Now with XM Passport, a mini satellite tuner can be easily connected to other XM Ready devices (like car audio and portable device players) using only one subscription. Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic II: Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX. By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result - a fuller 360º experience is created…even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic II is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic standard. Pro-Logic II provides a full-range signal to the five main channels, in addition to a subwoofer channel. This creates a realistic surround environment from a two-channel source, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio, etc.

RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo's exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What's more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo's RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can't be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

7.1 Multichannel Inputs: The emergence of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs promises to bring unparalleled realism to home theater. Dolby and DTS have each developed improved audio formats to be encoded on these new DVD discs that will superbly complement the latest in highdefinition video. By connecting a player compatible with these new audio codecs to an Onkyo A/V receiver equipped with 7.1 multichannel inputs, you will be able to experience extreme sonic clarity from these new discs, while retaining the full use of the receiver's other onboard codecs.

DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the "96/24" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).

NeuralSurround: Neural Surround™ represents the latest advancement in surround technology developed for music and is adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcast of surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround™ employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. The TX-SR504 is an XM-Ready home theater receiver, allowing consumers to subscribe to and receive 150 channels of commercial-free music, news, talk, and entertainment programming with the addition of any of the widely available XM Connect-and-Play antennas. It is one of the first home theater receivers to include Neural Surround decoding, which is capable of reproducing Neural-encoded XM broadcasts in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound. The unit also includes a high quality terrestrial radio tuner and features 40 presets for AM, FM, or XM stations. This receiver has a full suite of processing for home-theater sound, including Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, and even DTS 96/24. With DTS Neo:6 and Dolby ProLogic IIx, the receiver is capable of automatically deriving full 7.1-channel audio from absolutely any stereo or multichannel source. It features high quality linear PCM 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converters and a sophisticated 32-bit DSP engine for ideal reproduction of soundtracks and multichannel audio.

There are seven internal power amplifier channels with high-current, low-impedance discrete output devices, to deliver a continuous power output of 75 Watts per channel into 8-Ohm loads. Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) gives the power stage a linear frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz to ensure it's up to the challenge of the most demanding audio sources. There are dual banana-plug-compatible multi-way speaker binding posts for all main channels with color-coding for simplified wiring, as well as front channel "B" terminals to enable the receiver to drive a stereo pair in a second zone. The dot-matrix fluorescent front panel display makes setup and operation of the receiver easy and fast, including variable speaker configuration and distance settings for simple optimization of any speaker arrangement. Excellent Receiver for the money.......2007-06-13

My fourteen year old Onkyo receiver began to have troubles after thousands of hours of use and I tried this brand again. I have had the 504 for two months now and I am once again very satisfied. Easy set up, plenty of power, clear sound. No complaints at all.

I picked up a 504 about 2 weeks ago at the $169 price. Great Deal! This is replacing a Sony 6.1 receiver that suddenly lost digital sound. Purchased many Sony products in the past, but thought this time I wanted to go with Onkyo. This receiver fits my need; 46" Hitachi HDTV, Infinity speakers. Presently using as a 5.1 set up for DVD and digital tv. Absolutely fantastic surround sound, very clean and may I say loud. It works for me.

Great amp for the $$.......2007-06-08

Got the Onkyo for 169 delivered. works wonderfully. easy set up, sounds decent. I use for an outside am to power a few speakers inside and outside of my garage. Would like more power...but hey it is an outside amp....not my main home theater amp.

Had to return and get Marantz SR4001.......2007-06-01

Unfortunately, I had to return this Onkyo because it made my speakers sound just OK. I bought it based on reviews here and at Circuit City. It's highly rated, but my Monitor Audio Bronze B4 speakers sound great on my Marantz SR4001 (about $500) After hearing the speakers in the store on a Marantz SR4230 and then this TX-SR504, they sounded flat. The speakers are only $600, so I didn't think they'd be over the Onkyo's head. I used the digital audio connection, but the Marantz SR4230 only has analog and it STILL sounded way better. I will say though that the Onkyo was much better with my old SONY SS-U211 speakers than with my old NIKKO amp. Unless you're buying a more expensive receiver, it's best to hear it with YOUR speakers first. I thought I could just base it on other peoples ratings, but I got disapointed. I may have been able to just get a better Onkyo.
