Product Description
Although many DVD discs on the market offer widescreen display, they are not necessarily high-definition. If you want to get optimal video results from DVD on your HDTV set, HD-DVD is the format that's set to deliver resolutions up to 1080p for top visuals. High Definition video requires a tremendous amount of space on a disc, thus a new Blue laser (versus a Red Laser for DVD) is utilized for HD DVD. The blue laser, with its shorter wave length, allows for information to be stored more densely on the disc, thus improving storage capacity by about over 3 times compared to that of a red laser technology. Additionally, more accurate and efficient video compression like MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1. (based on Microsoft Windows Media) compress information to achieve file sizes that are less than half of those of the current standard DVD's MPEG2. Enjoy backwards compatibility and play your collection of standard DVDs on the player. In addition, via the HDMI interface, the HD-XA2 scales the standard definition DVD output to a resolution of 720p, 1080i or 1080p to match your HDTV's performance. Not only does this output the video in HD standard resolution, but because the conversion takes place in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. The HD-XA2 has built-in processors to handle the multi-channel decoders for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS and DTS HD (core only). Move up to High Definition play with HD-DVD and upgrade your home for true home-theater enjoyment. Includes backlit remote control Unit Dimensions 17.2? x 13.58? x 2.91? - Home-theater component stackable Many movies are now available in HD-DVD format
Customer Reviews:
The best entertainment device in ages.......2007-06-12
This player is a leap above everything else. I really can't begin to explain how amazing even your old DVD movies look with this player. If you have a 1080P it's a must have, especially if you don't want to have to upgrade your favorite old DVD's. The quality is amazing. Overall very impressed.
Very Good.......2007-06-06
This is very good product so far I have owned different HD upconversion players but from the HD upconverions and HD Disc player, I find HD-XA2 do better. With the format war going on between HD and Blu Ray it is the early seekers gamble. I liked all features except the remote control which designed very pathetic for the money spent on buying the player. I got universal remote and works really good. Picture quality is amazing on the 60" Pioneer Plasma get 1080i/p and so is the sound quality on the Onkyo connected to Bose Accoustic mass.
Cons: Remote control and slow startup and disc remembering feature, as it does remember where the scene was left if we power off.
Overall for early divers into technology it is a very good buy.
Excellent Player.......2007-06-02
I have had absolutely NO problems with the Toshiba XA2 and am using it to display thru a projector onto a 120" 16:9 screen. The latest firmware have not addressed all the issues related to the LFE audio 5.1 analog output but this is minor to me personally since Toshiba will eventually address this with a FW update in the future.
Don't hold your breath for the free DVDs.......2007-05-25
Another one of those rebate black holes. Called their customer service line and they can't find the paperwork. Would not use this "bonus" as any reason to buy a Toshiba product.
Incredible.......2007-05-24
I recently bought the HD-XA2 HD DVD player and could not be happier. I have a Samsung 40" LCD HDTV LN-T4061F which displays at 1080P to match with the player and the picture is incredible. Color, depth, smoothness, everything is almost too good. I have HD Cable which only broadcasts in 1080i at max is rough to look after watching HD through this player. My sound system is OK, I have a pioneer 5.1 system that is run through an optical cable and what comes out is incredible, but I really want a new system that has HDMI and can run Dolby TrueHD. Any suggestions? To all those who complain about load time...it is not that bad, maybe 30 seconds, go get a drink while you are waiting. I have had no problems with the player before and after I uploaded the latest firmware update and have had no problems with time delay with the remote. This machine is awesome, try watching Troy, even if you do not like the movie, it is like looking at live action. I can not wait to see Matrix on HD DVD. For comparison, I did have the XBOX360 HD DVD player, it was OK. It played fine, but the picture was flat compared to the 3-D like images on the Toshiba. In part because of the lack of HDMI. I also have a friend that has PS3 and I am not too impressed. The picture is good, but blu-ray seems to lack the color and contrast depth that I see in HD DVD. We will see what happens in the future. This player also upconverts very well, but even the best upconverted movie does not touch my HD DVD's. To sum up, this player is worth every penny, I have had no problems except taking my face of the TV!
