten greatest albums ever, I'd like to discuss the only mistake. Fitter Happier. Bad, bad idea. The computerized voiceover/ironic recitiation works perfectly in a fifteen second situation, but dragged out to two minutes? Uh-uh, doesn't work. But that's all that keeps OK Computer from being able to compete with the Abbey Roads, Kind of Blues and Sticky Fingers of this world.

Mixed bag.......2007-04-15
I'm a fairly new Radiohead convert, and a long time violinist (no great shakes, but I can hold my own in a quartet), so this seemed like the perfect marriage to me. Mostly, I'm enjoying the album, but I wonder at some of the arranging choices. "Let Down" in particular inspired me to come and review the album; I like the other tracks a lot, but "Let Down" is such a rich, full song on the album that I was expecting something similar, or perhaps even better, on the quartet album. Unfortunately, the choice to use pizzicato for the accompanying rhythm just doesn't do it for me -- it sounds sterile to me; if I were doing it myself (and I admit, I don't have the abilities to do so, really), I would have bowed that portion, or arpeggios, or something that better fit the mood of the song. "Karma Police", on the other hand, works really well, as do "Airbag", "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Electioneering", and "The Tourist". I like "Fitter, Happier" and "Climbing up the walls" better on this album than the originals (blasphemy!), and "Lucky" is pretty darned good, too.
Overall, I would certainly recommend the album to classical-only types who would like to branch out a little, or Radiohead fans who also enjoy classical music, or parents who've gotten a little tired of the "Baby Rock" versions of these songs, but still want something the kids can also listen to at bedtime. I've been vacillating between 4 and 5 stars, and given that "Let Down" was the only song that was (forgive me!) a real let down, I decided 5 was appropriate.
Now, can anyone tell me where to get the sheet music for these so I can try them out with my quartet?
SQ to Radiohead.......2007-03-14
I loved it, husband (die-hard Radiohead fan) did not. He says there is nothing like the original. I'm a dancer and just love string quartets, so I can see where he is coming from.
music to my ears.......2006-12-12
All I can really say is that the music on this cd is beautiful. I love the original Radiohead version, but I quite honestly like this one more. They managed to capture the feel and sound of Radiohead so well, and I think some of the songs sound even better on strings. I personally loved Let Down on the string version; I never cared that much about that one that on the regular version. I really don't understand how anyone can not like this album. Even if you are a big Radiohead fan and you don't feel this cd quite measures up to the original, it is still gorgeous in it's own right. The flow and mood is usually right on, and I just get lost in it.
As much as I have gushed about this cd, I usually don't even like classical versions of pop/rock/whatever music. They almost always fall way short by not capturing the mood, or being very poorly arranged. Groups like Apocalytica are an example of ones that I don't like--having a cello quartet doesn't really work for a lot of the songs they do because it doesn't allow for hardly any range in sound. It usually just sounds like a big mess. There are many others that I have been sorely disappointed with, as well, but I will not go into them right now.
Oh, get off your high horses..........2006-01-14
*chuckle* You negative reviewers are funny. So negative. I feel bad for you guys. It's ok, though. I guess you can't avoid such hostile reviews. *Patting you on the back* Everything's gonna be alright. Anyhoo...
This album is great. Yes, it has its flaws, but they are minimal. Radiohead is one of the greatest bands ever, and I can't blame this quartet for not getting it exactly right. But I applaud them for their efforts. Their work is very impressive, considering how complex Radiohead's music is... a successful attempt, I'd say. You have to keep in mind that this is Radiohead's music we're talking about... and these people have a set of 4 string instruments (nothing more, nothing less)... 4 STRING INSTRUMENTS! RADIOHEAD'S music! A great task, no? The end result? I say: *clap clap clap* "Good job, guys!"
OK, nuff blabbering. Here's my actual review for the album itself...
What NOT to expect from this album: A complex rendition. Leave that to Mr. Christopher O'Riley (which I think you should pick up, btw). Brad Mehldau does a pretty good job as well.
What to expect from this album: A simple rendition. What it does is... it takes the basics of Radiohead's OK Computer and plays them out on 4 string instruments. Simple as that.
Standout track: Exit Music (For A Film)
Some advice: As w/all music, listen w/an open mind. Not all renditions of Radiohead's music have to be super complex and crazy like O'Riley's, Mehldau's, n such. (Btw, yes, I know that they are both 'one pianist w/one piano' but both of their styles are different. They have their own renditions. And this, my dear friends, is a string quartet's rendition. And as I'm sure you all know, a piano is very different compared to the strings, anyway). Also, a part of being open-minded involves listening to the tracks all the way through. Give it a try... you might just be surprised.
Simply put: Overall, this album is pretty simple... but pretty.
And to the negative reviewers (especially to the one's who gave one star): Sorry to hear that this album made your guys' ears bleed. In all seriousness, though, I wonder what you'd think of Jonny Greenwood's Bodysong? Not in comparison to this, but in isolation. In its greatness, complexity and simplicity hold hands. Let's do that.
Awful.......2005-11-21
I bought this CD without really knowing what to expect. I'm a classically trained musician, so it was my hope that this album would succeed in capturing the essence successfully. I was hoping it'd line up with the good portion of Chris O'Riley's arrangements, but unfortunately I was let down on both counts.
What it came down to was a performance that lacks all of the colour and nuance that's present in the original Radiohead album. For one, the arrangements sound like someone took the OK Computer piano book from a music store and dished out parts...very simple arrangements. Listen to Chris O'Riley (although they're sometimes too complex) or even Canadian Brass play Beatles.
Two: All I heard were mono-dynamic performances of very dynamic music. Everything was the same volume!
Three: Tuning was an issue sometimes (although I'm sure that sometimes it was trying to imitate Radiohead's pitch bending.
Four: The string quartet as a medium lacks the colours necessary to pull across the many colours that exist in each section of radiohead! Maybe this can be solved with better arrangement.
In short, this album was awful and I would strongly discourage anyone from buying it. I listened up to Karma Police before I got angry, turned it off and put on Kid A to cleanse my ears.
Definitely stay away from this!

