2 out of 5 stars Random Very Slow Burns .......2007-05-26

I don't know if I got another lemon but this drive often takes over an hour to burn 16X media. Minutes ago I just burned a Memorex DVD+RW 4X which took exactly ninety minutes to burn! My other drive a BenQ 16X drive burns all media at the rated speed.

With the Plextor it's like rolling dice, a 16X disc might burn at 16X or at 1.5X. It will burn some discs at 16X but others of the same brand and type will take forever. I tried buying the recommended discs (like Verbatim) but it makes no difference. There seems to be now way to tell which discs will burn normally and which will take an eternity.

I have tried 3 different drive cables; including the IDE Cable that came with the drive and it makes no difference. It seems to burn a little faster using Nero 6 than using Roxio Easy Media Creator 8. My BenQ beats it almost every time with every type of media.

I already spoke to and emailed tech support but their solution is to replace a brand new expensive drive with a refurbished one.

My drives are all correctly set in Ultra DMA Mode (not Pio). So far my old NEC 4X and Teac 8X drives have often beaten the Plextor in speed.

I should have known, from a bad experience with a Plextor CD_RW, years ago, with the drive and the tech support not to buy another Plextor Drive.

The Ben Q Drive costs half as much and works fine at the rated discs speeds.

Is it too much to ask, just to have a burner burn discs, at their rated speed.
I will never buy another Plextor drive!

5 out of 5 stars Not bad so far.......2007-05-14

I've only burned a few discs since purchasing this drive, but haven't had any problems yet. I've used Plextor drives in the past, and they're really reliable, which is why I purchased this one. I'm really looking forward to the features listed, although I suspect that many of them work in the background and are always unseen.

4 out of 5 stars A Slow Start With A Fast, Reliable Finish!.......2007-05-12

Installation of this new Plextor IDE drive was a breeze, and Windows XP welcomed the new device without complaint. The included PlexTools Professional software was also easy to install and offers a great deal of drive tweaking utilities that give a person customized control over any newer model Plextor optical drives they have in their system. This is a BIG plus over other drive manufacturer's offerings today. The drive is nice and quiet and has proved extremely reliable in the past few weeks that I have owned it; burning several CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R/DL disks without errors (none that are noticable anyway).

I only have two minor complaints about this drive. First, the tray eject speed of this drive is quite slugish. The PlexTools utility alows you to adjust this speed a touch, but even at the fastest speed setting it still crawls at a snails pace. I'm sure Plextor has a reason for this slow speed, but I honestly can't think of what it could be. The same pokey open/close speed is evedent on my new Plextor PX-755SA 16x DVD±R/RW Dual Layer SATA Internal DVD Drive as well.

My second complaint is regarding the time the drive takes to spin up a disk and begin accessing content. Whether it is a data or music disk, or even a store bought DVD movie, the drive sits there with the activity light blinking for several seconds before actually running the disk. This is certainly not a deal breaker, but it can prove frustrating from time to time.

Overall I am very happy with my new Plextor PX-760 optical drive. It is well built and easy to install, and comes with an impressive utility (PlexTools) to explore and adjust many extra features of this drive. I will not have the time to give details of the PlexTools utility at this time, but you can visit the Plextor website to learn all about it. It is certainly an incentive to purchase this or any other Plextor drive. The PX-760A/SW is a high-end device and is priced accordingly. While there may be cheaper drives, I think Plextor drives have established a proud history of reliability, speed, and complete user control/customization. It remains up to the individual as to whether or not they are willing to spend a few extra dollars for these added features and high-end build quality. I will personally be a return customer of Plextor drives. The minor complaints I listed above are the only reasons I did not give this drive a 5-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Plextor burning experience.......2007-04-05

Not being a professional, I can only reply as to my experience so far. I've only copied about a half dozen movies to date, and after the initial set up have had no problems so far. I use "1 Click DVD copy" for most copying. I do have one problem with the "DVD Cloner" program not recognizing this drive, but I don't believe this to be a problem with the drive. The drive does not seem to be critical in the type of media used as my last drive would not copy except on a Sony brand blank disc. Go fiqure. This drive came well packaged, and included a new ribbon tape connector for two drives. Hope this helps someone who is technically as challenged as I am. I can, and do recommend this purchase even though a little pricey. Bob

2 out of 5 stars Will Not Work Properly With Unsupported DVD Media.......2007-04-05

You pay almost twice the price that you pay for other DVD burners. Then you waste four or five DVD's before you find out by doing Internet research that it will not burn "unsupported" DVD media at highest speed. Of course, burning software should tell you that or adjust the burning speed for successful burn. However, that is too much to ask from free Roxio software that Plextor will give you. It is bad engineering on Plextor's part that they will even not bundle a single sheet of paper, saying up front that what media the burner will support!
