Customer Reviews:
Cheap but Not Reliable.......2005-10-16
I bought a 120 GB last April. It broke last Dec. My data was gone when I returned it for replacement. Last week the replaced drive broke too. It was out of warranty and I had to pay for repariment.
Good drive, lousy software.......2005-08-12
If you need to migrate your existing Win XP drive to a new Maxtor drive, forget it if you're counting on the software included. You'll need to buy a copy of Norton Ghost.
It's much quieter than the WD Caviars I used to run. Not clear yet whether it's as fast... but the real cost to me was the disastrous MaxBlaster software, which WILL NOT perform a copy of your old drive if it has Win XP on it. As another reviewer says, it hangs 90% (about 4 hours for an 80GB transfer!) into the copy process. After trying again and again, I called Maxtor tech support, which admitted that you can't do an XP disk copy. They told me to buy separate software to migrate my old drive to the new one. No apology, nothing. Unlike the other reviewer, I spent the better part of 3 days trying to migrate the old drive (which worked fine - I just needed a bigger drive). Spent $70 on Norton Ghost, which did the job flawlessly after I got the settings right.
This seems to be a good drive, but it's totally misrepresented as a drive that supports XP. If the software can't migrate a good XP drive to this drive, then don't claim it can. I have no idea whether WD's (or anyone's) included software can do this - but I wasted a LOT of time and extra bucks making this drive work. Seems like a good drive. But I'd never trust Maxtor's claims again.
Failed after 4 days.......2005-06-26
This drive failed without warning after 4 days. I bought it on June 21st and it failed on June 24th. Windows tried to access the drive, which caused the machine to reboot. Upon reboot the BIOS did not recognize the drive and I could hear a 'click click' of the drive head. Save yourself the headache and don't get this product.
Big, Fast and Quiet.......2005-03-13
I have had this drive for about a year with no complaints. Here is the text from a review on the NewEgg website: "For those who are having problems with the noise of the Hard Drive. Please go to Maxtors web site and download the AMSET utility. It works. I purchased this Hard Drive and it was so loud I was ready to return it. I downloaded the software from maxtor to an A: diskette and ran it. You have options to choose if you want quiet, fast or the Acoustic management turned off.I chose quiet and the Hard Drive is extremely quiet and still runs at warp speed. Maxtor rocks!!!"
Best Massive Storage.......2005-02-05
Got the Maxtor L01P120 at BestBuy for $59.91 (including taxes and no rebates). Currently I am using it as an external storage device. Used the USB 2.0 to IDE adapter to connect it with my Laptop. Works great.
