Customer Reviews:
Excellent machine and well worth the money!.......2007-06-07
I bought this Xbox HD-DVD add-on a few months ago but I wanted to make sure it was reliable before a review. I can say this is by far one of my best and favorite purchases. These are the TVs I have owned and used with this HD-DVD player:
- Toshiba 42" 1080p LCD
- LG 47" 1080p LCD
- Westinghouse 30" 1080i LCD
- Pioneer 42" 720p/1080i Plasma (Accepts a 1080p signal; Displays 1080i)
The HD-DVD add-on looked absolutely amazing on all of the TVs but by far the best two were the LG and the Pioneer. The HD-DVD player can put out a beautiful TRUE 1080p...such amazing detail when sitting close enough to observe it. This is why I returned my LG and bought (and kept) the Pioneer. I am a HUGE LCD fan but this Plasma took the cake with the EXCELLENT picture and detail it put out! I have found too minimal of a difference between 1080i and 1080p...even between a good 720p and a 1080p. For this reason I chose not to spend the extra cash for a 1080p TV.
I will end with saying this player is amazing! The detail is outstanding and the colors are so vibrant. I would definitely get a TV with a high contrast ratio and a low response time to really appreciate everything HD-DVD has to offer. The features on HD-DVD are also very cool and fun to work with.
One thing I did do for my pure enjoyment was purchase a stand alone Blu- Ray player to see how it matched up. For this little experiment I used the LG 47" 1080p LCD. With the newest Samsung blu ray player and the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on both putting out a complete 1080p signal via HDMI (Xbox elite), I did a pretty thorough comparison. What were my results? Apart form the Blu-Ray player freezing a couple times I have found that the picture quality is the exact same!!! The one difference I did notice which was minimal is that Blu-Ray was a little brighter (in general). This was consistant across the board with all HD-DVD vs Blu Ray movies I tried. I believe this to be due to the fact that the HD-DVD add-on is simply that...an add-on! BUT comparing an HD-DVD add-on to a stand alone Blu Ray player...WOW! This add-on is pretty amazing!
For the record...I am certainly a fan of Blu ray as well...for all of you people who will think this is a bias review.
Running this HD drive on a PC!.......2007-06-02
I bought one of these Xbox360 HD DVD drives when I heard you could run them off your PC with normal USB 2.0 connections and the rumors are right. It works great but there is one additional expense on top of the player. You need to invest in HD DVD playing software also! That typically runs about 99 dollars or so. I personally went with PowerDVD Ultra and really like it.
So all in all, a total of $297 invested in HD DVD gear and I have a 1080p playing HD DVD setup (PC is hooked to a Westinghouse LVM-37W3). The picture is just the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The playback is smooth and crisp.. no problems at all. You have to have a HDCP capable video card and monitor for all of this to work tho, so MAKE SURE you do if you want to try and run one of these off your PC. Also having a dual core cpu running at 3ghz or faster helps.. from what I hear.
Also, if yoy are running this off your Xbox360 and want 1080p, if you TV is 1080p capable and has a 15pin VGA input, use the 15pin VGA adapter to hook the 360 up. That will get the resolution up to a true 1920x1080 for 1080p happiness.
At any rate, this is a great drive for the price. I am very happy with mine!
Excellent !!! HD-DVDs Look Perfect!!! Blu-ray is way overpriced!!!.......2007-05-26
First of all, Blu-ray is all hype. HD-DVDs are Awesome. Standalone units are more affordable. If you own a Xbox 360, please get this HD-DVD player. Just make sure you have a HDTV. The 360 just have way too many games than PS3. The Xbox 360 is currently outselling PS3, 3 to 1. Because PS3 has no games, all the PS3 owners bought blu-ray movies instead. That is why blu-ray movies outsold HD-DVD movies in the 1st quarter of 2007. Don't believe this blu-ray crap. Do you know which company backed Betamax and not VHS ? You guessed it, "Sony". And now they are backing the overpriced and overhyped Blu-ray format. It is ok to own a 720p/1080i HDTV. 1080i looks just as good as 1080p. A lot of people will not be able to tell the difference anyway. One more info, HD-DVD also supports 1080p.
Excellent sub $200 HD DVD Player for 360 owners........2007-05-24
I purchased this item when it first came to market; however, I held off on my review until now so I could get a good feel for how this product performs. After watching most of what is currently available in HD-DVD to date I am nothing but impressed with this player. The downside is you need to already own an Xbox 360 for it to be of any use, but when I bought it the lowest priced standalone player was $500, a huge value in my opinion. The playback is smooth with no visible performance issues. I'd highly recommend this to anyone with a 360 looking to get into the Hi Def movie market.
Great, now I have to buy the White Album again..........2007-05-19
After a rather touchy set-up (the unit was very picky about its USB connections and what can use them. The extra USB ports on the unit itself came in quite handy ), it was up and running. Popped in the included copy of "King Kong" and sat back to watch the flick. It wasn't even over before I hit the Pause button and ran out to buy copies of "V For Vendetta," "Batman Begins," and "The Fountain." The image quality is astonishing and it is a nice option to get into High Definition at such a low price point. With few exceptions I'll have to buy HD versions of stuff I already have. Damn you, Microsoft, Damn you!
