Customer Reviews:
worked as descried.......2007-05-07
The drive was sold at a good price and was very easy to install and worked as described. What more can I say, it's an internal hard drive for a desktop PC. The price was good and the drive worked and installed easily.
Mine is Fine.......2007-03-09
I got it with my Dell computer when I purchased in 2000, it did have to be replaced in 2002 but the new one has been running fine, I did have to get a new one to use it as a back up. Two draw backs are the size because the new software takes up so much space and also if you buy this one, the software cd is not included and you have to downloaded it from Western Digital. If your computer can handle bigger drives defintely go for it, if not this not a bad option especially for extra space.
Mine Crashed.......2006-12-09
Mine is less than two years old. Will not boot, unable to recover data, it just clicks. I was going to buy another one until I read the feedback on this product.
Look elsewhere........2006-07-10
The positives first - it's cheap for a 40-gig drive.
This drive kept me going for three years with intermittent weirdness. Once in a while it would simply 'disappear', i.e., the PC wouldn't find it. A power cycle usually fixed the problem. It was later mounted in an external casing, and exhibited the same erratic behaviour. The problem was that this misbehaviour was not repeatable. It would happen at random, once a month. WD servicing could not repeat this problem, and it was returned to me.
It's just a month after the warranty expired. Yesterday it was totally dead, without a warning. There were no signs of failure, no data corruptionor loss, no misbehaviour, nothing. The drive powers on and after 1-2 minutes, it can be seen in the XP device manager, but it's not seen in the disk management tools. Any attempt to resecue it using Knoppix or UBCD failed. I even tried mounting it in an external USB2 casing, but that too was a failure.
This is the second WD disk going belly up on me this year, and the last WD I'll buy. The Seagate and Hitachi's I've been using have been reliable so far.
Slow and unreliable.......2006-04-12
This drive came with my computer in 2001. It worked okay for several years, although it became slower with time. One day it just refused to boot. I was lucky to be able to connect it peripherally to my computer at work and recover my data. But it is worrisome to have your drive just fail suddenly. Admittedly, this happened after 5 years of service, so it might be within the expected life span of a hard drive.
