Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible product - here's why.......2007-06-12

I was really looking forward to Vista. I ran out and got my copy as soon as it hit shelves. Two weeks later, I uninstalled it. I don't know when, or even if, I will reinstall it. Here's why:

1) Game support - BEFORE you buy Vista, make sure your favorite game has a Vista patch, because it most likely won't work otherwise. Check online to ensure that they are compatible, because many just aren't.
2) Immature drivers - in point 3 below, you'll see that Vista flat out does not support many hardware devices. Even for those that it does, the drivers are so new, that the device (like my GeForce 7900GT) actually run SLOWER in Vista than XP.
3) Hardware support - most vendors are NOT releasing Vista drivers, to force people to buy new hardware. For instance, my scanner (Epson) has no vista compatible driver (I tried the XP driver), and neither does my camera. BEFORE you buy Vista, check to see that your hardware is supported!
4) Copy protection. Like to copy a DVD so you can watch it whenever you want? Forget it! It WILL NOT happen in Vista, M$ made sure of that. Same thing with programs like TuneBite that let you convert WMA songs into MP3s.
5) Antivirus. Vista's security it, well, more secure than XP. But the antivirus applications compatible with it are VERY lacking at this point. And there are already viruses (virii?) out for Vista, so you DO need it.
6) Firefox - many sites do not work under Firefox with Vista. And some extensions do not work. I can't help but think this might be intentional.

1 out of 5 stars Vista Should Be Kicked Into A Spartan Well.......2007-06-12

Bugs bugs bugs, and I highly doubt they will go away. The amount of resources it takes do simple tasks such as open an application or type a single character is painful. Load, load, load... .

Disabling User Access Control (UAC) isn't exactly the source of the issue. We shouldn't HAVE to do anything but use our PCs in peace. We shouldn't HAVE to tweak this and tweak that. The OS should work excellent and be at least a 6/10 out of the box, not a 1/10.

UAC is NOT the only Vista problem. It has strange pop-ups that complain and give you absolutely no valid reason why it does.

It is a resource HOG (I'm talking bigger than the hog that the 11 yr old boy recently killed in Alabama) like none that we've ever seen before. I've run this on a 2.5GHz dual processor machine and it makes it feel like a Celeron 150MHz. I've seen people type slow, yet the text on screen is STILL behind.

I can't even transfer files across the LAN easily; heck, when I transfer files period, it just hangs saying "Calculating" time. Sometimes it freezes during the transfer, and when you check to see if the file is there, it may or may not be. And if it is, you can't trust that it's all there or hasn't been corrupted during the "Calculating".

They've changed the interface to make things more "cool", but it's giving Advil and Aspirin more business.

I can have the weather and an analog clock on my desktop. Whipeedoooo. The digital clock on the bottom right of my screen isn't good enough; I'd rather minimize everything so I can see the analog clock! Furthermore, I've always wanted to check the weather and time every 5 seconds - *rolls eyes*.

Why do we have to do so much research (in which we don't get paid) just to solve mundane issues?

I've never experienced a more sorry OS. I don't know how it has even has 3 stars. Are MS employees trying to unjustly balance the score here? The only reason why I gave it 1 star is because Amazon forced me to.

Corny metaphor warning:
The user is Leonidas, Vista is the messenger, and Bill Gates is Xerxes.
Now give the messenger a good kick.

1 out of 5 stars More Problems Crop Up the Longer You Use it.......2007-06-11

Apart from the obvious UAC (which can be disabled by going to msconfig/tools) many of Microsoft's programs don't work with it. MS allowed me to upgrade to Small Business Accounting 2007 for free when 2006 version wouldn't install.

The OS also crashes frequently - don't know why. I haven't seen PC crashes like this since days of Windows 3.1 (which predates Windows 95).

It is as if some programmers at Microsoft want to take revenge on the company for something. They are going out of their way to ruin a great company's reputation.

1 out of 5 stars Labrynith of complexity just to copy a file for a techie.......2007-06-10

I'm fairly technical, modifying html, doing ftp, a few unix commands, can work in DOS, and having sold computer systems for six years. This OS is maddening. Every once in a while you try to do some incredibly simple file operation like change the photo orientation one quarter turn clockwise, or copy a file, and you read all of the technical notes on the internet, follow all the tricks, turn off and turn on certain security features, go at it from ten different angles, and it still doesn't work. DO NOT buy this OS until they thoroughly resolve the file and folder permissions issues. This is probably a usability issue rather than a bug, but it is a severe, severe usability issue. Beware. (I rarely write a review this negative)

2 out of 5 stars A Very Disappointing and Defective Windows Upgrade.......2007-06-04

I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate for several months now, and I must say that I am extremely disappointed. I'm normally a big early adopter of technology, but Vista is just not ready for primetime, folks. Yes, it's basically Windows XP warmed over with a somewhat prettier interface (that is a me-too rip off of the Mac OS).

Beyond that, though, it actually has several bugs that make one wonder how this thing was ever shipped as production ready. Some of the bugs that I have noticed so far (and confirmed to be problems others are having):

* After going to sleep and waking up again, my computer loses its Internet connection (both wired and wireless). I have to manually run an "ipconfig /renew" command or otherwise refresh the adapters to be up again.

* Basic file copy and deletion operations take forever as the fancy, new file operation dialog says it's "calculating." This is almost unforgivable for an operating system to flub up such basic tasks.

* Vista haphazardly classifies certain folders as various multimedia views (pictures, music, etc.)--even when they are just regular files. Gee, I always wanted to know what the "album" and "rating" of a DLL or EXE file is. Despite attempts to correct the situation, Vista eventually loses the settings and reverts back to its signature craziness.

* The new security pop ups (UAC) often come up more than once for the same basic task, even something as simple as renaming a file. They are totally intrusive.

* Interface elements, such as networking, that were simple in Windows XP have been obfuscated with dumbed down and nonsensical interfaces that make it difficult to accomplish certain tasks.

* After installing and running many programs, I have received a dialog of Vista asking me if things "ran properly." As if I knew. I think things ran properly, but the fact that the dialog box comes up makes me question it. So which is it?

* File lists in folders now re-sort on the fly. Rename a file, and it will disappear right afterward if the file list is large enough.

And the list goes on and on. With the development time that went into this product, I'm quite disappointed. At this point, I sort of wish I switched to the Mac OS instead of buying a new laptop with Vista on it. If you get Vista, wait until the first service pack comes out.
