Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although Children of Men glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history. --Jeff Shannon

Great flick that delivers on many levels - fantasy, suspense, politics, philosophy.. The 'three faction clash' scene was breathtaking.

The world has gone to hell after a flu pandemic (barely touched upon in the movie) and an apparent nuclear attack on U.S. soil. Britain alone stands tall as the last beacon of civilization. The movie co-opts the book's science fiction premise (humanity has lost the ability to procreate) and spins it as an anti-fascist fairytale about illegal immigration and border control. The central conflict in the movie has more to do with immigrants seeking shelter in Britain, rather than the child (the first in almost 20 years!) conceived and carried by one of the central characters. It certainly doesn't help matters that the woman carrying the child isn't a very compelling character, and that the most intriguing characters are killed pretty regularly throughout the film.

If I hadn't read P.D. James's novel beforehand, would I have had a different opinion of the movie? Perhaps--the dystopian world created by the filmmaker is beautifully filmed, and the acting (esp. Michael Caine in a scene-stealing role) is top-notch. On its own, it might have worked for me. As an adaptation, though, the movie feels like a wasted opportunity to bring an excellent novel to life. The book--The Children of Men--is everything that the movie is not: complex, thoughtful, and filled with suspense over the future of the human race.

Starting off well, I was settling in for a nice, old-school dystopia movie. Although having some nice characters outlined, the movie really never went anywhere and just got bogged down in recyling violence after awhile. Most shockingly was the cop-out ending that couldn't even give a face to or a creative explanation for the "Human Project" or whatever it was called. Quite disappointed they couldn't even put a mildly stimulating story behind the idea (well, they couldn't even give a reasonable explanation for the TOTAL sterility, that was lame too).

This movie starts slow. I cant deny that. I think the writer knew what he wanted for the middle and the end but wasnt sure how to get there. But if you can sit through the first half an hour or so with an open mind and a slightly puzzled look this becomes one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in ages. The war scenes are some of the most impressive I've ever seen. Something like you'd imagine from the holocaust. And then if you grasp the dozens of messages that the movie sends, Hope, the potential cruelty of man, the strenght of man, the miracle of life. It's really very beautiful.
