Customer Reviews:
Great Product but display is too bright.......2007-04-10
I have this unit set up on the TV in my bedroom. The product is great, tell me exactly what I need to know. It does run a little warmer than a usual UPS but not much hotter. My biggest complaint is that since I have it set up in my bedroom and the blue screen is very bright and there is no way to dim or turn just the screen off. Other than that, the UPS works great.
Excellent once I figured out how to turn off the alarm.......2007-03-15
This UPS is more than adequate for my needs. Like other reviewers here, I was annoyed at the audible alarm when power was lost in the middle of the night. Here is how to turn off the alarm. Works for Windows and *nix.
Download and run the PowerAlert software from tripp-lite. Under the Settings>>Schemes section change it to Business Device Management System. On the Action section, select the Set Audible Alarm task. In the Parameters below change the Value to 3. Then click Execute Command.
No more alarm and a UPS with a cool blue LCD that provides battery backup for my computer, router, cable modem, and VOIP gizmo.
In answer to one review below, a log of power events etc. is available in the Business Device of the software mode in the logs section.
not sure whether the hardware works; software doesn't.......2007-03-13
Based on my current knowledge, I would rate this at 1 or 2 stars rather than 3.
I have a DSL modem which periodically loses its state information. It has been claimed that this is caused by glitches in the electrical power. The Tripp Lite UPS provides both backup power and power conditioning. I was hoping that the power conditioning would stop the DSL modem from periodically losing its state, but it hasn't. So, either the problem with the modem is not power related, of the Tripp Lite power conditioning isn't very good. I suspect that the problem is with the power conditioning.
At night, the audible alarm can be extremely annoying. Furthermore, with the USB cable connecting the UPS to the computer, the UPS should be able to sense whether the computer is on or off, and there is absolutely no point in sounding the alarm if the computer is off.
I contacted Tripp Lite technical support, and they told me to download and install the PowerAlert software. I installed the software and connected the USB cable, but the software has never been able to detect the UPS. After weeks of going back and forth with Tripp Lite technical support (one has to wait 3-4 days for a response each time), I eventually learned that the software requires drivers that are not available for Windows XP. So, I finally returned the unit.
Excellent Unit - Bad Reviews.......2006-08-14
We are using this unit more and more in the field. I have one on my desk and one for my rack of networking and satellite equipment at the house. The battery display is great when the power is out. Imagine this, I was able to goto the website for my power company to get their phone number when the power went out last time.
As for the previous reviews, here's a couple things to consider. Like most ups, half of the outlets are surge and battery backup, the other half are just surge protection. Now the surge protection only side is great for things like speakers and printers, but if you plug your computer into the wrong side, you won't get the battery backup feature. APC actually started putting big yellow stickers on their UPS because of this.
And the power and heat. Yeah, it gets hot, when it's charging. It's warm when its fully charged.. But it doesn't continously pull 1A of power. I'm sure it does when it's charging, but my fully charged unit only pulls 5 to 20w of power or 50 to 160 Milliamps of power (.05A - .16A). Checked it myself with my power meter.
In all, this is a great unit and for 1000VA, it's a good deal.
Does not handle brownouts at all.......2006-07-28
I had 2 units (one for my computer systema dn one for my HT because I like the digital and horizontal layout) After a month or so, we started to experience brownouts, or split second drops in power. Some would flicker the lights, other simply went unnoticed. However, every time, the Tripp Lite would cut off. The battery would not kick in and my computer would be shut down and my TV would lose all user settings. I contacted Tripp Lite support (which costs you a long distance call, because they do not have a 1-800 number!!) They had no idea what was wrong.
So I returned both units to Costco and thought maybe a different month model would be better. Nope. The newly replaced models of different serial number sequences do the same. The UPS will cut off even when the lights don't flicker! I'll be working on my computer (took it off battery to avoid shut down) and the warning window comes up 2-3x a day saying I'm on battery back up! The lights don't flicker, power is fine, and the UPS is running off the battery!?!!?
These two are going back and I'll try APC again.
