Product Description

AMD Opteron processor gives companies a whole new way of doing business. The processor is based on AMD64 technology - an innovative technology that allows IT professionals to run 32- and 64-bit applications simultaneously. This means that organizations can grow into 64-bit computing without sacrificing their existing IT investments. With its Direct Connect Architecture, the AMD Opteron processor helps eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the CPU. Direct Connect Architecture delivers the best 2P and 4P architecture for x86 computing, resulting in the best performance-per-watt in the market. It's the ideal performance boost for the working environments of today and tomorrow.Dual-core AMD Opteron processor extends AMD's Direct Connect Architecture by connecting two CPUs on one die, improving overall system performance and efficiency.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Opteron 165 - One of Socket 939's GREAT bargains!.......2007-01-19

It may not look like much out of the box, with its 1.8GHz stock frequency, but once you mount the Skt 939 Opteron 165 in a capable motherboard and overclock it, it's easily capable of running at speeds faster than the best that Skt 939 has to offer, the FX-60 (2.6GHz).

Allied to an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe, the Opteron 165 is easily capable of hitting circa 2.6GHz at stock voltage and using the stock heatsink-fan cooling unit. Presently, I've got my Opteron 165 running at a super-stable 2.7GHz with just a small bump up in core voltage. Many various reports all over the internet testify to this dual-core processor's ability to go up to around 3.0GHz, but to do so you need to have a chip from one of the legendary CCBBE 0610DPMW steppings. My particular chip is from the CCBBE 0616XPMW stepping, which is also a very capable batch.

If I so chose to, and especially if I used water-cooling on this chip, I could extract even more performance. It's purely by choice that I'm not pushing it harder. But the potential and headroom for performance ARE there.

If you're into gaming, or into any kind of multi-threaded applications (video and other media encoding, for example), the Opteron 165 is a superb choice, especially if you overclock the processor. At a fraction of the price, you can keep up with all but the fastest AMD chips at their stock speeds. With skill, patience, and the right equipment, you can even outrun the best AMDs. Intel's best, on the other hand, are a little bit out of reach, but that's an apples to oranges kind of comparison anyway.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Another good CBBE 0616XPMW step 2.7 default vcore.......2007-01-10

I got mine in November and was lucky to get a CBBE that runs 2.7GHz on stock voltages and stock cooling. Great price/performance.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome but with a big caveat..........2006-11-11

This chip is bloody amazing at overclocking and its especially cheap now...
The problem is that it will soon be all gone and to hit a great overclock,
you need to get lucky with a good stepping number. But keep in mind, on stock speed, it is a little slow.

At 2.7+ghz, this chip is indeed wicked and is a great multi tasker. It even has 1mb L2 cache, so what's not to like? My only complaint about this chip is it has a very, very low heat ceiling. If you get the temps to 51-52+ C, it will BSOD and automatically reboot on you. So, needless to say, if you really want to push this chip, make sure you have liquid cooling or a phase unit.

For less than $200, this chip will smoke an x2 3800, and only lose to a high speed conroe when overclocked. Enjoy it while you can because within a couple months, they will all be gone for good!

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2006-06-23

This CPU so far has livied up to the hype. I have this chips currently with the asus a8n mother board running 310*9 = 2790 / HTTx3 running rock solid via 2x prim95's. The system is air cooled with my old heatsink XP-90 which never reaches over 40 degrees.

If you plan to over clock this CPU is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Opty 165 Socket 939.......2006-03-03

Great DualCore chip for any Socket 939 machine. Rated at 1.8Ghz can easily be clocked to 2Ghz or 2.1Ghz with stock cooler. Idles at 36C and loads at 42C. Easy to install using HSF counting clip and pre-applied termal paste. Runs on a Foxconn PCIe MicroATX board in an Antec Aria SFF case. Very pleased with this purchase.
