Customer Reviews:
Disappointed with this trackball.......2007-06-12
I have the other logitech trackball at work (the one with only two buttons), and I am very happy with it. So I decided to try this one out.
I don't like it at all for the following reasons:
1. Construction feels cheap
2. Thumb(main) button takes quite a bit of force to push down and is in kind of a crevice, as well as being too far back. Those with larger hands may have trouble getting to it.
3. Tracking is off out of the box. There's a utility to fix it, but I never felt like it got it right.
4. Scroll wheel has too many "ticks" and is too hard to turn. "Cruise Control" buttons are fragile and too small to use effectively.
5. The highlight locking button is utterly useless, as it requires you to move your hand from the natural position to get to it.
6. Unlike the other logitech trackball, this one gets dirty easily and lost its smooth motion after 5 minutes of use out of the box
7. Wireless was a negative for me. Trackballs dont move around and my computer is just 12 inches away. Dealing with battery replacement sucks.
There are a lot of really positive reviews, but I can't say I agree with them.
Lag.......2007-06-05
I notice a slower response even up close and it stops responding about 12 feet away (non line of sight). The look of the mouse is very nice and I love the extra buttons. I wish they were programmable, but I wanted a cordless trackball and now I'm happy.
I am impressed.......2007-06-04
I transferred from a Microsoft Trackball Explorer. This Logitech trackball is a little different, but a good second choice. I do CADD design, and so far, the Logitech trackball is as accurate and easy to use as the MTE. My only gripe is about the placement of the scroll-wheel. I use it in CADD as a pan command, and I had to reprogram that command to another button to make it easier to use. Also, the range seems to max out at ten feet. not a problem for me, but maybe you want to know.
Think twice... if you have a Mac. Other problems abound........2007-06-03
I bought this trackball mouse to:
1.) Limit movement of wrist
2.) Limit rotation of forearm by holding trackball mouse in semi-'handshake' position on my lap. The goal here being to limit use of the pronator teres muscle to avoid possible nerve entrapment. Holding the mouse in one's lap also avoids excessive bending of the elbow... which may help prevent Cubital Tunnel syndrome (but please don't take my words as medical advice)
This mouse fails with respect to 2.)
Holding the mouse in one's lap necessitates some sort of orientation calibration... but this is not available in the Mac OS X drivers Logitech provides!!
Additionally, the movement of the cursor is just not smooth enough for me... sometimes too jittery, ESPECIALLY in comparison to the ergonomic Microsoft mouse I bought as a replacement.
Also, no horizontal scrolling? Lack of horizontal scrolling severely limits usefulness in photo editing, video editing, PDF file reading, etc. In fact, IMHO, 360 degree scrolling should become a standard... & this mouse is far from it.
Finally, the feel & placement of the buttons is 'just not right'. In fact, I enjoyed using the good old corded 2-button Marble Mouse trackball by Logitech. It felt great, and it was even smoother... lack of scrolling, though, makes it a non-option for me.
I was extremely disappointed. I would still like to find a good trackball mouse to limit my wrist movement, but, for now, it will be the rather excellent ergonomic (entire mouse is rotated a bit clockwise) Microsoft cordless laser mouse in conjunction with an extruding arm rest from my desk.
Also, people, please take ergonomics seriously. You never know... you could lose a hand.
Shotty trackball.......2007-06-02
I've been spoiled by the now discontinued MS Trackball Explorer - it's true. This trackball mouse doesn't allow any personalization in the way of programmable buttons or anything, which might be acceptable in the absence of any other similarly configured trackball, but when the left click button dies this input device is rendered useless. This happened to me less than 6 months from purchasing it new through Amazon and Logitech hasn't responded to my support queries at all. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A TRACKBALL!!!!! Cough up the dough and get a used Trackball Explorer (mines still going strong with never an issue in 7 years).
