Portable Power.......2006-08-29

This laptop is, to say the least, a speed demon. It has specifications virtually identical to those of Apple's Macbook Pro, down to the screen size and resolution, but it has superior graphics hardware and the nifty fingerprint reader. Other things Apple has that HPQ doesn't includes an internal camera (iSight) and 800Mbps firewire. The lack of the first is unfortunate but not serious in a business laptop, and the lack of the second is more or less irrelevant given the very small number of available FW800 peripherals.
The system uses SATA for its hard drive, and the usual PATA/ATAPI for the optical drive. The DVD-RAM in the system is adequate, but slow at both burning DVDs and reading them. However, the 80GB and larger storage options (80GB being the default) are 7200 RPM drives, significantly improving hard disk transfer rates as compared to the usual 5200 RPM equipment.
The display is sharp and crisp, with dense pixel elements. The fingerprint reader is so far reliable and accurate. The system comes with software to create an encrypted volume, and it will export all of your encryption keys and similar so that you can back them up.
The main reason I got this machine, however, is the keyboard. Granted, it's not backlit like that of the Macbook, but it is a very large keyboard, with very good travel, and with a full numeric keypad. While no one is buying this system so that they can use it for gaming, if you do play strategy games, this is not a feature but a requirement. If you do choose to play games on it, you can rest assured that while not exactly top of the line today, the system's graphics are up to doing some fairly heavy lifting. This machine is primarily intended for use doing high-end professional work, like CAD.
Audio hardware is causing me some problems, with PowerDVD having issues with audio output, but the hardware itself is pro quality aside from the dinky inputs, offering 24 bits of precision and a 96kHz sampling rate. The unit may not have FW800, but it does have four high speed USB 2.0 ports, and even all of the ports on the optional docking station are high-speed. Even port layout is very thoughtful; nothing but ethernet is on the back, so you can get to everything even when the unit is docked.
One thing that might actually dissuade potential buyers is that this is an entirely legacy-free PC. No RS-232 Serial, no Centronics Parallel, no PS/2 keyboard and mouse. In fact, the only DIN plug on the unit is an S-Video output. If you are looking for a legacy-free laptop, this is an excellent candidate. If you have legacy peripherals, probably the best thing to do is to get a USB port replicator and cart it around with you, although individual dongles offering a single parallel port and like are available - they're just usually more expensive.
I give this laptop two thumbs up, and I'd buy it all over again, given the chance. I do slightly regret not waiting for Core 2 Duo, but the performance is well into the "acceptable" range and the machine is a knockout.
