Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, the HP Compaq Presario SR2170NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs as well as easy-to-use multimedia features. Focusing on affordability, this desktop provides room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM, available PCI and expansion slots, and access to a wide variety of peripherals via its four USB 2.0 ports. It's also chock-full of security and productivity software to get you going as soon as the PC's unpacked from its box, including Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 and Microsoft Works 8. You can also easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc, and manage your family's photo library with HP Photosmart Premier software.

Other features include a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 631 processor, 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 video processor (with 128 MB of dedicated memory), and a multiformat, dual-layer DVD burner (which can also create CDs) with LightScribe capability. It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, which delivers a safer, more reliable, and more productive computing environment. Vista integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

• Processor: While it's not as sexy as its newer multiple core siblings, this hyper-threading Intel Pentium 4 631 processor (3.0 GHz) still provides more than enough power and speed for home multimedia use and helps make this desktop an overall affordable package. It also features a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) This processor sits in the middle of its class (as of January 2007).

A hyperthreading processor helps a PC run several demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (parts of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance, such as faster reaction times in gaming applications, and enhanced multitasking.

• Hard Drive: The 160 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) is about average in size for desktop PCs. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).
• Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This desktop has a good 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB). Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
• DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

• Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio
Video is powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, which delivers stable and reliable visual power for business and communications applications as well as demanding 3-D games and hi-def video viewing. It features 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory and can provide up to 319 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 6 speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
For expansion, this desktop has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bays (available), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connections:

• 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 2 in rear)
• 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 1 headphone (front)
• 1 microphone/line-in/line-out (rear)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Basic is the operating system for users with basic computing needs, such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Preloaded Software
Includes Microsoft Works, Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update), Roxio Creator, DVD Play, and HP Total Care Advisor.

Dimensions & Weight
This desktop measures 7.15 x 16.25 x 15.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs approximately 24 pounds.

What's in the Box
The HP Compaq Presario SR2170NX desktop PC comes with a power cord, keyboard, and scroller mouse. It is backed by a one-year warranty for parts and labor from date of purchase, one-year technical phone service, and 90 days of software application support.

1 out of 5 stars Stick With Windows XP!.......2007-04-29

I bought one of these for my son through Office Max. Bad Video card. Returned it for another...same result. Money refunded, bought one from Best Buy, had it for two months...same problem. Nothing comes up on the monitor. The monitor works, because I swapped it to my PC. Took it back to Best Buy and they shipped it off to HP/Compaq. Still waiting. What a POS!

1 out of 5 stars Dead soon After Arrival........2007-03-24

I have been building & upgradeing computers sinse 1982, I know what I'm doing. This system had problems the moment I started to set it up. it would not restart properly, so using system restore was out of the question. As the system restore feature must have a faultless restart or the system will not restore. Beside with a brand new out of the box computer system you should not have to ever use system restore. The system is featureless, One dvd-rw no second DVD or CD drive. A small hard drive and a moderate amout of RAM. And only a trial version of Symantecs Norton Security Suite pre-installed, along with the bottom of the barrel Vista Basic, no other bundled software. One could barely call thios an entry level computer. within 3 weeks it won't even turn on, totally DEAD. I give this system 2 Thumbs Down. Absolutely "NO BANG" for Your Buck! They make you rate this compter or they won't display review. I won't even rate this computer with one star...I give This a "NO STAR" Rating!!!

5 out of 5 stars COMPAQ -yes -------- VISTA -no!!!!.......2007-03-24

For the money this is a great little unit. Absolutely no problems with it.Super fast shipping too! But; they probably were forced to put VISTA on it by Microsoft. VISTA won't recognize my printer (and I can't get drivers), my 1 1/2 year old genealogy program won't work (have to get a new version), my Office Suite won't work (have to get the new version), the Norton anti-virus I put on my XP professional system -- forget it--,AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST the spell check in the e-mail program with VISTA doesn't recognize the English language. No excuse for all of this with Microsoft's ability. Obviously making $$$$$ off of new programs. I'm using the Compaq for the net but am reverting back to my system with XP for the real workhorse.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this POJ.......2007-02-24

I wrote the following on February 23, 2007.
I bought this machine recently. Order was processed as promised. When I got the machine, I found the following issues:

1. Windows vista is a piece of junk. It is too big, clunky and slow. There is 1 GB of memory already installed and it is SLOOOOOW without running anything else.

2. It comes with windows media player 11. Every time WMP attempts to play a video (be it a file on the hard disk or a web page with embedded video), the machine just freezes. There is no blue screen of death. Just freezing. CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work. I had to unplug the power and plug it back in to start it back up again.

3. Any attempt to do anything with the CD/DVD drive, same as above: the machine just freezes. There is no blue screen of death. Just freezing. CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work. I had to unplug the power and plug it back in to start it back up again.

4. On the first day of attempting to set it up and trying various things, I would have gone through the unpluging/plugging cycle at least 10 times.

Do yourself a favor and keep away from this machine. My recommendation is to keep away from Vista as well till it stabilizes and go with XP. It would take at least another year for Mr.Softie to get it right.

February 24, 2007: I spent quite a bit of time with hp support. Despite the various things hp support asked me to try (apply latest vista patches (did it), DVD drive patches (none available), graphics card patches (none available), install k-lite codec pack (did it)), the problem persisted.

February 27, 2007: Packed and returned the machine to amazon.
