Product Description

Imagine printing photos - right from your desktop - with photolab quality. The BJC-8200 Color Bubble Jet Photo Printer delivers spectacular results with ease and finesse. In fact, this incredible desktop printer is one of the most advanced in the world, featuring numerous technological breakthroughs that enable you to output photos that are simply amazing. The BJC-8200 printer features 1,536 nozzles per printhead, making ink application faster, more precise and detailed. This Microfine Droplet Technology actually applies ink drops just 4 picoliters in size. So whites are whiter, details and highlights are more brilliant, and complex, multilevel gradations are now a reality. The built-in Image Optimizer smoothes jagged edges, sharpens lines and borders and enhances overall clarity and quality. And Photo Optimizer automatically cleans up highlights, details, contrast and shadowing without altering your original photo. So photos become bolder and more distinct - just how you intended. The BJC-8200 printer was designed with many advanced features that make printing easier than ever. It features the Canon Think Tank System - an intelligent ink-management system that automatically eliminates ink waste and saves you money. It uses individual ink tanks for each color, so you replace only the color that runs out. And its unique optical low-ink sensor alerts you when ink is low, so you can pop in another tank just at the right time. You can also swap the ink tank with Canon's optional IS-52 Color Image Scanner Cartridge and instantly turn your printer into a 600 dpi sheetfed scanner.

Amazon.com Product Description

Equipped with built-in USB and parallel ports and both Mac and PC compatible, the BJC 8200 is an ideal companion to your desktop or laptop. You'll print crisp text and true colors on photo paper, transparencies, and much more with this sleekly designed, small, light printer.

Setup and installation are smooth and easy with the Canon Quick Start Guide. The ink cartridges are easy to install but require several more steps than usual because each tank is installed separately. However, the ink management system minimizes waste and saves you money; you replace only the color that runs out. We also like the reassurance of the low-ink sensor, which sends a message when the ink is low so you can refill before you start a new project.

Print speeds are approximately a minute for 4-by-6-inch prints and up to 3 minutes for an 8-by-10-inch print. The 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution in black and color produces vibrantly colored and detailed photo prints. The unit's auto feed speeds production, holding about 100 sheets of plain paper and 80 pages of high-resolution photographic paper. The BJC 8200 runs a little loud for our taste, but who could resist a remarkably fast, commanding little printer, enabling you to print high-quality photos in your home or office?Although the BJC-8200 has a highly intuitive interface, you may need to consult the manual to use some functions. We prefer having a hard copy of the user's reference at hand, but Canon's guide is online. The BJC-8200 printer includes a creative software applications CD-ROM featuring printer setup guide and Canon Photo. It prints on a wide range of paper types, including PhotoPaperPro, brilliant white, Bubble Jet, banner papers, envelopes, fabric sheets, greeting and glossy photo cards, glossy photo paper, high-gloss photo film, and high-resolutionand plain paper, transparencies, and magnetic sheets. We didn't try them all but if results remain consistent, the outcome is sure to impress even the master photographer.

5 out of 5 stars A review 5 years down the line.......2005-04-14

My brother bought a Canon BJC-8200, five years ago, and after a while he outgrew it and passed it onto me. It's amazing that a printer that was created in 2000 can produce pictures (and regular documents) with such a high quality even by 2005 standards. It amazes me that in the time that I've used this printer, I've gone through 3 different computers. I figured it was about time that I sang it's praises.

The most indispensable (and money saving) feature of this printer, is the separate ink cartridges. It blows my mind that to this day printers are produced that use all-in-one color cartidges, making you replace an entire color cartridge if you just run out of just the magenta ink. Even if you don't buy this printer, this feature should be a requirement in whichever printer you do buy. Also, this printer is durable and produces very high quality prints.

There are a couple of drawbacks. The printer is a bit slower than the newer models that are available. It also doesn't support direct memory card and digital camera printing. Realistically though, I don't know one person that uses this feature on their printers as most prefer to adjust and crop the pictures on their computer before printing.

The printer wasn't expensive when it was first released, and you can see that you can now pick up a used one for the price of a couple of tickets to a movie. Not a bad purchase for people on an extremely tight budget that want to print photos at home.

4 out of 5 stars Improve the Ink!!!.......2002-01-26

I specifically wanted this printer for photos and the quality is certainly very good. However, the inks used by Canon have very little UV protection and are susceptible to fading fairly quickly in a sunlit room. Otherwise, I had some minor installation problems and the printer is on the slow side, especially compared to my Lexmark. The Canon has superior color accuracy and it is a pleasure not to have to pay $(...)+ for ink refills. I would not recommend it for daily black and white typing duties, but for photos it is a superior product.

5 out of 5 stars cartridge and paper buying difficulties.......2001-09-07

This is a great printer, but I am having a hard time buying paper or ink cartridges other than on the web. At say, Circuit City or Office Max, almost all of the paper is for ink jets. The only Canon paper I have seen is the Canon Glossy Photo Paper, which is OK, but not as good as Photo Paper Pro. I did find BCI-5 ink cartridges at Circuit City, but these are discontinued and there were no BCI-6s in sight.

5 out of 5 stars falling in love again.......2001-03-28

I purchased the Canon BJC-8200 several months ago and i fell in love with it. Often you buy a product and it does not live up to the manufacturers claims. This printer does. The picture quality even at maximum elargement is , in a word, fantastic. I have a mid-range non professional digital camera and the printer produced outstanding professional looking copies. I took some pictures of a friends wedding and sent the pictures to them, they were thrilled with the prints. They could not believe this quality from a home printer. I believe at any price you wont find a better product. The separate Ink cartridges, a must for anyone. It flat out saves money. The ease of use, incredible. I am no pro, but you would never believe that if you saw the prints from this product. Look no further, buy this, you will be happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Photo quality... almost.......2001-02-15

This printer is excellent.

I am using it with windows 2000 (for which the setup is a little messy and none of the distributed software installs) and a Canon S100. I use ULead's PhotoExplorer 6.0 (freeware) for printing 4 pics on a 8x11.

The print depends heavily on the paper being used; with the best quality print being gained from the Canon Photo Pro paper that comes with the printer. The print is indistinguishable from a photo ! Especially if you do some software trickery of resampling the image to a higher resolution.

One noticeable problem is that the pictures are a little washed out. The Photo Optimizer setting makes the picture a little darker (puts more black) and gives the illusion of greater detail.

The printer is also very slow ! But that doesnt really bother me.

Otherwise the printer is VERY economical to run especially with Best Buy's buy 2 cartridges get 3rd free !
