Amazon.com Review
Normally, Nintendo contract players such as Mario, Pikachu, Link, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and Kirby are generally happy and well-mannered, but in <I>Super Smash Bros. Melee</I>, the pleasantries get thrown out and the gloves (except for Mario's) come off. This update of the N64 favorite features these and other video game icons in furious, yet utterly absurd fisticuffs that usually make for a smashing good time. Just make sure you have at least one human opponent to pound on.
Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise--let Nintendo's stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. In typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. The actual combat isn't as intricate as in other fighting games; however, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.
<I>Super Smash Bros. Melee</I>'s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. The camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, <I>Melee</I> sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.
As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game's existence, the single-player mode is decidedly weak. The game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. Sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands. --Mark Brooks

Product Description
Super Smash Brothers Melee is a great fighting game where you put your favorite Nintendo characters against each other, to find out who's the toughest of them all!

One of the best games ever!.......2007-06-10
I've been a fan of Super Smash Bros ever since it came out, and years later I still play it often! Can't wait for Smash Bros Brawl to come out for the Wii! This game is great for both single and multi player, and the amount of items, characters, and stages to unlock keeps the game fun for years on end. Highly recommended!
Great Fun for Young and Old!!.......2007-06-04
I only wish I could find more time to play so I could give my daughter more of a challange. This game plays very well and is a fun way to spend some time with my kid.
Best Game on GameCube.......2007-06-01
Don't be stupid and own a GameCubeGamecube Console Platinum but not this. Then, go get yourself the old Smash BrosSuper Smash Bros. if you can and the new one 'Brawl'Super Smash Bros. Brawl when it comes out for WiiNintendo Wii.
This game is not very entertaining with its main 3 one-player story modes. The 51 task-oriented challenges for 1-player rock. The multiman melee, the multiplayer, the homerun contest, and the special melee rule. The tournament mode is stupid, unless you do a tournament with it--I don't mean to be redundant but that is the only way to put it (they needed to add elements to the game as extra options in tournament--like different tournament trophies, records, stages, and AI enemies that are NOT playable and nearly impossible to beat).
Characters and multiplayer play rule. CHOOSE YOSHIYoshi Touch and Go--all the advantages of all 3 weights of characters.
I laughed so hard I could have cried!.......2007-05-25
I think this game is the best ever for groups of people. My friends and I played together for first time together. We couldn't stop laughing and having fun. Fighting at first was confusing but hilarious. Whether we were playing as Yoshi or Zelda we never got bored and played for hours. Some of the environments were more confusing and less fun but it was the actual sight of seeing an opponents face wipe against the tv that made this game so much fun. So many character and color schemes!!! The sound effects are great.
Fantastic.......2007-05-23
Ordered this game with GameCube and 2 extra controllers - the game(and memory) arrived days later . The GameCube weeks later (and the controllers are still not here). We played the game on several friends GameCubes and saved it on our memory card. Love this game!
