Amazon.com Review

Hewlett-Packard's OfficeJet T45 is a solid mainstream multifunction ideal for home office users. This affordable model combines 600 x 300 dpi color ink-jet printing, 300 x 300 dpi 24-bit color scanning, faxing, and color copying capabilities. With a small footprint, simple setup, and easy-to-use software bundle, the T45 is an excellent solution for small businesses. Plus, it's designed for a strong duty cycle of 3,000 printed pages per month.

Opening the unit's top cover causes the print carriage to automatically position itself for cartridge loading. The unit takes separate color and ink cartridges, which snap in easily. The software CD provided us a well-integrated interface for both learning about the product and installing the software bundle. The T45 ships with I.R.I.S. optical character recognition software and Q & A PhotoRecall Deluxe image-editing software.

When a page is inserted into the input tray of the T45, the HP OfficeJet Manager is automatically launched to assist you in faxing, copying, scanning, or e-mailing the document. While this utility certainly helps to make the machine easy to use, we found many operations are much faster when done directly through the unit's console versus through the PC.

The T45 uses a parallel connection to connect to your PC and a phone line to provide fax functions. We set up the T45 in just a few minutes. We copied a standard black and white page in 35 seconds locally, but it took a minute and twenty seconds when copied through the Manager program. Color copies took a minute and fifteen seconds through the console and three minutes using the Manager. The speed difference is due to the fact that, when operating from the Manger, the T45 scans pages before printing the copies.

Our 10-page plain-text document averaged 3 ppm when printed in normal mode, a bit below the unit's rated 5 ppm. We also scanned 4-by-6-inch photos in a snappy 25 seconds each.

The T45 produces good performance suitable for most environments. The output quality is also right on the mark for units at this price. We were impressed with the unit's control panel, which features a numeric keypad and LCD panel, as well as prominent fax, copying, and scanning buttons. Separate color and black copy buttons reduces the need to switch settings between jobs.

The HP OfficeJet T45 is a great way to get all of your input and output needs met on a budget. Backed by HP's excellent reputation and mature technology, the T45 is a reliable companion. --Stephen W. Plain

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Printer with Low Ink Cost Per Page.......2007-04-27

I've had this printer forever and it keeps chugging along. I recently purchased a new HP All-In-One, the HP L7780, to get its wireless capability, higher print speed, flatbed scanner and Windows Vista drivers. Although the new printer has better print quality and wireless, the cost per page for ink usage is almost double that of the T45.

I was shocked when I did the calculations, but they are correct. If you need a printer for all round use, but not necessarily photo quality output, you can't beat this old classic. Drivers for the T45 are available up through Windows XP.

5 out of 5 stars I'm really angry.......2007-04-07

I purchased my T45 in 1998, and have loved it ever since. Never once have I had a paperjam or any other problem. It was up and running in minutes, and the quality of print and photo is fantastic....

However....... I just bought a new computer with Windows Vista. I asked the salesperson if I'd be able to use my HP printer, and he said yes, you'd just need to go to the HP website and download the drivers for my particular model. I went to the website, where they had a list of printer model numbers.... and all you had to do was click on yours and it would bring up the drivers for downloading. When I clicked on the T45 a message came up saying that because this model is more than 7 years old, there will be no drivers provided for Vista. If you have Vista, you will have to buy something newer.

Boy am I pissed... I realize this is their way of forcing people to buy more of their products, but who do they think they are deciding for everyone that a machine that works flawlessly must be replaced?

The new computer is non-returnable because the CompUSA where I bought it is going out of business and all purchases were final...

So now I have this fabulous printer/scanner/copier/fax machine that I cannot use and don't want to replace. Furthermore, as a college student I don't have the funds to replace it anyway.

I emailed HP and told them I had had problems with them from the get-go (concerning my HP computer), and that this was the final straw... that I would likely have to find a way now to buy a new printer. But I assured them it would not be one of theirs.

They even had the gall, when the page popped up saying they would not provide drivers for Vista for this product, to include a link to their line of printers so you could buy one of their new ones...

The greed of this industry is pathetic..

5 out of 5 stars Obsolete and 'old' does not = the need to replace!.......2006-12-08

I have owned my T45 since late 1999, and thought it might be of interest to people considering buying a used one, to hear about how well this machine has stood the test of time for me. I use it at home for personal and small business functions - and I use them all. Printing, copying, scanning (though the built-in OCR software is rendered inoperative in the long-ago upgrade to Windows XP and needed to be replaced with other proprietary OCR software) and the FAX - which I use only to SEND because the high-speed connection does sot sync with being able to use it to receive faxes. For that, I use the free version of eFax. This machine has never let me down.
Often, I have caught myself looking at the sales in the Sunday ads for a new multi-function (or, as they are now called, all-in-one machines) - then I remind myself - there is nothing wrong with the one I have! Oh, I suppose cosmetically it's old-style beige is a clash with the newer black PC outfit - but if I am going to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a new gadget or toy - it might as well be on something I really need!
The cartridges are still available - both from HP as well as from various 'refillers'; the print quality is very good the photos I print myself (using premium HP paper) come out quite nicely. and the FAX and copying work flawlessly.
Yes, it is heavy- but I don't have much need to move it!
So, if you need an 'all-in-one' and can find one of these puppies at a good price, you might save enough to buy a new digital camera.... or something else.
Like me - old does not = useless!

1 out of 5 stars T45 - A real junker!.......2004-07-22

I purchased the T45 fax machine about 2 years ago. 5 months after I purchased it, paper started jamming while sending a fax. Not only that, if I'd send a multi page fax, 2 or 3 pages would run through at the same time thus causing us to refax entire documents. Now every piece of paper that travels through the machine get's ripped up. I never write bad reviews, mostly because I never get lemons. This however takes the cake. The junker cake.

5 out of 5 stars Bulky but great.......2004-05-29

I've had this for about 4 years now and is still working like a charm. I have used this for printing, copying, scaning, and faxing mainly. For these, it is perfect!

EASE OF USE IS A PLUS!

However, for printing graphics and picures it does not have very high quality in comparison to my Cannon S800, which is used soley for that purpose.
Ink cartridges are still high priced for the T45.
