5 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed.......2007-05-08

Pros:
Prints on CD's.
HP, therefore no clogged cartridges.

Cons:
Tacky label on CD door.
Power brick instead of a PC power plug, I hate bricks.

I downloaded the basic HP driver instead of using the included CD, still it was 31MB. Never tried the HP CD label software, didn't care.

I used CorelDraw v9 to create my CD image. Its print preview allowed me to center the image on the CD and with HP's print preview the first CD print was 99% perfect. My gradients showed some banding, but Corel only allowed 256 steps. I also created a DVD case insert using pre-perforated A4 card stock. Looks like it came off a printing press.

I think the CD scratches mentioned before are related to the tacky CD door label. It is not at all obvious the door exists and if you insert the CD tray below that door, no telling what mayhem will occur. So my guess that the label was a stop the flood of complaints measure by HP.

I placed my 5160 on the lower shelf of my coffee table. But to do so, I had to remove the cover to be able to replace the ink. Had to remove the left and right ends, a small back panel and two little hinge inserts. Not a single screw was used, just like a car dash. The boys and girls in Boise are doing some classy product design.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a CD/DVD printing solution from HP!.......2007-04-27

I've been using an Epson R300 for a while for its CD printing facilities. Epson's printers have been pretty much the only game in town when it comes to inkjet printable CDs, so I've put up with it until now. When I found out about the D5160 I *rushed* out to buy one. It just happened to be dirt cheap which made the deal all that much sweeter.

Why do I hate Epson printers so much? I've been using them since the original Stylus Photo, and absolutely nothing has changed. My R300 had the exact same problems: poor paper loading and frequently clogging print heads if you don't print frequently. Add a new twist with the CD printing: the printer had trouble grabbing the CD tray. Ugh.

HP printers like the D5160, in contrast, don't have as many ink clogging issues because every time you buy a new ink cartridge, you are buying a new print head. And on the paper loading side, I've never had problems with HP's front-loading mechanisms. It's also such a nice space saving design compared to the Epson that took up half my desk. The D5160 has no problems taking the CD tray. Ahh, bliss. Another plus is the D5160 has a USB 2.0 card reader. The R300's was USB 1.1.

The only negative I can say is, when running Vista, you are forced to download the software from the web. The "full" web software package does not seem to include a tool to print onto CDs. I generally make up my CD labels in photoshop, this nudged me to get myself set up with a working template. So really it's a good thing as it will save me time being able to print directly from Photoshop. I have printed many CDs with my new printer and have not experienced any issues with scratching. I'm not even sure how the bottom of the CD could become scratched in the caddy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent printer, terrible software.......2007-04-10

I have been using this printer for a few weeks now and overall I'm pretty happy with it. I purchased mostly for the CD/DVD printing feature and so far I have not been disappointed: it is fast, high quality and relatively inexpensive when it comes to ink. No scratches or any damage whatsoever to the CD as some people has told.
When it comes to printing photos, well, I would say it is average, as most injet printers. Nothing to do with professional prints made at your local drugstore and more for case of emergency.
My only complaint: the softare. It not only takes ages to install and requires a lot of hard disk space, it also is almost useless. When trying to design a DVD cover there are only a couple of options: one text box or no text; one picture or no picture; background or no background; regular CD/DVD or mini DVD. That's it! no more options, no customization possible. Other designs (photos, etc) are also very limited. I just went ahead and purchased a thirds party solution and voila!

4 out of 5 stars My experience with DVD printing.......2007-03-26

I bought this printer for printing DVD's. I have printed about 30 dvd's so far and am reasonably satisfied.

I print five lines of text, not whole disks. On the properties page, under Ink Volume, I reduce it by one click. The ink used so far does not show up at all on the status...still full.

It takes about 30 seconds to print a dvd. Print quality, except for below, is good.

However, there are some problems:

Software install is disgustingly slow. This is inexcusable for a professional level product.

When I first got the printer and printed solid black text, it was somewhat blurry. I contacted HP customer support and they were excellent. They emailed me a test sequence to run, determined that the hardware was bad, all within a few hours. They offered to replace it, but I had just bought it from a local vendor and took the emails to them and they did a swap for a new printer. The new printer works perfectly.

If the disk is rotated at all in the carrier, it will show scratch marks, even though the carrier feels very smooth. Perhaps it's the type of plastic used.

I have an HP color laser and it's fantastic. This product is pretty good(seems to be better than Epson), but not up to the engineering quality level of the laser.

1 out of 5 stars CD/DVD adapter scratches discs.......2007-03-04

This is a pretty package - it looks pretty, prints pretty, acts pretty. I bought it mainly for use in printing directly onto CDs and DVDs. Out of the 25 or so DVDs I've printed (using Maxell inkjet printable DVD-Rs), less than half of them have worked. (They look great, don't get me wrong.) But the CD/DVD adapter definitely scratches the discs and in the majority of cases, renders them useless. This was a waste of money. I should have gone with my instincts and bought the Epson instead.
