Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gibson's latest.......2007-06-13

Following Passion, this movie is not something you want to view with young children. Gibson has distinguished himself as a director/writer who is willing to show the unpleasant side of life. I wondered going in how much plot it would have, the previews just showed a guy running around in a jungle. I was really surprised how this film pulled me in. If nothing else, I think it does an excellent job of showing how life was in the Mayan culture. The barbaric cruelty and lack of respect for life made me appreciate living in civilized times. The movie follows the span of just a few dramatic days of a young man living in a jungle village. The first half of the film is outstanding. It shows in meticulous detail how people survived and adapted in an incredibly harsh environment; to the point where I cared and saw how life was, although unpleasant, worth living. Absolute barbarism is demonstrated not too far into it. The character development is such that I hated to see this cruelty played out on people I felt I had started to know. There were several points throughout that made me cringe. A few even brought tears to my eyes. As the movie progressed, however, I started having problems with it. The prophecy by the young girl raised an eyebrow. The solar eclipse raised two. After that it was an inter-mix of concern for the characters (who faced a very uncertain fate) and laughable plot points. It came to the point where I noted that even the waterfall scene was unrealistic (I'm no geography major, but I'm pretty sure there aren't a whole lot of major waterfalls within a mile or so of an ocean where this story takes place). The ending was very "Lord of the Flies," and I wonder if Touchstone is paying royalties. In the end, I would recommend that you check out this movie. If you've read this far into my review you are interested enough to sit through it. You won't be disappointed. Empathize with the characters and try to experience for a few hours what life was like in that place and time. Realize, however, that it becomes very "Indiana Jones" about half-way through, and anyone with an IQ over 100 is going to wonder what all the goofiness is about. I'd recommend it as a rental, and Blu-ray is definately worth checking out (here's hoping the local Blockbuster starts carrying them so I can rent, not buy). If you liked Passion and think you'll like this, pick it up. You won't be disappointed if you buy it. I'm not.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-12

This a fantastic movie! The scenery is great and the characters very interesting. I wonder if the trauma that the characters go thru is anything like the slave trade in africa or any place in the world.
The one thing I would like is to have the movie dubbed in English. I know it is more authentic in its native 'aztec' language, but I think I may have missed a few things by reading the subtitles.

4 out of 5 stars So close to 5 stars..........2007-06-09

I have this movie on Blu-ray disk. Played this on my playstation 3 through a Sharp HD tv. The picture and sound is incredible. There is no doubting that the technology is a huge leap forward.
The film itself it very good...but...
You buy this film because you want a visually stunning film that takes you to a different place for a couple of hours. This film does this...but in a couple of places you find yourself wondering if they over edited or simple forgot to shoot for an additional 10 or 20 seconds, that would have made this a masterpiece.
The important bits:
1 - This is not historically accurate - but it's not designed be.
2 - I recommend this film to everybody who can recognise great sights and sounds.
3 - I will be buying more Blu-ray disks based on my experience with this one.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic movie.......2007-06-08

I have this movie on blue ray disk. I have a sony hd television and played this on my playstation 3. this movie is the BOMB! I couldn't believe how clear and crisp the picture is! the surround sound was fabulous. We felt like we were in the movie. the story is easy to follow. there are subtitles, but easy to read, your not focusing on reading and missing the movie. bloody, war scenes. just like braveheart. I liked it alot. Mel Gibson came through once again! this is a movie I can watch over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Mel's best since Braveheart, Must add to blu-ray collection.......2007-06-07

I watched this movie not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised, the movie moves at a fast pace and regardless of how "Historically Accurate" the story is, it's a very good story. Not to mention the Blu-Ray picture and Mayan PCM are phenomenal. I rate this as a BUY.
