4 out of 5 stars Very good performer. Low energy use. Questionable pricing structure........2007-03-15

This is very good performer. Celeron is practically a dirty name considering how terrible the original Celerons were. This shares the disreputable name, but in design it has nothing in common with those Celerons.

This is actually a Pentium 4 Cedar Mill 65nm Processor with less cache. Even with reduced cache it has a full 512MB, which is a much as the top of the line and far inferior Prescott 478 P4s possessed. Also, this is an entirely new manufacturing process. The 65nm design means that the processor runs faster and cooler than previous 90nm processors running at the same clock speed, and it overclocks incredibly well. There is an added benefit to the latest additions to the Celeron D line: while the CPUs up until the 356 used the new 65nm technology, they still used a good amount of Wattage: about 90 Watts at stock, and a lot more, (try 150!!!) if overclocked. The 360 and 365 max out at a mere 65 Watts. This is at full load, running the processor 100% all of the time. I don't know anyone who does that. Most of the time this CPU scales down and uses considerably less energy, so for those who are into being "Green" you can take solace in that if you need to run a system 24/7 you're doing the environment a small favor by buying this. You'll be happier with your electric bills too.

The one caveat is price. This seems like a great deal, and just 6 months ago it would have been, but things have changed quite a bit. Intel is now selling dual core 65nm processors like the 915 for about 30% more than this. It has a lower clock speed but 8 times the cache and twice the processing power. AMD has come out with low energy dual core 65nm CPUs that top out at 70 Watts and can be found for around $100.

This is definitely worth buying, but I think it should be a bit less money considering how competitive the market is.
