If Jonny, Haji, Race Bannon, and the rest of the Jonny Quest gang were idiots, their animated adventures might play out like The Venture Bros., a consistently funny spoof on '60s adventure cartoons from the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming. The premise should be immediately familiar and nostalgic for any Saturday morning TV aficionado who grew up in the '60s and '70s: Dr. Venture (James Urbaniak from Henry Fool) is an inventor, while sons Hank and Dean's insatiably curiosity lands them in hot water with supervillains, robots, magicians, and the like. Brock Sampson (voiced by the very funny Patrick Warburton of The Tick) is the good doctor's right-hand man, who rescues the boys with good old-fashioned manpower. The twist in The Venture Bros. is that every single character, down to the supervillains' henchmen, are complete and utter dolts, and their adventures are inspired more by foolishness, personal obsessions (for Brock, it's sex and violence, and for Dr. V, it's diet pills and a daddy fixation), or just plain cosmic weirdness than any sense of post-Kennedy-era adventure and derring-do. The result is subversive and occasionally shocking insanity (Dr. V loses his kidneys in the series opener "Dia de Los Dangerous"; Dean suffers an unmentionable personal injury in "Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean"; the boys believe that Dr. Venture's stomach tumor is actually a pregnancy in "Return to Spider Island"), but with enough flashes of surreal brilliance to make this a must-have for modern animation fans. The Season One two-disc set contains all 13 episodes, as well as two bonus episodes--the show's original pilot, "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay" (for Hank and Dean, the secret is something decidedly salacious), and "A Very Venture Christmas," as well as a handful of deleted scenes. Commentary by the show's creators and cast can be heard on five episodes, including "Turtle Bay," and the extras are rounded out by "Behind the Scenes of the Live-Action Movie," a 20-minute mockumentary that features much of the voice-over talent dressed in some ridiculous costumes. --Paul Gaita

Description

Once a child prodigy, Dr. Venture now fails as both a scientist and father. Luckily, his twins, Hank and Dean are too stupid to care. Brock really likes the booby traps.
DVD Features:

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest shows ever.......2007-06-13

The previous reviews have the premise and quality nailed, but what is often overlooked is the genius of the timing and editing of this show. It just pops from moment to moment and never misses a beat. Lots of cinematic techniques are used and used well (split screens, etc.) One of the most perfectly executed shows I've ever seen, and totally hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have for any collection.......2007-06-08

If you prize the funny and brilliant, you will want this set. Incredible replay potential as well, as I never get tired of this season or season two for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars Really goofy Action-hero type show...but good.......2007-05-28

Yopu have to be in a silly mood, but when you are, this is a great series to watch. Some really off-beat humor, right from the first scene of the first show...and then it keeps on going.

Obvious althought this is a cartoon, it is NOT for young children...but at some age (when they can understand it all), even kids (teens) would really get a major kick out of it. It has some vulgarity, so if you are one of those people who live in a "bubble" and cannot handle curse words (even on occassion) then I would pass. But for those that live in the real world, and accept that cursing can add emphasis to comedic timing (even if you don't curse yourself) then you will enjoy this series well (assuming it is your type of humor....sort of a Mad-magazine meets Justice League meets South Park sort of thing (not nearly as much swearing as South Park though).

It's a perfect way to decompress and lighten your mood.

5 out of 5 stars I'd Venture to say..........2007-05-21

Quite possibly the most brilliant cartoon spoof EVER created (and this coming from a foaming at the mouth fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and unquestionably the BEST send-up of all the `60s and early `70s Hanna-Barbara "serious" cartoons.

If you liked Johnny Quest as a kid, you'll LOVE the Venture Bros.

If you watched ANY of Hanna-Barbara's slap-dash animated abominations like the Herculoids or Space Ghost (the original series not Cartoon Network's Space Ghost Coast to Coast) you roar yourself horse with laughter at the misadventures of the Venture Bros.

Want proof?

Ok.

One name, Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld's Puddy) as Race Bannon knock-off Brock Samson.

Brock Samson is the ultimate spy/secret agent cliché. He mocks not only cartoon characters such as the aforementioned Bannon but James Bond, Matt Helm and every other spy/secret agent type ever imagined.

Samson's only "official" weapon is his oversized hunting knife but he can be seen wielding as weapons everything from his 1969 Dodge Charger to a lawn mower.

And don't get me started on the villains. The Monarch, Baron Underbheit and Phantom Limb transcend inspired.

Hell even the infrequently recurring characters like Master Billy Quizboy and Pete White the albino scientists are comic gold.

As to plots and adventures, just recall the kinds of plots and adventures of Johnny Quest. If you haven't seen or are unfamiliar with Johnny Quest a good bit of the show will be lost on you. Sorry.

In a departure form the more serious fare I've been reviewing of late I've taken a hiatus from the historical and wanted to pen a review of a show who's episodes I can watch over and over again.

This review applies equally to both seasons of the Venture Bros.

4 out of 5 stars I heart Dean Venture.......2007-05-16

Since I bought this dvd, I've watched it beginning to end fourteen times. The creator commentary is delightful, but I wish there were more episodes included. The extra material, though interesting, also left a smidgeon to be desired. Get this dvd, love this dvd, and don't forget about Season 2!
