Product Description

The pocket-sized Pockey DataStor 2.0 is the most exciting portable storage solution available today! This Pockey offers 60GB of massive storage capacity, the fastest transfer rates, and ultra-portability. Transferring large amounts of data is a snap with the USB 2.0 interface which offers transfer rates up to 480 Mbps - that's 40 times faster than USB 1.1 speed! Best of all, the ultra-portable Pockey does not require any additional power source (such as batteries or AC adapter) because all necessary power is drawn through the USB cable. You can take it anywhere! The Pockey is compatible with laptops and desktops, PC/Mac/Linux, so cross-platform file sharing is a breeze. Plug-N-Play, hot-swappable, and hot-pluggable features make the Pockey convenient and easy to use. With DOS level support, the Pockey is a powerful tool for even the most demanding IT manager.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Success using Linux.......2007-03-09

Out-of-the-box I plugged this into my Debian Linux workstation WITHOUT using a power supply. It was properly detected and auto-mounted. I formatted it with a journaling filesystem (ext3) and copied 36GB of data to it. No fuss. No muss.

This drive works great and I love it's small size. I have nothing negative to say about it and I highly recommend it - especially if you use linux.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, need external power supply.......2005-12-30

Despite the statements that this device can be powered from a USB, I found that it is erratic at best. I tried it on two different newer Dell laptops (D400 and 700m) and it ran better on the 700m, but still needed an external power supply on both to work closer to correctly. Without an external supply, I tried every combination of available USB ports, removed all other USB devices so this had all the power, removed the laptop from the docking station (docking stations are a known problem as they apparently split total power among the available USB ports), AND used an externally-powered USB device. The website and instructions indicate that an externally-powered USB will work but it did not.

Now, here is the warning. The hard drive, during ALL of my tests, APPEARED to work correctly. However, it would periodically stop and report I/O errors. On closer inspection, I found many many files with corrupted filenames...most of the names would be correct but a few letters would be changed. Real life example: my "Equipment" folder became "Nuqwipment" (control characters removed). Other filenames would be correct, but the files could not be opened because they were corrupted.

All of this because of power. And you have no way of knowing.

Unfortunately, there is not way to know that the drive is currently underpowered unless you happened to detect some bad file names. The drive itself appears to work correctly. It would certainly be nice for a little internal detection circuitry to detect insufficient power and turn the LED a different color or launch an error message or something.

Due to the complete uncertainty of data quality, I have to give this product a low rating. It may work great with an external power supply, but it is advertised pretty heavily as not needing one.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!.......2005-12-30

I had to write in, even though I've had this for over a year--inherited second hand from my husband, who used it for a couple of years before me.

I'm no techie. All I know is it works perfectly, quickly, quietly. I never even DREAMED I could have lost data on my external hard drive--till I looked up hard drives at Amazon. The horror stories--of lost files, poor customer service, etc--were eye-openers.

I'll admit, I bought a big-name hard drive yesterday. The $80 rebate got me! But I'm returning it and going for another Pockey HD. It's more money, but it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product .......2005-09-04

This the third Pocketec I have bought. I have been so impressed with the product that I have bought two as gifts for other techies. The design, capacity, durability, and service are all excellent.

5 out of 5 stars are you happy to see me?.......2004-08-31

Or do you just have a 60GB drive in your pocket? That's a buttload of storage for a pocket sized drive. Since it's USB, you can use it on Mac or Windows (although you'll need to format it accordingly). Fantastic for moving data from one PC to another without burning a stack of CDs. Plug-n-play-n-dump.
