Ease The Cable Nightmare..........2007-06-05
My previous USB Hub was a well known brand and all peripheral devices would slow down or the unit would become very warm/hot when I tried to use all of it's ports at the same time;even peripherals with their own power supplies would put a strain on it. This product will take just about all you can give it. I cannot comment on it's portable properties or the wear and tear that the hub would be subjected to as a portable device; the shell is a sturdy plastic. Quite frankly,I have never had a desire to take my hub with me in that I use it only as a fixed part of my desk top PC setup. All of that plugging and unplugging does not appeal to me, at all;to each his own. I do want to address one particular issue that has been brought up by some reviewers and that is the length of the included cable. I do not want to be too simplistic in my answer, however,I do believe that the hub maker assumes that you already have long connector cables and includes a cable that will reach from your peripheral device to the hub on your desk top. In other words, switch cables! For example, remove your long cable presently going from an external HD/out to the PC and use it to connect to the HUB/OUT port. Next, use the included shorter cable to re-connect the external HD/OUT to one of the HUB/IN ports; how long a cable does one need to connect two units on a desk top? The bright pilot light will let you know when things are going well. If it dims, you will know that the power drain is too high. I have not reached that point on the CTG 7 yet. I use two permanent external back up HDs,One 300GB Maxtor One Touch II and One 500GB AcomData Hybrid drive (My Favorite Drive)that powers up and down continuously as it is needed. That process will tax any power supply but is not a problem for this CTG-7 Port Hub! I also have one Samsung Super Writemaster external DVD writer and a Lexmark X8350 scan/fax/printer as well as the usual suspects including a DigiCam etc. There is also a variety of thumb drives which I sometimes connect three at a time which act as extra hard drives. There is also a Seagate 160GB SATA HDD, in an external case, that I use as my "Jeep Drive" to move files from one location to another, all running at the same time and not even a blink, never mind a dim down. Also,I appreciate the pre-drilled holes in the base which allows you to attach it to a wall or to the side of a cabinet. This is a very reliable unit and I am about to order a second for my friend's set up. You can spend a lot more money for a lot less return!
The best 7- port USB hub you will find.......2007-06-02
I have to agree with Carl Scharenberg's review!
After searching for the "perfect" hub, I found it here. I mounted it under the shelf above my laptop and it looks real good. The only thing I am wondering is why they sent tiny machine screws to use for mounting. I used a couple of countersunk wood screws instead.
I plugged in the power supply, and the cool blue light came on. Next I shut down my Dell Insiron laptop and plugged in all of the USB cables that run my CanoScan scanner, Seagate 250 gig external harddrive, wireless mouse, external CD/RW drive, HP laser printer, ThinkPad laptop (it shares my printer), 35-in-1 digital camera card reader, and my USB Powered and Most Efficient Aluminium Cooler Pad. With everything plugged in, I still have one port left empty for future use. You can also piggy-back another hub if you need more ports.
I turned on the Dell, and it found all of the "new" peripherials in about 45 seconds. This hub is truly plug & play. It's very well designed, and works flawlessly. You won't find a better one.
Great USB Hub.......2007-05-31
I bought this USB hub to supplement my laptop's 3 USB ports, dock's 4 ports, and monitor's 2 ports. So many USB devices these days! Anyways, the hub is very well made, and feels solid and sturdy. The case is solid aluminum, but does not bend inward if you apply pressure to it. I think it's much better than the cheap-feeling plastic hubs.
I also liked that the USB ports are decently spaced apart, unlike on the Kensington dome model. While the Kensington dome hub is more aesthetically pleasing, the spacing does not work, because not all USB devices are "permanent". What I mean by this is that certain devices, such as USB flash drives are meant to be removed. With this hub, I have it mounted vertically on my bookcase, so that the devices attached to the bottom are corded and permanent, while the devices attached to the top are my two flash drives.
Unfortunately, the included screws are flat-tipped rather than self-drilling (pointy tipped). Of course, you can buy the pointy-tipped screws for 15 cents a piece at a hardware store, but it's still bothersome.
Lots of extra USB ports with a tiny footprint.......2007-05-13
If you're looking for a lot of extra ports for all your USB devices and don't want some big space age looking thing on your desk taking up space, then this USB Hub is for you!
After doing some fairly extensive research on USB Hubs, I found that most all of them are pretty large. I wasn't sure why, but they were. Then I checked out Amazon.com and found this little USB hub with 7 ports on it! Exactly what I was after. Plus it works on a Mac and PC so I could use it on my PowerMac that's got Windows running on it. Perfect!
My one complaint is that if you change USB devices a lot, the hub might slide off it's little base. Not a big deal, but worth noting if you're going to be plugging in and unplugging USB devices frequently.
Has Worked Flawlessly.......2007-05-09
I have had problems in the past with powered USB hubs, including cutting off communication to one device by plugging in another device, insufficient power to run an external hard drive, and damage to devices apparently from unstable power to the hub. I have had no such problems with this hub, which has worked flawlessly so far (about 2 1/2 months).