Silly at times and serious at others, Beefcake Messiah makes ska for the rest of us. The lead vocals are a pleasant blend of Brandon Boyd and Mike Patton, and the melodies are catchy.

Had to review this masterpiece again..........2006-11-16
I reviewed this album well over 10 months ago, but I decided that I had to review it one more time. Radiohead's Ok Computer is a deep- thoughtful album that speaks of alienation, hypocrisy, and the "rights" of American citizens that have been abused so much over the years through its music. Radiohead has constantly evolved over the years, never retracing their footsteps. Take 1995's The Bends, the album before Ok Computer. It was a rock guitar album that had not hints of what was to come (but it was still a classic album full of heart that remains of Radiohead's best even today), while this album is a bleak, cold vision of the present day that takes more than a few listens to appreciate (while The Bends was very easy to love). Speaking of which, if you've listened to this album and you haven't been able get into it, or just gave up altogether, I urge you to keep listening to it. Ok Computer takes a while to reveal its genius, but once you get there, you'll never want to leave. You also have to appreciate the fact that Thom Yorke doesn't care what kind of music is "in style," he, Ed O'Brian, Colin Greenwood, Johny Greenwood, and Phil Selway make the music they love, and they've been rewarded for that over the years with loads of commerical success that they never dreamed of having. I've owned this album for 4 years now (and all of Radiohead's records for 3 years now), and it still remains in my top 5 albums of all time.
This is intelligent music for intelligent people. If you're looking for a generic, radio-friendly CD that will make all the "cool" kids at your school think you're "s0000 k3wl" until the fad dies out, go listen to some Ashlee Simpson you retard!
"Anywhere you go, I'll be there. Open up your skull, and I'll be there, climbing up the walls...." - Climbing up The Walls.
Must Have.......2001-03-14
This is simply one of the quintessential albums in modern music history. If you don't own it, you should. Oh...and clear out a space in the top drawer of your CD cabinet for this one. It's going to be there for a while.
Simply the best.......2000-02-14
For those who are still doubting wether to buy it or not just click on add to shopping basket. I can make sure it will be the best record you could ever listen to. It is a masterpiece!Every single song will move something inside of you. The way Thom Yorke sings will blow you away. Still doubting? Well, from now on youll be responsible for missing the best album ever or listening to it 10,000 times a day. You wont regret. The best one ever.
OK Computer. OK Radiohead........1999-11-06
Radiohead is one of the greatest bands in rock history. Today, they are simply the best ones.
excellent.......1999-04-06
It's unbelievable that hmmm they're just TWO ALBUMS away from their debut and they are LIGHT YEARS away from "Creep". An album about how modern life is nonsense and what really matters is "No alarms and no surprises." Every song's a winner, it's produced great, they play them REALLY well and the album flows masterfully from one song to the next. This is by far the dumbest review I've ever written but I'll continue. An album like this is a REAL rarity these days, where a band records a whole hour worth of consistently great material. Normally a band these days will get famous on one song and then fade into obscurity (for example Hanson with "MmmBop", Los Del Rio with "Macarena" and Eminem with that stupid Slim Shady song whose name I can't recall). I'm not familiar with the American release of this album, so I don't know the differences. You? Anyway, OK Computer is, along with the Flaming Lips' "Zaireeka", the best album of 1997. And I KNOW that they're gonna get better. FYI: A fourth album is due for release in late 99-early 2000.
