Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic DMR-ES35VS brings together a VCR and multi-format DVD recorder, enabling you to continue to enjoy your VHS video tape library as well as record TV programming and home videos directly to DVD disc. It includes easy-to-use front panel controls as well as an S-Video/composite AV input for connecting gaming consoles and video camcorders. This unit provides easy, one-touch copying of non-copy protected DVD disc material to VHS tape, and vice versa--great for archiving your old home videos. It also offers a FireWire port (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) for direct connection to a digital video camcorder, enabling you to download footage directly to disc.

Choose from a full spectrum of recordable DVD media--write-once DVD+R and DVD-R discs or rewritable DVD-RW/+RW and DVD-RAM discs. (For temporary storage, such as your favorite weekly shows, DVD-RAM discs are a great choice as they can be rewritten more times than DVD-RW/+RW discs.) In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES25S can play back CD-R/RW, dual layer DVD-R/+R, and VCD disc formats as well as JPEG, and MP3 digital formats.

Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.

The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections

Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function when using DVD-RAM discs. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

Enjoy a great picture on you flat screen LCD or plasma HDTV using the component video output, and immersive surround sound via the optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS home theater effects. The full lineup of video and audio connections includes: <ul>

    <b>Tech Talk</b>
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

    <b>What's in the Box</b>
DVD recorder/VCR, remote control (with batteries), AV cable, RF cable, power cord, one DVD-RAM disc, printed operating instructions

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Solid Performance.......2007-05-23

This unit performs well in the "Copy VHS to DVD" function, VCR and DVD playback and the DVD recording function. The picture (from both sources) looks sharp and clear on my Samsung 56" 1080p DLP set.The VCR FF/RW functions are quick if not a little noisey. It really is a "Feature Packed" unit but the owners manual is a bit convoluted and takes a little study in order to properly understand the flow of information, i.e. the unit does a good job at editing DVD's once you find the procedure in the book.
All in all, this unit far surpasses the performances of any other unit in it's price range that we have researched.

5 out of 5 stars Easy VCR to DVD.......2007-05-14

I don't like to lend old, treasured movies on VHS because they often fail to find their way back home. After complicated attempts to duplicate through a computer/video device I had almost given up. After reading the specs on Panasonic's DMR-ES35VS combo unit, I decided to give it a try. The very first attempt was so easy I couldn't believe it. I've backed up several of my old tapes now and played back the DVDs - excellent quality. I highly recomment this model to anyone concerned about losing their old movies due to changing technology.

    4 out of 5 stars DVD/VCR.......2007-05-13

I enjoy using the Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder/player. The Remote Control and the instructions are complex and require much attention for using it. A user-friendle enhancement would help.

5 out of 5 stars Don't understand the negitive ones.......2007-04-27

It dose and has paused for me while recording out comercials. The remote is a little hard to understand but for the most part it is well worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Yet Another Poorly Designed DVD Recorder.......2007-04-16

Solid machine. Well-designed, intuitive menus, decent picture. At first glance it is way better than most BUT...the idiots who designed this thing made it incapable of editing recordings! For example: if you want to make a compilation of home movies from your camcorder, or remove the commercials from an old video-taped television show you CANNOT DO IT. Once the machine is recording you cannot pause it or even stop it. There is now way around it. You cannot stop the recording and start it again bacause if you stop the recording before the machine thinks it has finished it finalizes the disc for you! Automatically! What were they thinking? I imagine that the vast majority of people buy these things in order to do just what I described in my example and this machine will not do it. This is a total waste of money. The 2 star rating is only because the menus and remote control are far, far superior to any other model. What it does it does very well, it just doesn't do much. BOO.
(The best all-around model is the LG by the way but Amazon does not seem to have it...go to Best Buy or something).
